That's sad news for sure. Terrific player from an era of some really top class Scottish footballers. Returned as a player/assistant manager to ER for a spell IIRC. His Liverpool days were a little before my time but I remember him in a Bristol City kit from my Panini sticker albums.

My absolute hero as a boy and I followed his career with Forest and Liverpool, then watched him play for Bristol City regularly in the late 70s. I remember him scoring a couple against Liverpool in a 2-1 win for City when Liverpool were European champions. Very sad news, RIP Peter.

I remember when I lived in Dalkeith going to a match there and was totally starstruck with him being near me in a very small crowd. Apparently one of his mates played for Dalkeith. Think all of that area is gone now. Funny how these things stick in your mind from around 60 years ago. RIP Peter you were some player

My earliest memories are of my Dad and Granda having a go at him almost every time he played. "Peter Peter Peter!" in an exasperated tone was a constant from my Dad.
Turns out that there was a personal connection, and that the niggling at him was because they knew what he was capable of. As a young guy, though, I found it hard to equate this "huddy" with "the most complete footballer in Britain" as Shankly described him.
It shows how blessed Scotland was with midfielders in the 70s that he only earned a handful of caps.

Such sad news.
Only reason I'm a Hibby as my sister fancied him and used to take me to Easter Road.
Peter was first Hibs player I say score a goal. It was from the half way line against Dunfermline in 1967. I was devastated when he left.
Unbelievable that he only own 9 caps as without doubt he was one of the best players of his or any other generation. He also had the heart of a lion.
Peter suffered from dementia and used to attend the Hibs monthly dementia meetings at Easter Road and take part in Q&As. I met him many times there and he was a gentleman.
Unfortunately you could see him go downhill gradually although he always looked great.

I can remember interviewing Peter some years ago, I was asking him about his early career. He started at Tynecastle Boys Club and then signed for Hearts Youths. While there he was not very happy because all he wanted to do was play football, he rarely saw a ball, instead they had him doing lots of things around the stadium, he was only 15 at the time.
They asked him to drive the tractor, but he told them he did not know how to. He was then told ‘just do it, it’s not that hard’. He eventually got on the tractor and drove it, he did not know how to steer it, so he ended up driving into a wall, he got off and went home and did not come back, and that is how he ‘crashed out’ of Tynecastle never to return, that is, until he was in a Hibs shirt.
Peter was a tremendous player, another great Hibee who dearly loved this club. The last few seconds of the attached video shows just how much it meant to him.
Such a sad loss, condolences to his family and friends, RIP Peter.

With my first Hibs strip, in 1966, I thought I was really cool only tucking half my strip in to my shorts. All because Peter Cormack did that and somehow I related that to his being classier than others round about him. He was just class in a quality team that boasted a forward line of Scott, Quinn, Stein, Cormack and Stevenson.

That's right, both first half and at Shed end. I was in the south enclosure next to the dug out. Jimmy O'Rourke was sub and I discovered later that Tiny Wharton who used to wear a blazer was the ref.

There were a lot fewer international matches back then but the other problem was that (for Scottish-based players at least) Old Firm players tended to get the nod over other clubs. There was also, of course, a wider talent pool to select from with many top English clubs having Scottish players at their heart. It's actually surprising Scotland weren't more successful back then when you look at the calibre of players available.

I was at an event about Bill Shankly a few years back with a few ex Liverpool players on stage sharing memories. The majority of those in attendance were obviously Liverpool fans. The host noted Peter Cormack was in the audience and gave him a mention and he received a standing ovation. For a club not exactly short on legends I think that is quite a tribute.
I've only seen snippets of him play and heard stories past down but he seems to have been quite the player and a decent man to boot.

Peter Cormack was a decent Goalie as well can mind him keeping a clean sheet versus Hearts and throwing lumps of mud at passing Hearts forwards in a yellow goalie top about three sizes too big for him with a big smile on his face

My first Hibs game was in January 1969 so I was lucky enough to see him at that time and remember it being a huge loss when he left a few years later ( folk rightly have great memories of Tornadoes but team of late 60s / early 70s with Cormack , Marinello , Stanton etc was a fantastic team too ) . Remember him in second spell with us at about time George Best was with us - much slower but with great quality . There were always very strong rumours that he was going to be our manager in the 1980s but for whatever reason it never happened .

Peter Cormack was a Hibernian great.
I only saw him playing a few times, as I was too young to see him first time round. I did however get to meet him in my youth, as my Dad and Uncle both knew him and he was a great guy. So friendly and happy to talk about his experiences.
To put this in perspective for the younger Hibees, I think it’s safe to say that he will remain the only Hibs player to score in victories against Porto, Napoli and Real Madrid!
He is also a legend at Anfield which says a lot with the amount of world class players to pass through those gates. Multiple trophy winner. 🏆

Peter Cormack was my first Hibs' hero, hence my avatar. I only saw him in "live" action once during his prime, as I recall, and it was not his finest hour. He hadn't been available for my first ever Hibs' game in the League Cup against the Pars at East End, to my disappointment and my next game was at ER on Ne'er Day 1970 where he was sent off in an otherwise tedious Nil-Nil with the Hearts. A few weeks later, another sending-off and he was on his way to Forest and I had no hero......until Joe Baker returned. I read somewhere a couple of years or so ago that he was suffering from dementia, like so many players of his generation and earlier. That's such a sad finale.
He truly was a special player. Lots of goals for us, he could play pretty much anywhere and was even an exceptional part-time 'keeper. If he was not the most talented all-rounder who has played for Hibs in my lifetime, I don't know who was. I just wish I had had the opportunity to see more of him in action. The Hibs'TV website used to have highlights of a game at Dens from about 1968 where he played and, if it's still there, you can see his distinctive balls-of-feet, heels-up running style (which reminded me of another legend, the Aussie fast bowler Jeff Thomson).

That jogs a memory of an old video cassette I must still have somewhere called something like Hibernian European Nights which I think has a lot of the footage from those great 60s matches.https://youtu.be/mFeYSJVaYxk?si=I59THmPPgWRwJdlv
Those were the days.

Great tribute video on Liverpool FC website.

Not sure if the link will work but if not easy to find. Some Hibs content and videos of some of Peter's goals with Liverpool
What a brilliant video that is. Superb and what a player.

Really nice obituary in the Telegraph complete with a lot on his time at Hibs and a video of the great night against the mighty Real Madrid.
Peter the great sure enough.

Two sendings off in quick succession led to a THREE MONTH ban!!! The SFA were terrified of a challenge to their darlings!!

As you say, nice obit. But he only scored once against Real. The second was an OG.

Remember reading in the 1968/69 Scottish League Cup Final he was forced to play as a makeshift Centre Forward against Celtic in a 2-6 loss being totally dwarfed by Billy McNeill in his role as loan striker and never got a header or a kick
Hibs were on a roll after defeating Dundee in the Semi at Tiny coming back from 1-0 down to win the game at the death and we fancied our chances against the Champions but a fire at Hampden pushed the final back a few months Colin Stein was sold to Rangers for 100k and his replacement Joe McBride was cup tied
Conspiracy theories abounded even back then. :greengrin

Jeez, I never knew we were 6-0 down before getting a couple back. We took some real doings at Hampden from Celtic during that era despite having so many quality players ourselves. We did put five past them in a Drybrough Cup final tho!
One thing's for sure. Football kits were just great back then. Their best era in my view.

Forget all about this. I’m working from home today and could have taken a walk along to the stadium.

After the service the wake was in the Famous Five.
Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway were present which I thought was a great touch.
