SPFL statement: Bonnyrigg Rose | SPFL (https://spfl.co.uk/news/spfl-statement-bonnyrigg-rose-fc)
Decision of SPFL Disciplinary Tribunal...
Bonnyrigg Rose FC has today received a six-point deduction following an SPFL Disciplinary Tribunal into SPFL Rule breaches, which were admitted by the club.
In September 2024, the Scottish FA downgraded Bonnyrigg Rose FC’s overall Club Licence award from Bronze level to Entry level, due to the gradient of the pitch at the club’s New Dundas Park.
It is an SPFL Rule that all clubs must have a Bronze level Scottish FA Club Licence and Bonnyrigg Rose FC were therefore charged with a breach of SPFL Rules.

Will cost them £120k to correct the pitch apparently. Unsure why it’s now an issue when they’ve been in the league for 2 or 3 seasons.

Probably much easier and more cost effective in long term (as well as revenue generating) to build a plastic pitch

Been a fundraiser set up with the aim of raising the money but sitting at less than 3k after a couple of weeks.
Bonnyrigg are well supported for a club at that level but they’ll be going very well to have the money in the time required.

Maybe the SPFL could fine the 2 arse cheeks for sectarianism/fans misbehaving and use the money to help clubs like this? Just a thought

I’m a season ticket holder for Whitehill Welfare but it’s also great to see BR doing well in recent times. I hope the raise the funding they require. They are well supported and have a good community organisation around the club with the Poltonhall all weather pitches etc. Furthermore, the pies are brilliant.

Bloody ridiculous. Beaks ****ing things up for a well run small team whilst turning a blind eye to the constant sectarian shenanigans going on through in the West. Honestly, a slope in the 4th tier of Scottish football? How is that even a problem?

I hope they manage to raise the cash. Such a huge Community Club and they have had an amazing journey. The slope is pretty bad I'd still take it over astro all day long

Fining them for a sloped pitch in the 4th tier of Scottish football yet we’ve had Livi and Killie shockers of pitches in the top flight for years.

What about Fir Park? Quite a prominent slope across the pitch in front of Davie Cooper Stand. I’m convinced the hight of the crossbar is higher at one side of that goal than the other.

How do Dumbarton manage to get away with that hollow down near the bottom left corner flag? I remember Lewis almost having to climb out of it after a run down the left wing!

Good spot
I’m presuming the SPFL rules are on what kind of slope it is😀
From our stand behind the goals there was a big slope right to left

Don’t meddle with the SPFL.
I’m sure they’ll be about to bring about their wrath onto a team from the west that didn’t even have their ground ready for the opening games of the season ………………..our maybe not.
Embarrassing for our authorities that they ignore the misdemeanours of the ass cheeks while EUEFA routinely punish them for the same sins.

Whilst I think 6 points is harsh I suppose if no action was taken other clubs who have spent significant sums of money on upgrading pitches, floodlights, changing facilities, spectator areas, medical rooms etc etc to enter and advance through the pyramid set up would be entitled to ask why they bothered if there was no punishment for not meeting the published criteria.

Bonnyrigg - Slight slope. 6 point deduction
Rangers - No pitch. Here you go you can use Hampden lads.

Most pitches will have a slope to some degree for drainage. Not saying it would be as pronounced as Bonnyrigg, mind.

Was just going to post this. Instantly noticeable when you’re in the away end looking at the stand opposite and you can see it on the tele too

If you stand at the half way line where the dugouts are at Ibronx, you can't see the touchline at the other side as the pitch basically has a camber around from the centre spot (for drainage I was told). How's that allowed?

Would rather have a slope on a grass pitch than a flat plastic pitch. Have noticed down south dangerous run offs surrounding a few EPL pitches, Old Trafford being one.

East Kilbride seemingly got a £400 k grant as well really harsh on Bongo
Both teams have to play a half shooting up the slope, so what’s the problem?
I know there’s a similar (bad) argument about artificial pitches, but it’s not the same, as plastic pitches bounce differently, and the home team get to know the quirks and foibles like dead spots and such like. A home team with a slope don’t really gain an advantage that I can think of

Pretty sure Motherwell levelled their pitch at the start of last season.
But aye, I mind Sauzee scoring a free kick there once and my Grandad called it before he hit it due to the difference in the height of the crossbar from each other. Le God smacked it top corner.

It's not just stadium. It's things like how qualified staff are - e.g is your physio got all his qualifications or does he just own a sponge

oh we certainly did over the years, even i remember the days when we didn't worry about going in at HT a goal or two down, a good chance we would reverse it in the 2nd half :) the opposition legs would tire

True, but the opposition will win the toss as often as not and can choose to shoot down the slope in the second half if they want

Bonnyrigg’s slope is not like the old one at ER.
It kind of slopes diagonally into the corner and I found it very disorienting standing right at pitch level, the first time I went there for the Rose v Cowdenbeath play off.
I do have a bit of sympathy for them though, seems harsh, sounds though like the authorities got fed up with a lack of plan and timeline to rectify it as much as anything.

They only changed the rules around needing a bronze at the start of this season, it was the reason why Buckie weren’t allowed to play in the playoffs last season to get promoted. Just seems like everyone is desperate to keep the leagues a closed shop.

No matter how bad the slope appears I can assure you it is a hundred times worse to play on.
Huge advantage to Bonnyrigg.
Torn though over punishment.
On the one hand it seems unfair to penalise clubs over something that was known all along.
On the other shouldn’t we be trying to raise standards.
Problem is that standard raising is always done selectively and never to favour clubs trying to break through glass ceilings, more to protect the status quo.

As long as the teams change ends at half time there is little advantage and certainly not huge. It’s mental rather than physical. Just win the toss.
