View Full Version : Hibs cult 11

At the game the other day we tried to lighten things up by coming up with a "cult" first team. These were players that the fans took to but were not necessarily what you would call an all time great.(SJM being an exception)

Can't remember who we finished with but it included Conrad Logan in goals, Budgie being his main competitor.
Other team members included Benny Brazil,
Mattie Jack, Dirk Lehman, SJM, Joe Tortalano, Erick Schaedler and Mixu.

Anyone missing and is someone able to make up a team?

He's here!

Sproule and Jimmy Boco were definitely mentioned. Big Bad John Macnamee who was before my time was suggested. Any thoughts?

Why is Shades in there? He is widely acknowledged as one of our best ever left backs. The only one that comes close in my 55 years of going to watch Hibs is David Murphy.

Funnily enough I met him a year ago or so at a do. Very unassuming, he was shocked I recognised him. Clearly doesn't realise the esteem he's held in with fans of my era.

He was never a favourite of Alex Miller, that and injury held him back at Hibs. Then came the emergence of Willie Miller. Both were hard as **** on the field.

Yes, both cracking 100% players. Geebsie was another who came through the ranks during those years.

I put him in because of his tackles, long throw which as a wee primary school boy made him a hero to me and my pals at our long throw competitions.

I also had SJM in the team as a cult hero. He would also be in my best ever Hibs players team but that can be a thread for a later international break.

Jay Shields had an utterly bizarre Hibs career.

A very small number of very good performances containing some true highlights, no black marks whatsoever then disappeared?

What was all that about?

Totally deserves a mention here btw.

Fantastic memories of ‘Stevie’ all sideburns and shirt tucked inside his shorts hugging the downhill Stand side touch line teasing his full back twisting turning dummying nutmegging before suddenly darting inside dribbling his way into the box inviting desperate tackles from behind or to the side from sleeping defenders too late to spot the danger and send him crashing to the deck usually when we most needed a goal

Jock Wallace once told him ‘ You should be playing tonight ‘ on their way through to Hampden to watch Scotland

My favourite player in that team, and that’s saying a lot considering some of the guys we had that year. Went about his work quietly, dependable and composed. Shame that injuries took their toll on his career because he was a very good servant to Hibs imo.
