falls the day before we play St Johnstone on 14 September. I’d like to think the club will appropriately celebrate this for a true club legend.

That would be a fantastic 80th birthday gesture IMHO. The Stanton Stand has a certain ring to it.

If they don’t then I will be forced to place the entire board in the cumfy chair - with not one exception- the holy hand grenade and a small white rabbit might have to get thrown into the mix 🫢

Pat was only 18 when I first saw him play, it was obvious even then that he was something special. Along with Pat we also had other teenagers breaking into the team not much older than myself like Jimmy O’Rourke and Peter Cormack, all dyed in the wool Hibees. It was easy to feel an affinity with the team something that is sadly lacking now.
Happy birthday Pat and thanks for the memories.

Fantastic night at Easter Road this evening - well done to the Hibernian Historical Trust for making this happen, and for Cliff Pike for his expert hosting. Great to hear Pat’s stories - indeed I think I speak for the entire audience in saying that we could have sat there and listened to Pat all night! Happy Birthday Pat!

Lucky beggar. He’d have been 22 when I saw him play first. Too young for the Famous Five, missed Joe Baker first time round but privileged to see some wonderful players in that late 60’s and 70’s era. And they were all team players, not revelling on their own, individual importance. We’ve had some flashes since then but I’m not sure we’ll ever see the likes again of those wonderful sides.

I am lucky enough to have got to know Pat through being a member of Stanton branch for many years.
He used to train our pretty hopeless branch football team after which we would retire to the bar of the Seahaven Hotel, which he owned, and undo any good work at the bar.
Nowadays it would be impossible to have such a relationship with a player of his stature and I think what makes him even more special to so many of us is the fact that he always has time for everybody and never seems to tire of erses like me stopping him for a chat.
We are truly blessed to have him.

My earliest memory of Pat was in the late 60s, I was so enthralled by the way he ran. He seemed to glide effortlessly across the grass. He just oozed class and what a leader. The ideal football player and gentleman.
Thank you sir for being a big part of my Hibs journey and sharing you love of the club with us all.

Yes J we travelled everywhere to watch the team in those days and God was the best player on the park most days. Broke our hearts when he went to the lesser greens but it did help him get some medals that he really deserved!!

For an accomplished central defender you made an amazing career out of leading the charge from midfield. You were so light on your feet you seemed to glide down the slope like a figure skater.

An elegant cultured box to box midfielder that led by example exemplary at the back ( his preferred position Sweeper but we had Sloop John B ) and more than able to chip in with all types of goals left foot right foot and very good in the air with lots of headed goals
Best example would be to look at footage of the 1972 League Cup Final a goal and an assist The Stanton Final 0-7 at Tiny and many more over years on YouTube and sadly now mostly confined to the memory banks
A Hibernian legend Hibs through and through was related to our first Captain Michael Whelahan his Uncle Jimmy Hedren also played for Hibs

My dad passed away 4 years ago, but would have been 80 this year as well.
Remember him saying he played against Pat as a boy at youth level. He thought Pat was a Rolls Royce of a player. Calm, elegant and a leader on the park.

Great to see Pat lead out the teams today.
The young Hibs kids present today will be able to tell people when they are 80 that “believe it or not, I actually saw Pat Stanton out on the pitch at Easter Road”
Stanton will still be talked about with reverence long after we’re all gone - I’m sure of it.
