Yeah, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Cracking goal.

I thought at the game he meant it, was happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Seeing it back, less sure.

Either way, don’t care!

A player of such quality doesn't make mistakes.

He meant it in the sense that he was whipping it into a dangerous area and that can happen, he didn't actively shoot imo

Definitely. He was inspired by Myko's first half cracker. Our skipper stepped up to say "Who needs Luke McCowan anyway?".

Now, maybe another 10 this season, Joe, please?

Of course he did. Best midfielder at the club for a reason :greengrin

The way he celebrated with Boyle made me think it was something they had tried in training.

He meant it,his body language and direction of travel after hitting it suggest he knew it was bound for the top left corner.

I wasn’t sure though I’m going to give Joe the benefit of doubt and say he meant it , cracking goal and will be one on the list of goals of the season for us .

You could tell the way his leg came back and he positioned himself before contact it was a shot. Those fuds on Sportscene are clueless and frankly bitter.

Not a chance that was deliberate imo but we’ll take it :agree:

Hibs fans have been saying the same 🫣

In the EPL that would be world class. It's only a fluke up here

Jim44

Trust the BBC to try to turn a positive into a negative because it involves Hibs. If that had been Callum McGregor, they would have been in raptures.

It looked like a cross but they always say crosses should ideally be aimed at the back post - so if it was it was pretty much perfect so the question of whether the goal was intentionsl is pretty much a moot point.

100% a speculative effort that caught the keeper napping.

Let's be honest, it was an overhit cross.

If Joe Newell is capable of scoring goals like that why hasn't he been doing it on a regular basis?

Not complaining mind - we need any good fortune that's going our way at the moment. :aok:

I'm not sure the argument about doing it once means you should do it regularly holds up really

I saw Chic Charnley and Pat McGinlay score from the halfway line a few weeks apart, they were capable, but I never saw either do it again

Looked to me that Newell meant it based on how he struck it, the direction and most importantly the pace.

He may not attempt it again but it's still something else for keepers to think about next time we have a corner.

Mad! The guy's clearly on a hiding to nothing with some. Not a dig at anyone who thinks he didn't... but he obviously did! Great goal! I would agree with whoever said it looked like a training ground move. The pass from Boyle is designed for first time whippage! Nailed it

:agree::agree:

He was obviously attempting to swing it in to a dangerous area, but no chance was it meant as a shot. Surely people aren't actually believing that? Are they?!

It looked meant to me.

A curling hit towards goal where it might go in, or a player might get a head on it to make sure or a more alert keeper might tip over the bar.

I imagine there would be a dedicated thread of many pages discussing the goal had it been Josef Bursik letting that one sail over him..!

Skol
02-09-2024, 07:17 PM
There is no way that was meant, albeit he was whipping the ball in to a danger zone knowing a goal was possible if he got it right and got lucky.

Well done joe

Watching that goal back, I think he meant it. Great strike from him, hopefully we see him chip in with more goals this season.

Was interesting that we had already had a shot from our own half. Maybe one of the coaches had noticed he stands off his line and mentioned it?

I didn't notice his positioning at the goal but was it wrong?

If his aim was to cross it, then he could have done that direct from the corner. Looked like a set piece to me.

Teams often change the angle of a cross from corners or free kicks with a pass to an opponent. Thats what this looked like to me.

I genuinely don't think footballers at that level are shooting from there. It's not a clever play. Unless Newell confirms he meant it, I'll be putting it down as a whipped ball into a dangerous area, and we got a wee bit of luck.
