View Full Version : Should we now lower our expectations for the rest of the season?

Like many Hibs fans, my expectations for this season were not high. However, the arrival of a 600k striker made me sit up and take some notice and his early showings had started to make me think we could do better than expected.
For a signing of that calibre to be effectively ruled out for most of the season is a hell of a blow. Sure, we shouldn't be over reliant on one player, but without Bowie we immediately feel a great deal less potent.
Should we cut Gray and the club some slack on that basis and be less critical if we end up loitering around the bottom half of the table again?

Don't get your hopes up....were not gonna be loitering in the bottom half.

We've just signed Gayle, Hoillet hasn't kicked a ball for us yet and the squad has just had 2 weeks training together.
Lets just chill out and see where the season goes eh?

What expectations?
The expectation that we'll finish anywhere between relegated and third. Historically, and in terms of ambition, it is the least we should expect.
Sack the board if it doesn't happen.

Yes, fingers crossed things turn out better than expected, but my point is that signing a £600,000 player is, for a club like Hibs, a major investment and Bowie was clearly a player Gray was planning to shape things around. To be almost instantly deprived of that player through injury is exceptionally unfortunate for him and he now has to rethink his plans. Personally I think he probably deserves to be cut a little slack, even if things go wrong tomorrow.

I mean my expectation was that we'll be in a relegation fight so can't get much lower.

My expectation was that we will make top 6 but won’t be in the battle for 3rd. That’s still my expectation. Losing Bowie is a blow, but a Hoilett, Gayle and Miko will all score goals. Time for Boyler and Youan to give something back to the shirt too. Plus Rudi will get goals from Midfield and I fancy Kwon and Nectar to get a few too.
5th place beckons.. not great, but an improvement and then I believe we will be competing for 3rd next year. I do think that we need to chill out as a support, enjoy the ride, there will be ups and downs as ever. Bowie’s injury is a downer.. but signing Dwight is great. GGTTH

If all of them are scoring regularly we will do better than 5th if Gray can settle the defence.
Big game tomorrow.

So we have Bowie out injured.
Myko with a history of injury.
Hoillet coming back off an injury.
Gayle coming back off an injury.
Boyle who has suffered 2 major injuries.
Youan who has been injured and really doesn't want to be here.
That's our forward line to get us through til January, what could go wrong 😁🤣

Think the OP has a point.
Our other strikers also have fairly significant question marks over their durability.
We’ve certainly took a risk up front in that regard, and our results could well suffer as a result.
Edit see the poster above has made the same point already

I didn't get to where I am today by having expectations.
I do however have hopes and it would be nice to think we could beat st Johnstone. That's where we have been for a while.
Nearly everyone could be our "bogey team".

Nah we’ve kept youan so that eases the loss of Bowie.
Add in Hoilett and Gayle and we should still have enough to compete.
The problem is defensively, get that sorted and we’ll do ok.

I personally don't think the Bowie Injury will ultimately affect our league position too much come end of the season. I expect us to finish 6th or Lower and that's with or without Bowie. This is yet another transition season I'm afraid until next year when we can offload all the below par players we gifted long term contracts too.
Right now if we got top 6 I'd be quite happy.

Being in the top 6 is a starting point. When we make it there is a good chance we would be playing for 4th or 5th with an outside chance of us going for 3rd. I don’t understand why fans turn up their nose at top 6, it opens up opportunities for European football the following season.

I agree.
Miss out on top 6 and a failure of a season is locked in.
Make top 6 and you’ve normally got a few league places at stake based on post-split form.
In itself it isn’t a success but it’s a gateway through which the possibility of success stays on the table late into the season.

Everyone's expectations are different. Bowie has looked promising but I wouldn't say expectations will change that much based on him being out. Not mine anyway. We're not talking about a striker who scored 20 goals for us last season.

Measure ourselves against the opposition. They are all a bit S*** right now minus Aberdeen. If the players we have available click we will be just fine.

In 2022 we missed out on top 6 on last pre split day after terrible run of injuries . Manager sacked .
In 2023 we scraped into top 6 on last pre split day after dropping points ( did we really care about making top 6 ? ) , finished 5th and got Europe but threw away chance of 4th on last day and had good chances of 3rd . Manager not sacked till poor start to next season .
In 2024 we were within seconds of top 6 . If we`d made top 6 we might well have made 5th , avoided LC groups and Kelty humiliation and had a few European games to remember like in 2023 .
So small margins . Getting into top 6 is nothing to celebrate but is a realistic first target .

Top 6 is definitely possible. As Unseen said, if we sort out the defence we'll move a long way in the right direction. Losing KB is a huge blow but we still have players who can score. We just need to keep them all fit to play. I certainly expect 3 points against St J. They used to be our nemesis but time has done them fewer favours than us.

Expectations are exactly where they have been since Jack Ross went (timing wise). We now struggle to get into the top six, rarely win derbies and are getting worse by each season that passes. It’s a terrible cycle we’re in and be it bad luck or bad judgment by the club it’s really hard to see an end to it. Hopefully we get some injured and unfit players on the pitch again as the current situation is not helping one bit. We’ve got more crocs than the croc store. 😂

Still have no idea what to expect Tbh. Having only seen us 3 times this season - Kelty Celtic and Dundee it's hard to make judgements yet based on those very different games.
If the guys we have signed offer us on the park what they would seem to on paper then we can still have a promising season but still to early to tell.
And in the dugout I think it's important we get a performance today as well as a result to have some faith that DG knows what he's doing.

Let's see how your wishlist goes, eh.

Maybe they should just relegate us now and have done with it.
I used to think the poster must be great fun to attend games with. Then the penny dropped.
