Ok, firstly I'm sat here by the pool on a hot Sacramento evening and I've had a good few drinks, but I wanted to start a thread to talk about today's deadline day window and what's going on at large with our club.
To end today with by all accounts a pretty unconvincing defender and a defensive midfielder that alot of us weren't bothered about in the slightest first time round, is absolutely shambolic.
Truly what is going on. There's clearly been a huge fall out with Foley and the rest of the board. From what we were promised we literally couldn't have landed up any further from it. 'A few million for the squad' was Bill's words. To not even end up with ONE SINGLE player from the Black Knights group during the entire window is worrying beyond words.
Then there's the whole McKay fiasco. Honestly. Serious pressure and words need to be expressed from us fans about this situation we find ourselves in with our club. Unacceptable is putting it mildly!!

The McCowan fiasco not unless you mean MM ?
Let’s be honest as soon as Celtic were interested he LM was only going one place to warm the bench and set himself up for life for his family might get a game against lowly SPFL clubs
Cannot see this lot keeping us in the top six SDG needs to work the oracle on the pitch and get this squad to gel scour the free agents market decide on his best eleven and as a club we need to build bridges with the BK’s
A free agent goalkeeper would be nice but they don’t grow on trees

At least you've admitted you've been drinking. A lot of booze fuelled hyperbole in there 😂 We signed 10 players, although I guess, based on the above, that you've written most of them off as ***** already. It's not that the club hasn't been active or the manager backed etc.

I can’t speak for the OP but I’d say that I’ve pretty much written off all but 2 of our 11 signings. If the objective is to get Hibs to the acceptable position of 6th, it doesn’t take a clever person to run that stats and background checks on these guys to know that they are unlikely to deliver.

Yet still to address the one key attribute missing from the side in the middle of the park.
We’ve more defensive midfielders than we know what to do with.

We also needed centre backs, full backs, options in the centre up top, CDMs etc etc. The quality of some of the signings in those positions remains to be seen right enough but Rome wasn't built in a day. Would people have been happy with the attacking central midfielder position sorted but only Vente as a senior central striking option??
Of course not

St mirren, Dundee, killie all seem to function as better than the sum of there parts
How has Sylla looked so good at Dundee when all the stats and his career have been pants
We have far better forward players than all of them
Defensively it's up for debate after a poor start but then we've only recently signed to players to start in midfield

Don’t know how anyone can defend the window
4 loans and 5 free signings out the 11.
Yet we STILL don’t have a certain profile of midfielder we desperately need. It’s beyond insane at this point and is neglect of one of the biggest problems.
Should Kwon be injured or can’t play like matches v Celtic then we line up with the same midfield that couldn’t string 2 wins together last season.
Do you know how crackers that is.

Guess that played into not getting everyone we wanted but we've effectively tried to change 2 out of the 3

“Quality over quantity.”
There was maybe a good reason he was at Ross County. There’s coming a time where Mackay’s role and contribution is put under some scrutiny. Being able to field an entire starting 11 made up of defensive midfielders isn’t really following the strategy he proclaims.
“Mackay is seeking quality over quantity in his summer recruitment, as he looks to help David Gray strengthen the squad and improve on Hibernian's disappointing performance in the previous Scottish Premiership season.
The tie-up with Bournemouth, which was formalised last season through the Black Knight FC stake, allows Mackay to work closely with Cherries chief Simon Francis.
Mackay sees this relationship as an important part of his plans for Hibernian's future.
However, the former Ross County boss acknowledges that before bringing in new players, Hibernian must first offload any underperforming members of the squad. Then focus will be on adding only those individuals who can make an immediate impact on the first team, rather than bringing several players in through the Bournemouth link without a real purpose.”

He has. Point re black knights connection though let’s not gloss over that
it seemed to work for us last transfer window and after the alleged fallout and Foley saying we’re not listening we get no benefit from it at all this window to help us try and get European Football
Huge pressure now on Gray to get a result at Killie

By bringing in 2 players that play in the same position. If David Gray thinks he needs 2 DM against most teams in this league he won’t be here long.
Especially when he have no one creative to play in front of them.

And if one gets injured, then what? The biggest problem with the midfield is that we’ve not had a proper number six which has meant that any one of Newell, Levitt, Campbell, NMW, or any other has had to play that role, which they’re not accustomed to, and it weakens the whole midfield. If we just stick with Kwon and he’s injured or we’re playing Celti, we’re back to that.
You win games in this league by being hard to beat. You get the right to play attractive football by winning your battles first and imposing yourself on the game.
The single most important thing to a team wanting to play attacking football is a solid defensive base.

Our midfield has been dysfunctional for literally years. It's mediocrity undermines our defence and blunts our attack. Being apparently prepared to shoot their wad to the tune of almost £1 million on McCowan meant that the kind of structure and threat a player like him brings to a side is clearly missing.
To not therefore have been working on others simultaneously in case of McCowan not coming is inept to say the least. It would have both given us some degree of leverage in our Dundee negotiations earlier on and the safety net of not losing out on a player for that role altogether. As it is we've signed the usual lucky bag, not addressed some key weakness in quality and depth and we're left with largely the same one-paced, guileless, 2nd rate midfield we've had for years now.
They seem to have managed to torch the Black Knights relationship as we got eff all from there. All while having taken in over £10 million in capital recently and with the wage bill being axed next summer with a shed load of players out of contract. We may not get another opportunity like this for years or decades. It is hard to overstate just how much of a complete James Hunt has been made of this window.
We weren't ready for the start of the season and were still not ready for it now. Either our personnel or our structure - or both - isn't working. It's painfully obvious.

Kwon played in a flat 2 for St Mirren. He isn’t just a defensive midfielder.

Failed to sign our number one target
Unable to sell an unhappy player who expected to leave
Got a ridiculous amount of midfielders
Ian Gordon and Sunbed Sid have a lot to answer for

If he was out number one target then we should have signed him at the start of the window.
Definitely think there has to be questions over this link with Bournemouth. Amazed we haven't loaned in any of their players.

The club was obviously pinning their hopes on McCowan but it’s not the first time Celtic have stepped in when a player like that is available even if they don’t really need him. It’s the way things are in Scottish football and even if BF gave us £10m we still couldn’t compete financially with Celtic. It’s a disappointing window but on the plus side a lot of the dross have been moved out and the signing of Bowie could turn out to be one of the best for a long time. Unfortunately we still look weak defensively and unbalanced in midfield which doesn’t suggest we are likely to see a turnaround in fortunes any time soon.

Yes, and that's too many. We never seem to get round to trimming our squad. A new manager comes in and this time 11 new players. We signed two defensive mids in January on permanent deals who already look surplus to requirements. How long before they need to be loaned out to save on wages or get game time? I'd say January at the latest.
One caveat with the two new players yesterday is that they can play different positions so offer a degree of flexibility. It sounds like Triantis has been signed to play midfield but could cover in defence (make of that what you will). And Iredale can play left of a three or left back so may not be a bad back up option as he can provide some cover for Obita.
As for the Black Knights link up. Who knows what's going on there. A huge disappointment.

We’ve got rid of a load of players. Unfortunately you can’t make players leave if no one wants to pay them but we’ve made better progress on that than I’d expected.

I heard that but haven't seen it backed up with names. I assume a lot of those must be development rather than first team players?
It would be interesting to see a list of players who have come in and gone out. I'm not convinced the first team squad has been trimmed much, if at all. There is far too much turnover of players in a short time for my liking. Presumably we are still paying a chunk of the salaries of all these players on loan too.

Midfield is dreadful but I feel it needs a bit grit as much as creativity. Maybe Kwon will provide? If not then we’ll be hunting for a new manager soon enough. And it will be his own fault.
