Got some photos tonight. 9pm onwards might be better. Should be seen as far Leeds at least.

Just seen this thread - it was a cracking display.

I've wanted to see the lights for a while now (missed out in May) and had lately become convinced that I was going to be disappointed with them.

At first I was, when I could see nothing but my camera showed up some colour (that doesn't count!) but it was a joy to watch the colours actually appear in the sky. Watched from my garden for some time that night- in hindsight I should have ventured somewhere further/darker to really see it.

I was outside for a few hours earlier watching comet a3 passing overhead.

Quite a sight to behold. Hasn’t been in our skies for c.83k years!

Another potential visible eye comet on the way. Comet 2024 G3.

perihelion expected very early November and peak visibility expected early 2025. Notoriously difficult to predict and no guarantee it will survive it's encounter with the sun (believed to be a first time visitor rather than a returner) but some hope it could reach a magnitude of -0.5. - +1 which would put it on a par with Neowise and A3.

(For reference of anyone who doesn't know the lower the magnitude number the more visible an object is. Venus is -4.6, the moon -11.67 and Mars is 0.23).

The first time I witnessed the Northern light I had been to Pittodrie and and was heading to Pitlochry. This was maybe 45 or more years ago. Definitely in the 1970s.i was between forfar and Coupar Angus and I pulled into the side of the road. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, the most spectacular display in the sky. Unfortunately we didn't have mobile phones with camera back then. Recent display is nothing compared to then!!!
