Nice to see the current priests at St Patrick’s post this on their Facebook page 💚

Founders Very Rev. Edward Joseph Canon Hannan, Parish Priest of St Patrick's, was the first president of the club and his parishioner, Michael Whelahan its first team captain - they met on the feastday of the Transfiguration at St Mary's Street Parish Hall, the Catholic Institute, and made history this day 149 years ago. Canon Hannan insisted that all players were faithful to their Sunday Mass obligation, and were members of the Temperance Society (teetotal). Hibs raised a great deal of money for the parish in its early years, playing extra matches to meet the church costs on so many good projects for the salvation of souls and the material improvement of Little Ireland. We are pleased to maintain that relationship, and share with you the recent significant donation by Hibernian Football Club to the church's 250th anniversary celebrations for this coming October 9th.

The point of the church being 250 this year, and Hibs making a ‘significant’ donation to the celebrations is a nice wee point. I know the church is quite cash strapped atm, so it’s nice someone at Hibs remembers where we came from.

I would have had little faith in the club's current custodians honouring their roots like that. Well done Hibs.

So we are in our 150th Year?Yup, looks like the club looking for some input.

Hibernian Football Club today turns 149 years old.

Today also marks one year until our 150th celebrations begin.

The 2025/26 campaign will mark a historic milestone for the Club and we have now commenced our official one-year countdown to our 150th Anniversary celebration.

The Club are currently working hard to ensure a fitting celebration is created that respects our rich history, honours our cultural heritage and continues to build the Hibernian Football Club legacy.

To understand what fans would like celebrated by the Club for our 150th Anniversary, fan surveys will be made available shortly to contribute ideas to help sculpt this landmark occasion.

Supporters can find out more information and how to get involved via the link below.

That's a nice touch from both the Priests and the club.

There was a Mass to honour Canon Hannan last year that was fairly well attended by Hibs fans (thinking back it may even have been the year before last). His grave is in the Grange Cemetry and was restored by the Historical Trust a few years back, well worth a visit and it would be nice if the laying of a wreath or similar played a part in the anniversary year.

It would be good if the club and the church could work together to offer a Mass or even an ecumenical service as part of the celebrations. I can understand why that would be tricky or uncomfortable for some but as part of a wider series of events it would be one people could choose to attend or not.

Certainly seems to be a desire from both sides for St Patrick’s to be involved.

Happy 149th Birthday, Hibernian.
Nice to know there's good relations between the Club and St. Patrick's. It's a beautiful church, and well worth a visit for anyone interested.
I've been going on about getting a plaque on the exterior of the former St. Mary's Street Halls to commemorate the founding of the club on this day in 1875. I'd like to think this would be part of the plans being prepared for our 150th celebration.
God bless the Hibs.

Am I right in thinking Pat Stanton and Rod Petrie unveiled a plaque at St Patricks a few years back acknowledging it's part in the club's history? I have vague memories of such an event but could just be totally making it up. I agree a plaque at St Mary's Halls would be a fitting thing to do for a major anniversary.

I've always thought there is scope for someone to devise a self guided walking tour charting the history of the club and maybe self publish it so people could follow it at their leisure. St Patricks, St Mary's Street, The Meadows, Powderhall, the site of the old Hibernian Park, Easter Road and so on.

You're right PB. The plaque was unveiled by Pat Stanton after a celebration Mass on St. Patrick's Day 2013 to commemorate the founding of the Club in the parish.
A lot of Hibs fans were in attendance, and manager at the time, Pat Fenlon, with Rob Petrie and other directors there too.

I like your idea of a Hibernian walking tour of Little Ireland and places nearby connected to the Club. That area of the old town is rich in Hibernian history.

I went recently, and the church is pretty stunning these days. The new priests I’m led to believe are from a pretty traditional order, so brought a lot of relics and furniture for the place.

Although, when I went they made a big point about parish finances, and problems with the roof not being properly cared for for 100 years, so it’s crumbling, so I’m sure they’re delighted with Hibs for making a donation for it’s 250th anniversary.

The Hibs plaque still sits proudly at the main door.

I could honestly weep every time this comes up. Our first strip was a plain white jersey with a Harp for a badge. We wore the hooped strip for a season, ma and celtic have worn them for decades. They are a celtic strip and we would look like a complete laughing stock to wear them for our 150th year just because some folk want a giruy to celtic.

You sure we only wore them for one season?

I thought it was 1876-79.

Either way you're right, our first kit is the one you mentioned. Celtic own the Hoops and frankly as far as I'm concerned they're welcome to them.

From memory, I think it was white top, then hooped top for 2nd year and then green jerseys from year 3 until we put white sleeves on

Was 1876 to 1879. Celtic didnt pick the hoops up until 1902 ish. So to be fair they didnt exactly steal it. They played in green and white stripes for a decade or so before adopting hoops. Their first strip was a white shirt like ours was.

Celtic's 125th anniversary top in 2013 was well done and paid homage to their first kit:

https://sport-locker.net/2012/09/25/football-kit-release-celtic-launch-125th-anniversary-nike-kit/

If Hibs done something similar with a white top and a harp badge with no sponsor or a disguised sponsor then I'd be pretty happy. I'd love us to wear it all season as the main kit. Hearts last season and Celtic with the top linked above only wore it sporadically which I think detracts from it. A celebration kit should be worn as the main kit for the season it pays homage to.

I didnt mean it was our first strip.
But those cheats and copycats stole most of our team back in 1888 and now brag about the hoops nonsense without knowing the real history of our club.nuff said GGTH 💚💚💚

you would like to think the club would do a specific questionnaire to the fans on what the strip could be. My worry is in their boardroom bubble they actually think that doing the hoops is a good idea, the fans must be consulted on this matter.

The only reason anyone would want to see a hooped shirt reintroduced for anniversary would simply be to noise up Celtic and their fans rather than for commemorative reasons.

The shirt was worn for a couple of seasons before being discarded and never worn again. It’s a Celtic shirt now, they maybe copied the style, but ultimately embraced it as their own and even as a Hibs fan looking at the grainy image of our hooped kit it’s impossible to do so without thinking “Celtic”.

If we were to unveil that next season we’d be the laughing stock of Scotland. I doubt very much we’ll be making any such howlers with the commemorative strip.
