Hibs sign Dwight Gayle! He’s a bit of a blow-hard but should breeze it in the SPL, not quite a Harry Kane (a few less knots on his contract nae doot). Still, if he’s gust of honour at the player of the year awards, having replicated Turnbull’s Tornados, I’m sure he’ll go down a storm!

I'm pretty happy with this short term signing but hey, it's Hibs so I just hope we're not farting against the wind

Scored 6 goals in his last 51 games .... admittedly 3 in 6 for Derby County this year. I'll contain my rampant excitement about his ability to 'rip it up in this league' until I see him play.

As it stands his 3 in 45 for WBA hardly fills me with optimism ... lost count of the number of 'he's still got enough to be good at our level' players who have crashed and burned in this league.

My only concern with him is can we keep him fit , if we do I think we have a good player on our hands …

All but 6 of those games were for Stoke who played him in midfield rather than up front - not sure why they played him in midfield or in what sort of midfield position.

NB not a great return for a midfielder either but he certainly seems to score when played up front.

He was brilliant for Newcatsle in the Championship, I was down at a few games and his goalscoring record was unreal. He was a real poacher type, I think about 20 of his goals came from in or around the 6 yard box although he did hit a couple of decent free kicks as well and wasn't afraid to shoot from distance. Never really stepped up to Premier League level (with Newcastle, I've no idea what he was like with Crystal Palace) but he never got a lot of game time and there were persistent rumours of a falling out and/or contractual situation behind the scenes.

I'm not sure about him 'tearing it up' at this level anymore. We tend to underestimate how tough a league the Scottish Premiership is to play in but he could well prove a useful addition, particularly if he has retained that habit of being in the right place at the right time.

He played well and scored goals for Palace, the Holmsdale (and the other stands to be fair) loved him!!

I am delighted with the signing. I get the fitness and age thing but if he stays fit and is focused he will score goals for us and as has been said already we don’t have a type of striker like him. Hugely experienced as well.

I'm sure that's nowhere near correct. Too many seasons with low returns. One in 7 or 8 more likely.

Company I was working with sponsored Palace so it was rude not to go along.[emoji6]

Good memories, good people in pubs around the ground before the game.

394 games, 149 goals. Very good record actually.

You'll do well to find a striker with 1 goal every 8 games.

The only thing I welcome in this signing is he is different to the other forwards we have. Vente was too and played most of his games facing our goal in a midfield area. My gut says he will be injured much of the time and the game will be too quick and physical the rest of teh time. He may get the odd goal but I doubt we will remember he was here in a couple of years. Think Kris Commons. I am desperate to be proven wrong on all those counts apart from teh different type of player

Kris Commons was absolutely excellent for us, and secured 6 very important points. A brilliant emergency loan. Hopefully Gayle is at a similar level.

My figure was just a complete guess pulled out of thin air. I rate him as a player and I've followed his progress since he played for my hometown team Palace and I read he's only scored 7 in the last five seasons. He's had impressive periods and fallow periods and lots of time off with injury. I'm just trying to stay grounded here.

Hopefully nothing to worry about when you put it like that , just remember him getting a fair few injuries at Newcastle and while I rated him I always thought he was a bit injury prone.

When he played which was just over 4 games in second half of the season he contributed. He was came from a level a good bit higher than we were playing at, played Champions League the year before he signed and was playing 90 minutes for the top team a year before he arrived. Unfortunately the clock started to run out for him in terms of fitness and availabity and he was dormant for a good while before signing for us.

Gayle was a free transfer from a team at the top of a division which I would argue is a good bit below us and managed the equivalent of under 9 games of play since the start of last season. The season before that at the Championship level he was a goal every 9.1 games and featured for the equivalent of 27 games playing mostly at CF and also some games on the LW and AM. No doubt he was a player at a level above us for much of his career but I'm not overly impressed by his recent record and ability to play. If Commons was a pay to play he would have represented good value. Two goals v Falkirk and Dumbarton the first a free kick suggests he was more than able to play a full league down from where he was but just not very often. McGeady was the same. He still had quality but you don't affect the game sitting in the stand and arguably he may had had some ill effects in the dressing room. You wonder why Gayle has been out of contract twice recently and he isn't a stranger to dressing room bust ups with coaching staff. "

Dwight Gayle and coach Graeme Jones had a 'bad-tempered showdown' where Jones said 'it's always about you' to Gayle and he replied 'it's always been about you since you've been with England.'"

Again though there is always the chance he stays fit and if he does he may still have enough in the tank to contribute. I'm hopeful that he does but my guess is he won't and I would far rather we had invested in Ruari Paton or similar who are on the upwards trajectory of their careers. We won't know who is right until he leaves if it was a good signing and even then, like Commons, we may have different perspectives and both be correct with evidence to back that up

Kris Commons was literally only at Hibs for 5 matches. It was an emergency loan. He was not injured while at Hibs.

League 1 is our level of market for players and I'd say not too dissimilar a level to most Scottish top flight teams.

One thing's for sure, Gayle's now carrying a far greater weight of expectation on his shoulders than he was when he signed yesterday.

Do watch a wee bit of league one, sometimes live, and theres plenty dross in there. 5 or 6 years ago I'd expect Hibs to thump these sides, these days I'm not so sure but looking forward to an upturn.

We would wipe the floor with 95% of teams in that league.

Top end - give me Wrexham and Stockport over Rangers and Aberdeen any day of the week.

Bottom end - Give me Cambridge and Leyton Orient over St Johnston and Ross county any day off the week.

Mid table same applies.

Disappointed to hear Gray's interview all but confirm we won't see any sign of Gayle this weekend. He should have been asked about Youan and Hoilett. Surely we can get them into the squad tomorrow if they've been back in training and played a bounce game. We need the 3 points here and those two massively increase our threat!

No mention of them, what’s that all about, it’s a never ending series of injured or unfit players or new players not yet ready. Why does it always feel the same with Hibs?

We should have a decent team by the split

Yeah, bit frustrating. Still seem to be bringing in players not ready to play - even though the message pre season was the need to sign robust players ready to come in hitting the ground running on day 1.

Good things come to those who wait though...
