Smoker / Sportsman’s Dinner

I’m organising a Smoker for my mate’s testimonial - he’s played at both junior & League 2 level for his club. I’m looking for suggestions on any standout speakers who people would recommend. There’s obviously the usual circuit of ex players but we’re trying to think outside the box as well.

Any recommendations or advice on those to avoid would be much appreciated.

Tam Cowan is decent but he's expensive! Jim Leishman is also a very good speaker.

I was at one back in Spring and John Gahagan was the speaker - thought he was brilliant! Lots of great stories about his playing days with Motherwell etc - it was tailored to an audience of huns right enough (sadly) and he spoke about games vs Rangers/Rangers players a fair bit, but I think he's versatile enough that he'd entertain any Scottish sporting fan! He also wasn't horrendously crude/offensive. I'm no shrinking violet but some of these guys opt for offensive for the sake of it and it can ruin their sets IMO.

George McNeil and Jimmy Nichol did one I was at about 10 years ago. Both were really good

John Rowbotham is very good.

I was at a dinner last year and it was Frank McAvennie and Kevin Thomson and they bounced off each other surprisingly well.

Bill Leckie is quite good as well.

Finally for a non footballing one I saw Gordon Sherry years back and he was pretty funny. I have heard mixed reviews from others though so not sure if you need to catch him on a good night.

I know he’s not involved in football but Steve Davis (Snooker) is superb. I would imagine he would be out of the price range you want to pay though.

Leishman is very good. Better than John Gahagan for me. George Mcneil very good too.
