View Full Version : Attendance vs. Aberdeen

The ground looked and felt empty tonight. Watching on Sportscene seems to confirm the huge amount of empty seats, but attendance was 15,800 of something. Seems strange- do they count in all season tickets regardless if people turn up?

Yes they count all season tickets.

Better atmosphere tonight but numbers of bums on seats as low as I can remember for a Dons game for a long while. They were lucky if they had 2k and I doubt there wer 10k in teh ground. The atmosphere was supportive though and I think that probably helped teh players

Correct. Well done those that were there, even when we lost the goals the crowd got behind the team.

The ones that turned up got behind the team and they responded with a much better performance.

Got a table in the Edinburgh City club ( formerly the Loch Inn ) that hasn't happened all season .... lucky if the crowd was 10,000. But I've seen 15,000 at other games give the team less encouragement, so fair play to everyone who was there.

It is evident in our annual accounts that our attendances are nowhere near what is announced every home game.

We do the same as every club, tickets sold not actual attendance.
Hearts had about 4000 empty seats on Saturday but had the attendance as 19,000 odd.

How often do we experience this though; ground half empty but the atmosphere is just as good if not better?
Half the time i think the 6000 who dont turn up when we’re playing badly are the ones who moan and turn on the team or just sit on their hands throughout anyway.

Aberdeen had an excellent support it has to be said.
While we were down on numbers the atmosphere inside Easter Road was very lively. An entertaining game, goals, end to end and two teams playing open attacking football made for an enjoyable night.
Throw in the abysmal refereeing display and that was another contributary factor in the noise levels.
Those who didn’t make it missed a cracker.

I was at the 4-0 game at the end of last season and there were fewer in the stands then than last night. That game was a dead rubber however.

Kris Boyd was having a bit of a dig this morning on SSN - albeit his point was "Hibs fans aren't turning out, have they had enough of this team and David Gray?" kinda thing.
Didn't see him commenting on the Hearts turnout at the weekend.

Yeah, nowhere near the stated attendance, but the atmosphere was good and generally positive and I think that reflected in the performance as the work rate of the players was hard to fault.
Place went bonkers at our 3rd goal as well
Almost had the feel of a derby at times.
I was wondering how those who left when Aberdeen scored their 2nd felt 30 minutes later.... Disappointing to see that but I couldn't really blame them at the time as we've seen it so often recently but they missed one hell of a show :greengrin

I left at the 🐑 3rd goal, absolutely raging. Probably as angry as I've ever been at a Hibs game. I can only remember leaving early once before, a 0-4 loss to Dundee at ER the week we sold Mickey Wier to Luton. I was at the bottom of the stairs from the FF Upper and managed to run back in to see the celebrations and the end of the game. I was probably angry as i think we deserved at the very keast a point and id argue deserved a win against a team much hyoed and actually being spoken about as challenging the OF. Only to see us lose goals due to rank stupidity and play that youd see at an amateur level. Id say we matched them, if not bettered them all over the park and it is so frustrating to see where theyvare compared to us. Their no33 is howling as well and if he was playing for us he would be slaughtered. Delighted we got a draw and certainly less crabbit than I was at 2-3 down

Really embarrassing turn-out for the Aberdeen game. It looked terrible on the TV. The support turning its back on the club, in admittedly difficult times, is worrying. To me, this demonstrates a disconnect between the current owners/board etc and the fan base. Never a good thing!

The disconnect isn't with the owners - it's because we've won one game this season and are bottom of the league!
Outside this forum, noone cares who the owners are - casual fans don't want to spend £25 going to see a team that keeps getting beaten. They'd rather go for a walk, go shopping, go to the cinema, or watch tv.

Pretty much. We saw the opposite happening in the Away stand. They’ve been winning games so are attracting bigger crowds than they have seen in years.
As an aside do people really get embarrassed by the size of our crowd and how it looks on TV? It doesn’t even register on the list of things that would make me blush.

I disagree, i have real hatred of the Gordons, the father came in like a rottweiler and it was his way or the highway, in fact he sacked good people who loved Hibs and were doing very good work, replaced them with faceless nobody's with no connection or feelings for the club.
He then gets ill, and puts his son in charge of probably the most important part of a football club as a plaything for him.
Of course i have a dissconnection with the board, they are the reason we are floundering at the bottom of the league after a steady decline from the day they walked through the door.
They are the reason we sacked Jack Ross and every manager since, because they dont have a clue how to run a football club, thats clear after watching them change from one strategy to another.
We must be due another review, or at least the results from the last one?

What about the players that keep getting sent off, missing penalties, not marking their man, strikers who can't score a goal, goalies who can't catch a ball? etc. That's why we're bottom of the league. Not because of the owner. I disagreed about sacking Ross the week before a cup final (did that really happen???????????) but everything else is just football - every manager that's appointed and every player that's signed is a gamble - sometimes it works and usually it doesn't.

All these players you speak of were hired on the current owners' watch.
Some were potentially scouted by him.

I take it you didnt attend in the late 70s or the 80s with regular gates of 5000 to 6000, we are hitting around 10,000 more nowadays so all things considered I think we are doing well in the current climate. Football is not great but paying extortionate prices for the privilege of seeing your team week in and week out is financially challenging for a lot of people who should be applauded for attending.

I go H&A on a regular basis and have done for near on 50 years. The Aberdeen game on Tuesday was the first home game that I missed this season and four in total. It's been a real slog in recent weeks for me to get motivated to go games and that's a concern for me even though i've seen just as bad in seasons past. I'll make my mind up on Saturday morning depending on my crowd that's going if I decide to go to Motherwell.

Actual signing, I genuinely can't think of one. Have high hopes for Bowie though. Nicky Cadden has three goals in his last three games, that's pretty good.
Obita had a decent season last year?
But no standout clearly good signing for an age.

My selective memory tells me Boyler has been poor since he came back looks to have lost a yard and is regressing by the week but since he came back he has scored 21 goals from 70 appearances and that should have been more taking into account missed penalties which is no too shabby

Anyone who was up at Dundee would have heard the thoughts of the away end towards the board/ownership.
It’s incorrect to say it’s only people on the forum that care about them. I’d say the majority of the support hold the board and ownership responsible for the position we currently find ourselves in.

A good club owner does not play football manager with the club, they employ folk to run the football side of the club, competant people.
A good club owner does not put his son, a son who'd never been involved in football in his puff, as head of recruitment.
Have you seen this team/squad perform?
Where did we get these players from, who signed them, who reccomended them, were they good at their job?

The manager used to be in charge. Alex Miller used to drive the length of the country to watch players and persuade them to join Hibs - Goram, Jackson, McAllister, Wright, Evans, McGinlay, Leighton. That was part of his job. The new way of signing players hasn't come up with anyone half as good as any of them.
How do they do it now? Sign a random player with the best stats that the computer throws out? It doesn't seem to be working.
I can't imaging David Gray is driving down to Oldham tonight to try and find the next Andy Goram, unfortunately.

What club has a good owner? What does a good owner do?
Times have changed.
Neither Sir Tom Farmer or Rod Petrie would have claimed to be 'football people' but they owned/ran Hibs at a time when managers were more hands-on in the signing process. Prior to the Gordon takeover the trio of Craig, Dempster and Stubbs (all very much 'football people') ran a tight recruitment process and (I imagine) players were actually watched in action rather than selected by computer stats. There were very few duff signings, whereas the way things are down now (with what seems to be a vast recruitment team) we're lucky if we get one half decent player for every dozen signed.
Just noticed that somebody has mentioned Alex Miller and it's a good point. He may not have been everyone's favourite manager, but there's no question he brought a helluva lot of good players to Hibs over the years. He would have had Dougie Cromb's blessing to do so.
Bottom line, it's not true to say that signings 'usually don't work'. Back then the majority of them did.

RE: The comments about the 'attendance' announced at the game compared to the amount that actually turn up...
I think it was around 2015/16 that the club switched from announcing the actual number attending to number of tickets sold, which I believe most other clubs had been doing for years before that.
IMO, It does make it a bit of a farce calling it an 'attendance', considering the actual meaning of that word.
