View Full Version : Ivan Sproule’s hat-trick
Donegal Hibby

We had a local guy working at our house today who had his son with him and the father knowing I was a Hibby asked jokingly did I remember Ivan Sproule which I replied ‘ some player was our Ivan ‘ …
The father said his son was playing for the club he was manager of ‘ Dergview fc ‘ in castlederg ..
I then had a interesting conversation with the son about Ivan who told me that Ivan had went to Southampton with his son who had a trial there , apparently Ivan’s son scored a hat-trick in the game …
Like father like son which got me looking back on Ivan’s today .. probably the best 5 grand Hibs spent in my time and a unbelievable hat-trick…

Scott Brown was superb that day too.
Sproule scored again in the 3-0 Scottish Cup win at Ibrox later that season but I think my favourite performance was when he ran Hearts ragged in the League Cup tie under Collins. 1-0 Hibs going on five or six. We had some insane level of possession, sure it was over 80%.

Ivan Sproule what an absolute maverick
Signed as a raw player you could ever wish to find but the genuine speed of the guy was something I don’t think anyone had ever seen in modern times.
His rise was incredible - from starting as a project, then to super sub, finally to first name on the team sheet, we all dreamt of a team of Ivan Sproules
Easily in my top ten favourite Hibs players
Mowbrays years I think were my glory years, even above McLeish who I saw, mowbrays team was young, different, fast, unpredictable.
Great times

Was that the game where Rob Jones scored with a header?

Not a header. Left foot effort from 6 yards out after a corner

Trust me, he got slagged on here all the time. Couldn’t cross, wasted lots of great chances, Hibs net knew best. I loved his journey from electrical repair to hattrick at ibrox.

Jones chested it down and smashed it in.
Glorious

One of my all-time favourite Hibs players.
Used to be a ripple of excitement when he was coming off the bench and every time he was on the ball. A great guy as well who properly loved Hibs.

I remember speaking to his sister one night in Eros & Elite. I can’t actually remember what we spoke about though. To be fair it probably wasn’t even his sister.

I am intrigued as to what Eros and Elite are (im thinking Gladiators contestants), and why his sister is in them.

Christ...the Tony Mowbary thread and now Ivan. Shows how desperate we are for some enjoyment of supporting Hibs that these topics make me smile.
Scott Brown that day was incredible - running with the ball out-pacing Peter Lovenkrands. Not long after that, we BATTERED Celtic at Parkhead, Brown again unreal and a confidence in Sproule that was inspiring.
Great great days for an 18 year old supporting the cabbage. (I like the description that it was our Tornados!)

It was a nightclub in Fountainbridge. An absolutely diabolical place that played cheesy rave music.

I think Sproule said when he was coming on that O’Conner wasn’t happy about being substituted and said something along the lines of “ what’s he going to do ? “ 😆

The 3-0 cup win is one of my favourite games. Huge Hibs support (cup, so we got 10% of Ibrox I think) for that game.

They are the best type of footballers, the ones who come in to the game "late" . Can never question their effort with the likes of Sproule, Jones, daz and yogi

One of my top 3 favourite Hibs players of all time. The complete package, he just got it. I can’t think of anyone other than McGinn who’s generated such excitement when they received a ball since him, you couldn’t wait to see how far he’d get every single time. The “Run wae it Ivan” shouts will stay with me forever watching Hibs.

Mind-blowing game, one of the best cup trips to Ibrox ever. Huge Hibs crowd singing "we are the people" sending the Huns apoplectic. Funny and hugely enjoyable seeing the Hun Hoards trying to get their heads around that.
Watching the Sproule hat-trick and 0-3 cup games reminds me of how it used to FEEL being a Hibs fan. By comparison, what we have to suffer now under the Gordon's is utterly mind-numbing.

Fantastic performance from Ivan Sproule who was homesick and on the verge of returning to N Ireland
My memories are of a brilliant young energetic box to box midfielder Scott Brown who also repeated the trick at Parkhead and Garry O’Connor saying to Mogga ‘ What the f#ck is he going tae dae ? ‘ on being hooked :greengrin

Roy of the Rovers stuff, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I would think someone made the story up.

Didn't he get called up for Northern Ireland shortly after that and came off the bench in a 1-0 win over England at Windsor Park?
Which is your favourite hat trick against the hun, Sproule against old rangers or Boyle against the new club?
I'm going Sproule only because it was Ibrox, Boyle treble at Hampden was barrie too!
And, which of Sproule and Boyle scored their three goals in the quickest time in either game?

Rangers were terrified of us that season. We beat them at Easter Road too, sandwiched between the two 3-0s at Ibrox.
This was just months after hammering celtic 3-1 at Parkhead too.
Great days, lovely side to watch.
That team was everything I want from Hibs. We're not winning the league, just give me that kind of entertainment. And the occasional trophy. That'll do me.

I remember not long after he signed her came off the bench at Hampden. I think it ended up a 2 1 defeat to Dundee United. Anyway, at that point he was so new and so raw it was noticeable his teammates didn't want to give him the ball.
He won everyone over in the end though!

Remember that well, our group were in the north stand down the bottom and he was playing right wing, in acres of space, but it was pretty evident players were choosing not to pass to him. Had the last laugh!

Both special though I thought without taking anything away from Boylers that Sproule’s 3 were probably all harder earned if that’s fair ..
Interesting that BH says Sproule’s 23 minutes, Boyles 29 .. checked up and big Mixu’s was 31 in the derby . What a night that was :greengrin

Cause Josh O'Connor said to the manager "what the f*** is he going to do"

20% is the rule for Scottish cup ties. Can remember knocking them out in a mid week Semi final 2nd leg in the 80's which we lost 1-0 but had won 2-0 at ER in the first leg .
Both very memorable. We have a great record against that lot in the cups.
