I know that there are numerous threads on here discussing referees at our games but I thought I would start one just to discuss the standard of refereeing in Scotland, with specific examples if available.

I've just watched the highlights of the Motherwell v Celtic game and Motherwell had a freekick outside the penalty area. The Motherwell player took the freekick which came back of the crossbar straight to him without another player touching the ball. He then mis controlled the ball but the referee allowed the game to continue. That's an easy one to pick up on when you are within yards of the player involved.

Yes strange that wasn't noticed. Didn't see it assume thought goalie got a touch or nick off the wall.

In terms of the derby thought Robertson was slow to book Hearts players. Devlin should have been booked first half as should Boateng. Bizarrely allowed Rowles to bring ball onto the pitch delaying the game without booking. Weak as a kitten imo

Robertson was slow like that. 2 Hibs players booked for their first and innocuous fouls, devlin got away with a few before being booked, and others too. You could see hoilett in his ear after a series of fouls that he refused to book them for

Think it was only after Boyle spoke to him that he actually decided to book Penrice for the tackle on Miller too.

Although I rarely watch Sportscene for obvious reasons, I did watch the highlights of Motherwell v Celtic. There may have been two incidents where the woodwork was hit (by Lennon Miller), but certainly in one case the commentator suggested that a free kick was given because Miller touched the ball before another player did following his free kick. I imagine that Assistant Refs or 4th Officials (or possibly dreaded VAR) point this out.

4th Officials should only get involved in Serious Foul Play or Violent Conduct if it has been missed by the other officials. Their main concern is the technical areas and substitutions. VAR would not get involved so it is up to the referee and the two assistants to pick this up. It's unlikely that an assistant would flag for this as one would likely be on the half way line and the other would be on the opposite side of the pitch from the offence. This just leaves the referee and he was only a few yards away.

Robertson managed to pick up on Bursik throwing the ball out from a goal kick. Nobody else seemed to notice it at the time so I was quite impressed by that despite his otherwise terrible display.

Your key word is “should “. The other officials & VAR are becoming far more involved than they should. There was a recording recently even of a ref giving advice to players when ball was in play. Also the 4th Official is “in the ear “ of the ref more than I think they should.

I was listening to the commentary on the bus home. The ref did blow as it wasn't immediately clear to those commentating why he'd done so.Of course he may have been told himself since they are wired for comms.

The "rule" that gets me is that it seems to be ok to have two hands on an opponents shoulder to hold them but god forbid if you pull a jersey in the box. The special Hearts one is that Shankland always finishes a tussle by pushing his opponent. Came to excellent use last time at ER when he shoved Rocky to make space to shoot.

I noticed it. It can't be an offence though as the ball isn't in play. He actually sorted that out fine but he was horrific in terms of bookings. We clearly play to a different set of rules than the other teams when it comes to cards.
