Following on from the recent restaurant reviews thread and a video I saw earlier of a guy from a YouTube page called ‘Topjaw’ interviewing an Edinburgh chef..

What’s everybody's..

Best restaurant in Edinburgh - Rollo
Best value restaurant in Edinburgh - Chez Jules
Most overrated restaurant in Edinburgh - The Ivy
Best bar/pub/cocktail bar - The Bailie
Best coffee shop - Artisan Roast
Top of your list to try - Cafe Pomelo

I'm going to Chez Jules soon so looking forward to that.

I asked Artisan Roast for some strong espresso beans a while back and the stuff they gave me made something akin to dishwater.

I'm barred from The Bailie as we seemingly upset some regulars by daring to have fun at Christmas a few years ago.

Don't know the others.

Best restaurant in Edinburgh - Timberyard
Best value restaurant in Edinburgh - Mosque Kitchen (the one actually at the Mosque)
Most overrated restaurant in Edinburgh - Tattu. Style over substance, a restaurant designed for instagram with food as an afterthought.
Best bar/pub/cocktail bar - The Guildford
Best coffee shop - Beatnik
Top of your list to try - Dutchas on Great Junction Street

The Ivy is over-rated everywhere.

Have you got any Gordon Ramsey places in Edinburgh? They are utter guff!

I’ve never been to any other Ivy but I’m not surprised to hear that :agree:

I got a voucher for the one at St Andrews Square. It was absolutely crap.

Looking at other posters replies, Tattu and Chaophraya are good shouts in the overrated category and Noto is excellent as easty suggested. If you like Noto then Tipo, which is the same chef, is also very good :agree:

I’ve been to the Birmingham, Westminster and Liverpool Street ones. Loads of boil-in-the-bag rubbish in each!

Cotè Brasserie is a similar set up.

And don’t get me started on the ubiquitous Brake Bros crap that you get in London pubs!! I blame Brexit.

Really ? You must have had a bad experience sorry to hear that it happens

Definitely my go to place for lunch but just my recommendation based on my experience

Lots of recent five star reviews on trip advisor a few not so good as well

I am a big critic of their normal prices and their Burger joint but their lunch is value and a nice place to catch up with friends or treat the other half

Will be up for the St Mirren game but staying at Livingston M8, looking like south Queensferry have put their prices up.

Anyway, my mum likes her fish supper so was thinking about going for dinner on the Sunday, Googled it and looks like Bertie's on Victoria street is the best?

Bertie’s is very good like most things that The Vittoria Group do. My business partner was the Group Chef for Vittoria Group , he designed the kitchen layout, the menu and trained all the original staff in the kitchen. The menu has stayed pretty much the same since he left, tbe methods have also mostly remained the same so it’s still pretty much as good now as it was when it opened going by what different people have told. It can get very busy and be pretty noisy when it’s full but overall very good if not a tad pricey.

Anyone know what the script is with Vittoria’s Leith Walk / Brunswick Place ?

Is it a separate entity now half and half or still owned by the family?

Passed the other week and the signage was confusing to say the least

Worth reminding folk that they still do discount for ST holders at all branches

Same place and owners, it's just been split into two distinct sections, normal Vittoria is as it's always been and the Brunswick Book Club is more of a bar/bistro section

Plenty of positive reviews online as highlighted but I take your point

Scotts is lovely and is a nice treat every now and again. There's a place just round the corner called Down The Hatch. It's not much to look at but it does the most amazing burgers, toasties, dirty fries etc. Mouthwatering and messy!

It's some of my favourite dishes and definitely cuisine. We used to go to Hanam's (now called Daika I think?), but had a bad experience with booking/serivce the last time so haven't been back (shame, as the food was always decent).

Dean Banks at the Pompadour on Wednesday, the food was excellent, recently at Martin Wishart and the food at the Pomp was better. The only downside was we were the only table for the majority of our time there, we had the tasting menu with matching wines which I can’t fault but the atmosphere of an empty restaurant is not ideal. The Pompadour has always suffered from not having an on street presence/entrance but it’s a superb dining room which is listed. My good friend and I meet up quarterly for a fine dining experience, this was up there with our favourite so far for the food.

I've always thought it seemed a bit of an odd concept for a restaurant. Having mashed potato as the dominant selling point has obviously worked for them but I can't say it's ever been somewhere I've been tempted to try.

I don't think we are out of the woods by a long way yet when it comes to hospitality. My work have had 2 notifications of businesses going into administration this week, both established names and both have been around for years.

There are people who are clearly making it work but generally speaking it's still a pretty grim market.

Bells Diner was very popular years ago, especially for their burgers.

I didn't like them as there was a background taste that was later revealed to be Arowmat flavouring: the devil food of all time !

They had 3 properties right next to each other on St Vincent Street in Glasgow for a while: Topalabamba, Chakoo and Mezedakia (which is now a Thai place, sadly).

I like their small plate approach and don't find them too expensive for what they are. Used to be my go-to for tacos (Topa) but I've found the one on Lothian Rd to be really hit or miss.

Been to a few restaurants in recent days:
The Pakora Bar: Didn’t realise they’d moved, it loses a bit of charm in the much bigger place but at least it’s easier to get a table. Chicken pakora and haggis pakora both in top form, but the lamb samosa chat was the star, absolutely outstanding

Monteith’s (High Street): Second time we’ve been, really high quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. I had the venison loin, wife had the fillet steak. Both beautiful. Bit naughty you have to pay for the sides (though I guess that’s quite common these days) and the potato wedges kind of thing didn’t really go with the venison as well as maybe mash or a proper roast potato

Tapa (Shore Place): Been to plenty of tapas places over the years, but never one specialising in the Iberian Black Pig! End result is that it’s almost beef-like in consistency, so we had solomillo (similar to sirloin) and the slow cooked cheeks which were very similar to beef cheeks. The festive special were turkey & stuffing croquettes which tasted as mad (and good) as they sound. And, to top it all off, we’d landed lucky that they were doing an offer for 50% off the food, though the prices were pretty reasonable anyway tbf

Tom Kitchens "Kora" to close at the end of the month. A little surprised as whenever I've went it's been busy enough.
Dunno if they've experienced problems or whether it's just the natural lifespan of restaurants these days (2-3 years).

Even in good economic times restaurant are a hard business to make decent money from, and very labour and time extensive.

I can imagine with the current finances in the country we'll see quite a few more going. Most places don't have scope to increase prices further, despite costs increasing from suppliers, as a lot of venues are already charging high prices which are already at the limit for what is acceptable to a lot of people IMO.

I've spent much of the last year fielding calls and emails from customers in hospitality wanting better pricing as they just have nowhere else to go with price increases to their customers. Unfortunately for me my products are ones that have no resell value to the customer. Meat, veg or wine yields a profit for them; blue roll, dishwasher detergent and hand towels, whilst essential, don't so we are the last to be paid and the first to be dropped.

Unfortunately we are operating in the same economic climate so don't have much scope for improvement. Neither does anyone else though so we get a lot of retention by default really.

A tough gig just now and I'd expect a lot to go this month in what is traditionally a quiet period before Valentine's Day and the Six Nations offers a bit of respite.

Tom Kitchens "Kora" to close at the end of the month. A little surprised as whenever I've went it's been busy enough.
Dunno if they've experienced problems or whether it's just the natural lifespan of restaurants these days (2-3 years).

Taking advantage of the break in the lease and getting out before being tied down for several more years. As others have said it’s extremely tough in January for the hospitality industry, extreme belt tightening is required. My own business down more than 50% over the last three nights, it was expected though!

Most restaurants do January deals to get punters in the door, they'll lose a wee bit on food and hope to make it up with alcohol sales.

Times are tough for sure , although does every supplier not have at least one competitor ?

I was in food service sales all my career in one way or another and I was constantly fire fighting price and quality alternatives.

Competition is good in a way: it meant that our buyers were pushed to negotiate better deals with our suppliers etc down the line.

I've often thought the council could do a bit more to keep the tourists coming in Jan/Feb. Not sure what but for too often it feels like it's all concentrated into August and December

My experience is slightly different, admittedly the mass tourism is when you have mentioned but there is a steady stream of tourists into Edinburgh for a far greater period than that.Last year for example saw a steady stream into the shop through September , October and November. Italians, Germans, Australians, and Americans seemed to be the core of them.

Went to Omar Khayyam for the first time in years on Saturday night. I really enjoyed it. Some different things on the menu compared to your standard curry place. BYOB with no corkage charge was a bonus. Weirdly, we had tried to book about 6 different places on Saturday with a few weeks notice and really struggled to get anything that wasn't a 9pm booking, other than there. Was there something on?

Did Prahna's boozy brunch yesterday. Was excellent too, even though I was definitely in the minority being male there. Was worried to begin with as there was a big table full of women who were doing high pitched shrieking to begin with that was really bugging me but they soon quietened down.

Yeah South Queensferry, not sure about how new the management is, been going there for about the last seven years, it’s had a refurb a few years ago so not sure if that was also a management change. We get a local taxi company from there to pick us up in Edinburgh and return us about three hours later, plenty wine and beer flows in that time as well as the food 😀

I’ve always found the Hawes Inn to be a bit of an unsung hero.

Not the fanciest but it’s never disappointed.

We live in Leith but have loads of family over in Fife / Kinross so it makes for an ideal place to meet folk halfway, and there’s a broad enough menu that everybody always ends up with something they like.

Was in Cafe Andaluz at Raeburn Place recently.

Very little Vegan food unfortunately. I could have had chips and a choice (or both) of two salads.

They could do a Vegan Paella, but it's made for two and is £30.00. I called in advance and asked if they could make it for one. No was the reply.

On the night, I ordered the Paella. Just as well, as the other folk were still hungry after their three wee (and they were very wee) plates. Paella was demolished.

Food was good, prices were pretty expensive, service was good, portions were very small and I felt happy enough that my friends enjoyed my food, but they need to be more inclusive on the menu front.

That’s ridiculous for two chain restaurants. There’s loads of independent restaurants around that are significantly cheaper than that. Infact I can think of 3 restaurants on the Michelin Guide that I’ve been to in the last few months that would be significantly cheaper in two cases, and roughly the same in the others case.

Madness if they’re charging that.

I’ve been to Tipo on Hanover Street recently and walked away just under £100 and that was with a bottle of wine, service charge etc for two. It’s a Michelin Guide restaurant. Sotto, another Michelin guide Italian, I was about £110 for two, so roughly the same as Amarone. I’m not sure where places like Amarone and Chaophraya get off charging what they do tbh, I went to Chaophraya last year and couldn’t believe the total bill for what we had, both in terms of quality and quantity.
