View Full Version : Players clapping fans?

What are folks thoughts here? I think there is far too much made of this phenomenon.
Firstly, I do not need thanked for travelling to away games. It is a personal choice and one that i mostly enjoy, even if the result is rubbish as it supports time with friends and family. I pay and am happy to.
Players yesterday should be up the tunnel because it leaves them open for abuse, see Youann. I am not defending this but we all know there are tubes who will say stuff in the heat of the moment.
The players knew yesterday that they would get it if they came over but made some gesture to clap. Youann the Smith came over because presumably they felt safe give that they had not played, just odd.
I think it is fine for them to celebrate with fans but applauding is tokenistic imo.

Boyle was having an argument with someone in the Fair Play stand at full time. No idea what was said or whatever but there was a fair bit of pointing from Boyle and he wasn’t best pleased. Neither were any of us at that point. Nothing to be gained by any of it in those circumstances but, equally, if they just disappeared up the tunnel they’d be criticised for that.

I'd want to be avoiding as much awkwardness at possible at full time regardless of the result, certainly don't need force-fed synthetic player appreciation.
I'd think as professionals they would all be distraught at what happened - I don't feel that put out they don't happen to automatically think they need to throw a half-arsed handclap in the way of folk abusing them. Similarly, if it needs a manager to round them up like a folk of sheep, it's hardly the most sincere of gestures.

My own personal gripe has always been clapping the team off when they’ve lost, especially when they’ve been proper gubbed or shat the bed like yesterday.
I find it more infuriating players coming over clapping, as half arsed as the effort when it’s a bad bad loss. St Mirren first game for example.

It’s a tricky one after capitulations like yesterday.
It’s for our benefit and an appreciation of our support, and in victory it can be a mutual appreciation, or when good performances may not yield results that were perhaps deserved. Yesterday was definitely a one way affair.
It’s hard to just bite your tongue and watch the players and management come up to applaud the fans without venting your ire towards them in frustration.
After the injury time equaliser there was a lot of frustration and anger, and the booing had started long before the winner. Had we ended up drawing the team were going to be roundly booed off the pitch at end.
I actually thought the winner diluted that anger from what it was going to be, with the goal being met with a sort of predictability and most just trudged out without hanging around.

can’t win. Fans are fickle and so the circle turns.

Spot on, for every player should be straight up the tunnel there's a someone else.saying players don't give a **** about the fans.
OP has me shaking my head, just leave the ground then, nothing to see here.
Players need to read the crowd. I wasn't at the game yesterday but players shouldn't have been going past the 1/2 way.line and definitely not getting into conversations with fans, it only.goes one way.

Why do they have to clap the fans then?
I don’t care of the fans clap me or not, they’re not my pals and I will continue to support them/the club regardless of their clapping.
Again, sorry if I’ve forced head shaking or displeasure.

Dammed if they do dammed if they don't
I personally don't mind it.
If fans don't want to see it - they can just leave the ground. No (or very few) fans left tells it own story.
I'd assume that players are just as disappointed as fans when results don't go our way.
I was at the Elfsborg v GAIS game in August. Result was 2 - 1 to Elfsborg.
The atmosphere was great. Lots of singing from most fans in the stadium.
Both sets of fans stayed to the death and both teams took plaudits from their respective fans - so different from Scotland and so nice to see.
I shared my story/experience with a friend (Aberdeen supporter) who told me Aberdeen fans were taking the pi$$ out of Thelin when he came to Scotland because he's now got everyone at Aberdeen out on the pitch taking plaudits from the fans.
Thelin was surprised when he was asked about it in an interview and said it was just the usual in Sweden.

It's a bit like booing at HT and FT. It's something that has happened at football for as long as I can remember. It's all pretty meaningless really; players will know after a day like yesterday what they are going to hear. Part and parcel of the game for them.
Personally if I don't think the players performance merits acclaim then I just up and leave; if the team has played well or battled away against the odds then I'll acknowledge that even in defeat (and I'm aware the players won't give a toss either way).

I'm similar. I reciprocate what I have seen on the pitch. If we play ok and knock our pans in then I can appreciate that. If the heads go down and players start disappearing then I usually just head straight away. a decade or so ago I may have given them a boo our vented but it seems pointless and was only making me feel worse. I think you get to an age and realise we are always going to be rubbish and the Cup Wins and the odd derby win are basically it in terms of highlights. I doubt I will ever not have a season ticket assuming I am healthy enough to attend but I now don't feel guilty when I miss games. It was up at ICT yesterday and it was half time before I even thought about the Hibs score. I made the mistake of checking the score when the Inverness game finished and thought we had won. Five minutes later in the car it was all very different
