Now is probably a good time to settle for the definitive pronunciation of Bowie. It’s been a long time debate with fans of the rock star David, and you still hear both being used.

Where do you stand on the big debate?

Are you a “Boh-ee” (rhymes with Joey), or a “Bow-ee” (rhymes with Howie)?

Bow as in forward part of a boat.

Not Bow as used with arrows.

Correct - any other answer is WRONG.

Since Rod is long gone and having seen his photo this morning , seems like we have a new "Tache"

In Scotland it's usually Bowie while English people mostly say Booie

It's a Scottish name I'm sure so I think we're correct, sounds better too

Although I have heard it was originally pronounced almost like Boo-ie?

My Great Great Granny was a Bowie from Leith, I never met but there were some stories.

I've never heard anyone say boo-ie (and I live in England).

According to this the man himself pronounced it 'boh-ee': https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/magazinemonitor/2007/01/how_to_say_bowie.shtml

I've never heard it pronounced Boo-ie and I've lived and worked all over England for 35 years. :dunno:

No-one on the radio pronounces it like that either.

I know. I'm just helping desensitise all of us to the inevitable deluge of "Kieran" over the next lifetime.

This poll is why we aren't allowed nice things. If people don't know this you shouldn't even be allowed music, never mind football.

Is it not the Americans that pronounce it Boo ee after the guy who had the famous knife.

My memory is that he was Bough in the Starman and Space Oddity years. It was only when he hit it big in America that things changed to Bo. The Americans, after all, were used to the guy with the knife at the Alamo.

There was an interview with Paxman years ago, in which he was asked the question. DB's response was that, since the act was an invention of a character, it was up to the audience to decide for themselves. He then went on to contradict himself by saying he had imagined it as "the Scottish pronunciation, Bo." I found that strange as I've never heard of anyone Scottish with the name pronounce it that way.

A further clue was when his son, Duncan (Jones, the film director) was born, his nickname was Zowie. I can't see why they would pronouce his name as Zoe...... although Dave and Angie did like to mess with genders :greengrin

FTR, Kieron is definitely Bough-ie. (and not in a Frank way.....)

That really grinds my gears as well.

It would probably be a good nickname for Celtic though.

That's just ridiculous, sorry. It's definitely Bowie. Pronounced Bowie. Don't know why folk have a problem with this. 😀

You'd think after the Great Latapy Pronunciation War we'd have learned to get names right.
