View Full Version : Points lost in the last 15 minutes

Unsurprisingly we are the worst team in the league for goals in the last 15 minutes. So far this season, 9 games, we've lost 8 goals and scored 0.
Anyone know how many points we've dropped due to those goals?

Hearts had 75.7% possession in the final 15 minutes.
Hibernian have conceded eight goals in the last 15 minutes of the second half, more than any other team in the Premiership this season.
Pretty damming stuff.

If you choose to defend on your own penalty spot every time you go a goal ahead then you are going to lose a lot of late goals.
It's *****bag football. Be brave and push the line 10 yards up the park and we'll do a lot better. Manager could really do with trying it.

Agreed. Takes off our goal threats and hopes to see it out again. When will DG learn. Triantis off Welsh on.Probably take off Youan for Myko and keep Gayle Boyle and Hoillet on and go and try and secure a win Defensive minded subs again costing us.As much as Bursik could relegate us on his own Gray is not helping his chances of keeping the job.

Mentality - dodgy players / recruitment and dodgy subs that disrupt the game and have no idea who they are marking = losing late goals.
It’s not a co-incidence and I’m sure when we went down it was a common trait too.

8 goals conceded none scored in last 15 mins. 12th in the league for it.
Not unlucky. Not coincidence.
Equates to 1 and a half games worth of time. SPL select 8 - Hibs 0.
That is the result of absolute terrible rookie management.
Defensive subs, invite pressure, inevitable result.

It’s poor game management which comes from Gray. We should be looking to slow the game down and pass the ball around to keep as much possession as possible at these stages. You don’t want the opposition to have the ball and limit it as much as you can. Not dropping 10 yards back and shelling the ball whenever we get it.

The manager should be instilling belief and a never say die attitude in the players. We should have won today and at Tannadice, shoe on the other foot and no way this hibs team get anything from those two games.

There was a time not very long ago (was it under Lennon or Ross possibly?) where it was the polar opposite. We were constantly scoring late goals and it resulted in viable confidence throughout the whole game. A goal down? No problem, plenty of time left to win this. Now we go 2 goals down (arguably 1) and you know the game is done and you can that the players feel the same way.

We were saying this last week and this too. Fed up of gray making defensive subs that just invite the pressure. We should never have nmw, jdh triantis and Kwon on the pitch at the same time.
Why not bring rudi on if nmw is going to end up playing wide? I've been a supporter of gray but this one's on him as much as the team.

It's like SDG did a cheap course in football management, runs the playbook, and cannot understand why we continually fall apart and lose/draw games from winning positions. it's clear for all to see our defence simply cannot defend when the pressure is ramped up, but hey ho, SDG for some unfathomable reason continues to think they can and that somehow it will be different this time. Other managers and opposing teams must talk about this before every Hibs game and SDG obliges every time, playing into their hands.
Hibs strength is from middle to front. Clever, experienced players with pace to spare. Against County, SDG just has to go for it for the full 99 mins and see what happens. There's no rule that says, the team that it behind is entitled to attack for the last 10 mins and the other has to sit back and try keep them out - but that's how it looks with SDG and Hibs. Hibs are left playing our weakest cards (defence & keeper) at the end of the game. What could possibly go wrong ?

I agree with this, what I would say though, I’d that we have exactly no players in the team who are brave enough and competent enough to keep the ball and take us up the pitch to play in the opponent’s half in the closing stages.
We literally have guys who just boot the ball the way they’re facing or shell it up to nobody.
Not one player will take the ball for a run or look to play us out of trouble.
We clear it and then have to defend the ball coming back at us, the manager has a role in that but I’m looking at the team and don’t know who we’ve got that will do that side of it.
Probably doesn’t help that our main two midfielders are both predominantly defensive-minded (in fact, one is a defender being converted to a 6). We need brave players who are prepared to get on the ball and keep possession. Nobody in the team does that well, and especially so in the closing stages.

Hoilett would do that all day but he’s been the one sacrificed the last two weeks. Triantis for me would be willing to get on the ball and not just smash it away. Boyle is still capable of running us up the park.
I don’t entirely disagree with what you are saying, but when it’s getting to that point in games we aren’t using the players we do have that have a bit of composure to our advantage. We’re just asking them to play within 30 yards of our own goal, defend and not bother about getting up the park. To get done with it once happens. When it’s multiple times, it’s just ***** and it’s bad management for me.

We’ve conceded fewer goals than any side in the bottom 6, but when we’re also the lowest scoring team in the league and so many of the goals we’re conceding are coming at the end of games, it’s no wonder we’re bottom.
This issue has been amplified at the start of this campaign for sure, but feels like this has been a Hibs problem for a couple of years now.

Funnily enough, this was what sunk Jack Ross at Sunderland.
For where they were at that time they drew far too many games, especially ones from winning positions.
You'd probably think Jack Ross would be one of the managers to have influenced Gray the most, as he'll have been the manager to have enjoyed the greatest success whilst Gray's been on the coaching team.
I'm a bit torn on this one. It was encouraging to see how Hoilett got in in the role he played, he was head and shoulders above who has played there so far this season but we really missed him when he went off - and there wasn't really a natural replacement. Campbell and Rudi haven't been making a great impact on games lately so Gray may have been forgiven for wanting to try something different.
The results as we've fallen back defensively in recent weeks are indefensible, but I do think it's hard when teams make attacking subs and act to force us back - there are 2 teams playing each game, it's not just about us. And also - we defend one throw-in better, where we lost 3 headers in a row and we win that game. To me it feels - again - like coming up short in a moment rather than 20 - 30 minutes, still with a squad with options that for one reason or another looks short of the ability to do what was required. That really wasn't a great Hearts team either.

3 points v Dundee United (93rd & 99th)
1 point v Motherwell (79th)
2 points v Kilmarnock (92nd)

9 points lost if games had stopped on 86th minute, 10 points including the Motherwell game.

When we score goals..
Earliest goal 43 mins - hardly any early in games.
We rarely keep a lead for over 20 mins except St J game which we won.
Next time we are in the lead we need experience / players who can run with ball and keep it and those who can keep it under pressure on the pitch. Bringing in youth / rusty players or players who go haven’t played for 15 months and aren’t sharp isn’t the way forward.

It was an issue last season as well although not quite as consistently as this I don’t think. Remember losing injury time goals at St Mirren and Ross County in games we should have won. Hearts as well at ER obviously.
It all comes back to mentality and that mentality is what is driving Gray’s negative decisions IMO. He above everyone should see the benefit of going for it right to the end and not sitting back through choice.

The problem is DG. He doesn't have a way of playing that dominates the ball from middle to front, never mind playing it from back to middle.
No one around us on Sunday could understand what plan he had, it was like 11 players were playing off the cuff.
35% possession at home against a humpty hertz team is a sacking offence alone. Half of that possession time was in or around our defensive third. No period of comfortable possession in hertz half.
Really poor.

Like everyone else, I hope SDG comes good. But I do see some worrying aspects about the coaching (no composure or confidence on the ball, very evident with finishing and also basic errors when rushing passes/decisions in possession), and management of the game in latter stages (substitution choices, inability to boss it).

I agree with the general point that there is a lack of a plan or way of playing. It’s just percentage football and hoping that someone comes up with a moment.
I wasn’t concerned by the possession on Sunday though, I thought we were just content for them to pass it between themselves at the back (it was reminiscent of us much of the time over the last however long I thought).
We just never start a game with any intent though. It’s not good enough.

I dont get it with our tactics, yesterday was the first time we couldnt try and pass the ball out from the back this season, and it was down to a couple of things.
They did a high press on our defenders, and bar Obita none of the others really want the ball at their feet to play.
I think the way the gimps pressed us will have shown the rest of the league how to get us lumping the ball forward at every junction.

Totally agree.
There’s been a lot of focus on why we keep conceding late goals but there should be more focus on why we never score late goals. If we’re defending leads as we have been at times, surely that’s the perfect time to be hitting teams on the counter attack, even with 10 men!

Really poor ? But we were the team who missed all the chances. Had they been scored as they should have been-3 of them were sitters-we would probably be reading about Gray the master tactician.Truth is it was two poor teams-one of them had plenty of the ball and did nothing with it.
