My mate used to work for him back in the 90s and obviously knew him well. He bumped into him at the Euros and said he didn't look a well man at all.

Almost got us there, I'm minded to forget all the other stuff and remember the huge contribution he made.

Up there as the most outstanding politician in Scotland, didn't agree with his politics but he was miles ahead of the idiots we have had across all parties the last 10 years or so.

Quite a shock. A colossus of Scottish politics in his heyday.

Thought he was a brilliant communicator and was a fantastic proponent of Scottish independence. Clearly not infallible

Tony Blair used to whine that he never really compared the Scottish Parliament to an “English Parish Council”, it was only the nasty Scottish press who twisted his remarks! In fact, he did so compare

Similarly, there is little point in John Swinney complaining that his attendance at the grandly titled Council of the Nations and Regions doesn’t carry a perception of a regional status for the nation of Scotland - it does deliver that status

Of course the First Minister has the right to insist on bilateral JMC meetings with the Prime Minister. I am not sure in which world that correct business approach includes a convivial group selfie with the political opponent who is freezing Scots pensioners

If John or his advisers had read Gordon Brown’s original proposal for this Council, then they would have realised that this wasn’t some ad hoc reset meeting, but part of a plan to pull any independence teeth from devolution

It is designed to diminish the status of our Parliament and the First Minister. Part of becoming independent is about thinking independently, not subserviently. John should have politely declined the meeting with the words “Scotland is a country not a county”.

Not much love for the man, but hard not to respect his role in Scottish politics. Certainly quite shocking when the news broke earlier.

The most inspiring Scottish politician of my lifetime by far.

Knew his material inside out and back to front.

I wonder if we will ever see such an accomplished pro indie politician again?!

Took us so close to the brink of getting our own country back.

For all that work to be destroyed by sturgeon and her chronies.

RIP.

Less than 12 hours after his death, here's BBC Scotland political editor Glenn Campbell's take on the news.
BBC Scotland is beyond the pale:

I actually refer to both Holyrood and Cardiff Bay as county councils simply because they don't have the full powers a national government has.

Billionaire Tom Hunter is the private individual paying for Eck's body to be repatriated

'Alex Salmond devoted his life to Scotland and the Scottish people,' Hunter said.
