View Full Version : Dundee Utd away - build up thread

Here we are again..
No game this weekend but 19th October we travel to Tannidice.
David Gray will have the players for 12 days to work with and improve the team.
Hibs also host an open training session on Monday 14th at Easter Road.
Still only 1 win this season and after the weekend’s home loss we head to Dundee to play a Utd team who won away to St Mirren at the weekend 1-0 and now unbeaten in 2 games.
This will be first time Hibs play Utd since April 2023 when Hibs lost 2-1 at Tannidice - the winning goal was in 90 mins from penalty spot.
Dundee Utd are 4 unbeaten against Hibs.
Hibs last beat Utd in December 2021 - 3-1 away from home.
Dundee Utd have only lost 2 of last 16 home games - Rangers and Airdrie.
Both have played 7 games. Dundee Utd sit in 5th on 12 points and Hibs sit 10th on 5 points.
The next game for Hibs after Utd away is the Derby at Easter Road on Sunday 27th.
Will we see Boyle and Newell ? We lacked pace against Motherwell and Boyle also has several goal contributions which we lacked at the weekend. I think if both players are fit they will come in for Cadden and Campbell.
Hopefully a good Hibs crowd behind the goals for this one. Middle block sold out and side blocks about half left.

Newell comes back for Triantis. Boyle and Cadden on the right wing with Miller making way. I would also have Rudi on for Campbell. I think Myko needs a partner and unfortunately Josh Campbell seems to have no understanding of what Myko is going to do.
Dundee is good day out for us travelling from Glasgow, a full bus and refreshments on route arranged, the only thing that can F*** it up is anything less than a win. We need to get our season going and a win in Dundee followed by a derby win is just tonic most of us need right now.

Is it low bar to take a draw based on the respective clubs' form?
Defeat is clearly the most likely outcome so a draw would be decent.

It was just a normal plaster cast he had on on Sunday. that would suggest he's not back training as i'd have thought something more substantial would have been put on the wrist to get him back, hopefully this goes on this week. I also think if there was a chance he would be fit for Dundee he would have been away with Australia.

These international breaks along with the empty league cup fixtures are killing me. Whilst fatigue wise we are fortunate compared to some of our opponents, I would really like to be playing more than once a fortnight 😴
I don’t think we can blame the lack of momentum on our poor form, however it possibly isn’t helping.

We need to get something that's for sure because if we don't we go into a game with a club we've only beaten once in our last 12 attempts on 5 points from a possible 24 after 8 games.
If we end up on 5 points from our first 9 games after the next two fixtures our start to the season will be nothing short of disastrous. We will finish our first round of 11 fixtures away to Ross County ( never easy for us ) and Dundee Utd at home. We won't even have played Aberdeen with our only win being at home to a poor St Johnstone team.
That's the worst case scenario of course, but at this stage it's hard not to look at things that way. To even have a hope of 4th we need at least 2 wins and a draw from our next 4 games ... none of them are against Aberdeen or the uglies and there's no excuse for not getting at least that.

A good few days more recovery for Newell, don't see him starting, needs some minutes to be ready for the derby.
Would assume Levitt will be in for this one if Newell's not starting, would leave either Campbell or Rudi for the other spot.
Don't see us going 4-4-2 but could see a 3-5-2 if there is change with both Myko and Gayle starting, which would mean no Hoilett who is the first name on the team sheet at this present time.

I really hope we'll see Junior, Myko and Gayle all on from the start. We need to put the ball in the opposition net frequently and our record suggests that we are poor at that when we play with a solo striker.

This as Myko is struggling playing the lone striker role, similar to Doidge but as soon as May took temporary charge and played Doidge in a two, bang the goals starting flowing.

Pressure increasing each week on Gray.
He got a very easy time of it in the defeat against Motherwell at home. The away support tend to be less charitable.
5 points in 21 got previous managers sacked.
Has to win this going into the derby, when it could get toxic for Ian Gordon & Kensell.

c120 tickets left in the stand behind the goal. I’d expect they will go during the week. Not sure if DU will open up the stand at the side of the pitch for those who effectively want to PATG. Scottish football being Scottish football, will probably mean they will make sure they do everything in their power to make it difficult/stop people attending so I have my doubts.

We are working our way toward our common goal, any toxicity would be poorly aimed and timed imo.

It’s strange how we have such a noisy committed and growing away support when the last five years have been pretty much all about decline and stagnation on the field.
Personally i have only started going to away games recently after a gap of many years, and (OF/Tynecastle aside) I much prefer them to the experience at ER. My reasons:
- day out in different surroundings, enjoying the company of chums
- with fans whose main agenda is to support their team and not advertise: alcoholism/coke addiction/that they aren’t getting laid/that they have a bad relationship/type 2 diabetes/depression etc
- having a drink with (proper) Scottish football supporters of other clubs (when you avoid the near-stadium rat traps).
Of course this is all subjective and relates to middle aged status. In my teens/early twenties away days would be largely about mischief with chums, some of whom now, from a position of morbid obesity, enjoy criticizing ultras for tamer versions of the same behavior.

Just the usual Scottish football thing where they find any small way they can to discourage folk from going.
Great effort from the Hibs support again though, would be surprised it’ll they don’t end up opening extra seats and we fill a bit more.

Yet tickets that they deemed unfit for initial sale because of their restricted view are the only ones on sale at the moment.
To me that’s a prime example of discouraging people to go. £27 for a view you’re unlikely to see much.
If they opened the lower section of the FP Stand where people had more choice of an unrestricted view or seats that they can sit together in groups now ahead of time, I have no doubt would encourage more people to go. Typically Scottish football would rather shoot itself in the foot.

With the international break quite a few players must have been missing from training and also questionable for the weekend with travel and recovery - mainly Kwon and Miller who have been other side of the world.

Kwon never played a minute and should be back by now I’d think. Miller should have taken some confidence from how he’s done in the two games. Again game was good yesterday so should hopefully be sufficient recovery time.
Need everyone back in and doing their bit this weekend. Feel like I say every week we need a win to get our season going. Needs to happen, can’t just keep saying the same thing.

JDH has been training and 'back on grass' for ages. Never seems to get any further than that. He may have been on the grass and training but not seen him when I have been down there and teh last pic I can see is Aug 1. He was at the Open training though so hopefully fit enough to train with the group now.

Yeah the pole dance game was in 2003 I think, last minute pen. The game I was referring to was the week after the 6-2.
From memory the game after 6-2 was the Zitelli overhead winner at Dens. Might be wrong tho.

Right Hibs, time to get some points on the board starting on Saturday, another international break for SDG to spend with the players but we need to do it on the pitch.
Expect a difficult game, one which we should be looking for 3 points, 1 will only be ok if we get the 3 the week after.
I'm sure we will get team news over the next couple of days, with Triantis not available it will be interesting to see the team, don't think Newell will start so I would like to see Rudi, think we will see Campbell in some position.

Reckon Newell will be back in the team, in for Triantis. There is no way Campbell can play after his performance against Motherwell. That’s a real problem position for us IMO, I don’t know who we play there to link middle to front.

Big decisions for Gray to make tomorrow.
If Boyle isn’t deemed fit enough to start he just can’t start Cadden there again.
Newell will come in for Triantis but that then leaves the other midfield position up for grabs because there is no way he can continue with Josh Campbell after the Motherwell game.

Big challenge to for Gray to get him back involved as a proper option. Since he came back from injury he’s done nothing more than make the numbers up. If we can start getting proper minutes and performances out of him then it would be a big improvement on playing the Cadden brothers or bringing McKirdy on.

Cannot afford to get beat, especially before a derby. If we lose the next 2 games, that’s not good enough. That would be 5 points out of 9 games with only Hearts and St J below us who will probably both benefit from new manager bounces, leaving us bottom. I love Gray but questions should be asked if that’s the case.

No one cares if we play well right now it’s about points. Playing silky attractive football can happen in a few months.
This is a really tough game - a win would be a massive boost.

It’s at the point now where we just need to start winning games semi regularly again. We’ve won 6 of our last 28 games in the league. It’s not just been a bad few weeks or whatever, we’ve been poor for a considerable period of time.
It’s getting to the point where it’ll be more than just a poor or slow start to the season if we don’t start putting points on the board, we’ll find ourselves in trouble. I don’t think the performances have been terrible of late. Not brilliant but I’ve seen a lot worse when we’ve been on poor runs. We’ve got the majority of the squad available, you’ll always have the odd one or two missing, so there can’t really be any excuses. We just need to win some games in the next few weeks, whatever way we can.

That needs to change, and it needs to change tomorrow. If we lose tomorrow, I fear for us this season.
Agreed. Last season we were undoubtedly hard done by, not this season. It's time to stop with the whinging and start winning some points.

Anyone have a spare ticket available for Carling stand (behind the goals) for tomorrow? I know they’re still on sale for the side stand but mates are behind the goals. Cheers!

Had a surge of confidence about this game the last 12 hours.
We’re going on win convincingly, everything is finally going to click
3-0 to the good guys. We’ll go 1-0 up early, a penalty just before half time and then a third around 55 minutes to kill it off
It’s the hope that kills you…
I'll have what he's having.

Really hope we start Dwight Gale 🤞
Would like to see Gayle and Mykola upfront together.

Naive, poor defending throughout the whole of the season so far has put us in the position we are in.
Gray pointed a lack of professionalism at some individuals last time out. That second goal we lost against Motherwell really worried me.
Are some players just making individual errors or are they p*sh.
Time for a solid, error free display and three points.

✳️ Give plenty time travelling to game tomorrow, roadworks on the A90 outside Dundee
✳️ Parking restrictions around the stadium
✳️ Supporter buses will be parked on Neish Street
✳️ All catering kiosks are contactless
✳️ Turnstiles open an hour before KO, 4 for shed end behind the goals and 2 in the Fair Play stand upper

I’d predict
Bursik
Cadden Marv Ohora Obita
Kwon Newell
Youan Rudi Hoillet
Myk
Think Boyle might be there but bench at best
Campbell shouldn’t be anywhere near the first eleven
Think Myk needs dropped tbh. I would start Gayle if he's fit

I’d be surprised if Myko was dropped considering Dundee Utd have big strong defenders….might need Myko’s physical presence for this one .

I’d stick with him tomorrow but he does need to do more.
If he gets a chance tomorrow like he’s had in the last couple of games he needs to put it away. He’s paid to put the ball in the net and not done that enough so far, but I think he’ll play tomorrow.

Here’s a thought.Meet your pals before the game .Buy a ticket for where you can .Watch what happens in the 90 minutes .Catch up with your pals afterwards and you and your mates can have a post match blether .

46 quid for me and a 12 year old. Don't think I will bother. Prices away from home are getting out of order.

Junior to put on another show tomorrow, just need a couple other players to show quality.
Got to be starting Youan over Cadden if we're sticking to the shape of the team, will he play well? That's up to Youan to start performing and trying to get back into the team.
Just good to have Hibs back and hopefully ruin most of our weekends.

I have Iredale, Gayle, Youan, Newell, Boyle, all into the team. How they fit in and into what system I don't know, but they'd all make a big difference.

It’s one player who we’ve got adequate cover for. Every team gets injuries.

That’s one way of looking at it. Another way is that Bowie was briefly looking like being one of our best players, maybe even our best.
An injury to a clubs best player affects results for even the best clubs in the world with ridiculous squad depth.
It’s not an excuse for our poor run of form but it’s quite likely a factor.

It’s not an excuse for our poor run of form but it’s quite likely a factor. No doubt Bowie looked good but it shouldn't make us nearly the worst team in the league losing 1 player
Hopefully we can kick start our season today with a good performance and more importantly 3 points
If we lose today thr pressure really starts to build
Feels like a massive game for us tbh

If we lose today Hearts will end up sending us bottom next week. A win today to get some confidence going and can see us taking that into the Derby and turning them over.

Lose both (entirely feasible given our terrible start to the season) and there's a good chance we'll be looking for yet another manager.

We can have no excuses for where we find ourselves. We’ve simply woefully underperformed. That needs to change today.

Poor attacking just as much to blame, if not more.
Got to disagree.
A poor defence affects confidence throughout the team. The amount of errors made this season which has cost us goals is crippling.
Any decent/good side has a robust, solid defence which does not give away goals.

In the league this season we have scored:
0
0
2
1
2
0
1
One goal tends not to be enough to win a game. We have only twice scored more than one goal, 1 win and 1 draw. The attackers are partially to blame. Against Motherwell we had loads of top end possession yet ended up going a goal behind.
Our goals scored is joint worse in the league with bottom place Hearts. That paints a picture. Goals against however is 6th best.

We need to improve all over the pitch.
We have made changes in off season for new keeper and back line.
No co-incidence they looked the best against Rangers and we played well that day - but we still lost and Miller was possibly at fault.
We need to be harder to play against and score against. The goals against this season have been comical at times - dodgy pass backs - switching off at free kicks - long throws etc.
We also need the strikers and midfield to step up and convert / score out of nothing or our possession when in top.
That’s what a team is about. If we are disjointed we will continue to see draws or losses and questions will rightly be asked about team selection and recruitment.

Hopefully. But on current form that's all it is. Hope.
United winning today would not be a shock. On paper we would appear to be marginally better than Hearts but when you take into consideration our appalling derby record it wouldn't be a shock to lose to them as well. I'd take two draws now.

Based on the size of our club we're well below where we should be, but this squad has so far done next to nothing to indicate they're underperforming. They may just not be very good.
FWIW I think Bowie being out for most of the season is a valid excuse. He's the only player I've seen this season who made me think he had something a bit different about him. A potential game-changer type.
