View Full Version : David Gray's targets for this season
One Day Soon

We had quite a lot of discussion about Nick Montgomery's targets last season. Has there been any information on David Gray's targets or ambitions for this season from either he manager or the club?

This is what Gray thinks:
The players were made aware on day one that when we’re goal-setting for the season, we need realistic targets – and that’s exactly what it is. Every expectation on this Hibs team has to be to try to win a trophy and to finish in a European position. That’s the ultimate aim, from the start.

I’m sure in his first interview Gray, himself, said the target should always be European places in the league and a trophy. From memory, he wasn’t sitting on the fence trying to lower expectations or anything like that.

I like that. Montgomery lowered the bar by saying the target was top 6.

Give us some pride back and compete in every match.I don't think that short term targets should be of any interest to the owners - I'd tell him to stay in the division for two years but show that in the third season we will win a cup and challange the OF. Ask him what he needs to be able to do that.

If we are going to challenge Celtic after 3 seasons he needs a ****ing miracle or Foley to go mad and open his wallet in a serious way.

A hungry goalscoring striker would transform our season, and I'm sure SDG & MM are well aware.
Fwiw I'm impressed so far with the centre back acquisitions, keeper looks good on paper (not his fault he's hardly been tested yet) and the boss is playing players like Newell Boyle & NMW in their best positions.
Up top is the main concern for me, for starting xi
And the bench (LB in particular) isn't great but the starting XI with a hungry no9 looks decent

No one is challenging the OF. This season we need to show considerable improvement on last, IE better performances and better points total. A couple of big results would help get fans back on board. Challenging for European places also. If we have a decent season and Gray is doing well then we can be challenging for top 3/4 going forward. That'll do for me.

We hope not - Rangers are in an absolutely dire situation and Hearts have stability, strong squad (for our league) and finished MILES ahead of the rest in 3rd.
No one is “Challenging OF” but that mob could split them this year

This
Every season should be aimed at Europe and some silverware .. no different to most clubs in our league.. but winning, winning ugly and an effort every week I’d happily take regardless if there is a trophy at the end of it
Ever got a bigger job than most this season but think we’ll
Be fine

Short term - steady the ship, top 6 & decent cup runs
Med term - get rid of the dross and bring in better quality (combination of transfers/academy graduates), whether that's the two windows this season, or more likely next season and onwards
Longer term - more consistency, continuity, regular Euro qualification, semis and finals in the cups

You're forgetting the extra men that Rangers field in every game. The referees, assistant referees and VAR. That must be worth a lot of points.

I refuse to believe that the OF are going to win everything for the rest of time. It's sport - miracles do happen.Stop sacking managers, stop filling the team with loan players and invest in a long term plan - who knows where that may lead.

The target for me is to play attacking football, score plenty goals and get people excited about watching the team again.
Do that and the league table will take care of itself.

Fresh off a 3-0 pumping from Fleetwoord...splitting the old firm.

Challenge the old firm? It'll never happen without someone pouring tens of millions in to a club and that just isn't going to happen in Scotland.

European place finish.
Cup semi final.
Beat Hearts twice.
Anything less is an acceptance of mediocrity.

I just want to see clear signs of forward progress. Not having to do mental gymnastics to try and pretend it's 'almost there' or 'going to click any day now'.
The mess the squad is in and the difficulty in trading players because of that means I'm not overly bothered about league position this season, obviously if we are sitting 10th/11th in March that changes, but generally speaking it's not something I am going to use as a stick to beat Gray with. If I can see a clear vision for how we are trying to play and there is obvious progress and indicators that if/when we can get better players in next summer that it will see tangible success then I'll be fairly happy. A genuine season of transition if you like rather than that phrase being used as an excuse for another ***** season with no obvious direction or plan.
There is really no excuse in this league for not being competitive in every game. Being organised and working hard will take you pretty far in Scotland. That's true even against Celtic and Rangers; aye they can still batter you but we have been like scared wee boys against them in recent years, particularly the latter. A bit of pride in the jersey and being aggressive in every game; do that and results largely take care of themselves.

Agreed, I'll be surprised if they finish within 15 points of the the stickies !
Hearts are n9thing special, they played in a league full of mince that made them look half decent.
Let's hope a few teams, ourselves included, can get the finger out and give them a challenge for 3rd this year.

My take exactly.
I’m quietly confident we could have a decent season IF we address the goal scorer situation.
Biggest problem then becomes squad depth, which I’d be happy to see addressed with young loans.

Last paragraph I agree with. Folk talk about the games against the big two being a write off these days. They shouldn’t be. Particularly at ER we were always capable of getting a result against them. Didn’t mean it would always happen but the players would raise their game and the crowd would do the same. A lot of the games against them recently there has just been a total acceptance both on the pitch and in the stand. Time to change that. If we get a level of belief back where we go in to those games at least looking like a team, the rest will take care of itself.

Grays targets should be pushing for 3rd spot and a good cup run, after last season 4th or 5th would be acceptable imo too .
I still the squad is weak and we need another 3/4 signings to gave us a fighting chance of this though.

I’m in agreement. 3rd always the target but given where we are I’d take top 5 right now.
