RIP Sven

I was there that magical night in Munich. Until a certain day in 2016 that was my favourite football memory and experience.

A decent man and the football world has lost a good one.

Not sure the women in his life would call him a decent man!

It was only latterly I realised just how successful a manager he had been in his heyday.

He seemed well loved by the fans of many of the clubs he managed.

RIP.

Very sad. Above all else he seemed a genuinely good human being.

One of the things I remember most about him which was quite bizarre at the time was when he joined Notts County as director of football which he was lied to about having plenty of money to sign players etc , at one point I read he had Roberto Mancini lined up to be their manager ….

Sadly it all went wrong and Notts County found themselves 7 million in debt and in trouble. Eriksson apparently waved away a multi million pound pay off in order to help the club which he probably didn’t have too .

Everyone in life makes mistakes and has their flaws though one thing that I didn’t realise until I checked up on it , was what a truly great football manager he was …

RIP Sven .

Watched the Sven documentary the other night and hadn't realised the amount of trophies he won (particularly whilst managing in Italy). He came across very well in the film, very personable and genuine whilst also admitting his flaws. RIP Sven.

Just watched it tonight and have to say thoroughly enjoyed it. Fantastic manager ahead of his time. 7 trophies in 3 years at Lazio unbelievable.

All of the tributes today tell you how loved & respected he truely was.

His proudest achievement his children. That’s all any of us can ask when our time is near that our children or loved ones are with us surrounded by love. RIP Sven for a life well lived.

Agree with the (remaining) posts above. A kind calm and generous man, sadly ill-equipped to deal with a brutal English anti-foreigner press corps who were desperate to take him down and for him to fail. He did, then they got Steve Mclaren instead.

Yes saw a bit on the news he had to deal with phone hacking and also the fake sheik. He said he would tell his kids he was going on holiday only to find paparazzi wherever he went. What a nightmare. Surprised he stayed with England as long as he did.

R.I.P. Seemed a decent guy. Even as an England manager he was hard to dislike the man.

One of the pieces on SSN yesterday mentioned the tabloid press using the 'dark arts' of journalism against him, was also interesting to hear he never managed at Wembley so that his team played around the country heightening his/their appeal to fans

Quotes from 2 were very sympathetic to him, you perhaps need to think before hitting the keyboard.

His story at Notts County was a bizarre one. All manner of things were going on. He famously said he knew something was 'very, very wrong at Notts County when the milk bill hadn't been paid'.

I liked and respected him. I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly at a countryside restaurant in Nottinghamshire. when he was leaving at the same time with his driver. A complete gentleman as you might expect, friendly, open and with time and a word for all. We had a nice chat about Notts County who he was Director of Football of at the time and he expressed sincerely, how keen he was to get his team winning. He was a man well met.

At that time he had committed in ignorance to what became one of the great sporting scams of all time, the Munto Finance affair at Notts County which at times read like scenes from a James Bond movie. Non-existent money brought into a club at the foot of the fourth tier, Sven, Sol Campbell, Kaspar Schmeichel and others arrived at the club. Incredible names such as Christian Vieri and Patrick Vieira, Dietmar Hamann, David Beckham and Roberto Carlos and even the recently retired Pavel Nedved and Luís Figo were all linked with the lowly club. There were persistent stories about Roberto Mancini coming to manage the club.

There is a fantastic serialised BBC radio series about the affair, well worth a listen: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0bq3935
.
The recent documentary on him was highly poignant I felt, particularly his message at the end which he gave alone. He showed that he was facing his illness with great and admirable stoicism and courage. I couldn't say much positive about some of the press who hounded him all those years for a few bucks. Their 'job' I suppose. What was refreshing was his unwillingness to accept a hypocritical moralising tabloid press. Good for him.
I hope his last days were spent as peacefully as possible with his loved ones close to him.

Rest in Peace, Sven
