I’ve gone down the rabbit hole since watching Threads the other night. Way before my time, but does anyone remember the Protect and Survive booklet? Anyone still got it? The PIFs as shown on the film? This is my new obsession, I’m absolutely fascinated by the morbidity of it all.

I had never even heard of Threads until a couple of days ago. Saw the headlines about it being shown and watched it last night. It's brilliant in a totally bleak and depressing way. There aren't many films that really unsettle me but that ticked the box.

I grew up a stones throw from both Redford and Dreghorn Barracks and can still remember them testing the sirens in the surrounding areas in the early 90s (I also found the bikini state sign at the entrance to each site hilarious).

There is quite a big survivalist movement active on social media, primarily US based but there are pockets in Europe. I'm a fan of pickling, preserving, canning etc and there are people in these groups who are gold mines of information. Most of the people in these groups seem far from horrified about the thought of nuclear war or some other cause of societal breakdown; on the contrary most seem almost excited by the idea. It's about perverse really.

I’ve seen documentaries about these doomsday prepper folk before, I do get the impression they actively want it to happen too. Personally, if the bomb ever drops I’m heading for Edinburgh/Glasgow, as both would be a target. I don’t want to survive a nuclear war, not after seeing that bloody film!

It is a bit perverse the way some people seem to be excited by the idea (and I’m only a newbie to this particular part of social media, so I can imagine there’s worse that I haven’t seen), but I do find the entire topic fascinating.

Thanks for sharing that PB, I didn’t even consider that Dreghorn and Redford would’ve been considered a possible target an attack, but it makes sense. Let’s hope it never happens.

So as part of this newfound fascination (perhaps hyper fixation would be appropriate) I’m dragging the wife to NI’s regional war room in Belfast next week. Not even sure you can get in to see it but we’ll be there anyway. I think I might be losing my mind.

I watched the re-run on CH4 and it was the first time I had seen it since the original screening. I could remember almost all of it. Outstanding TV.

It’s the woman holding the dead baby immediately after Ruth leaves the shelter, the melting milk bottles and the Kemp’s next door neighbours screaming (presumably turned back after getting told they can’t get through by the police and didn’t have time to set up a “shelter”) that really got me. Horrific but absolutely incredible.

I watched it when it was first shown. Horrendous viewing and it's no surprise its taken this long for it to be shown again.

Still to watch it, having missed it in the 80s . There's a room in the Secret Bunker(north east Fife.) given over to the programme and the advice that was given out. Very grim material and long with completely useless advice. Intended only to keep the populous thinking they'd survive

It’s very good, but it takes a few days after watching it to be able to appreciate how good a film it actually is. Need to let the paranoia subside a bit before you realise how well made it is. You’re right re the advice in the booklet and PIFs, my personal favourite is paint your windows white to reflect the heat from the blast and close the blinds! Absurd but it likely gave people a bit of comfort.

Will be visiting tomorrow, looking forward to it. Also saw that Barnton Bunker is now open to the public with tours every Saturday, still in the process of being tarted up though. Going to hold off on that until it’s finished but sounds like a good day out.
