Who the hell thought that front page was a good idea?

https://x.com/ScotNational/status/1812015855384793095?t=govF37-IarDvLPgnVgjeBw&s=19

It's xenophobic, classist drivel. The absolute worst of punch down humour and exactly the kind of thing the English media would rightly be called out for. It's nothing to do with being 'easily offended' or a 'snowflake'; it's just an absolute shocker from them.

It's amazing that was passed up the chain through various decision makers and no one thought to pull it. It's interesting to note condemnation seems to be coming from across the spectrum of opinion when it comes to the constitutional question.

No matter your view on independence surely we all want a Scotland that is better than this? It's so lacking in self awareness and so tasteless it's unreal.

It's not tongue in cheek it's embarrassing from a paper that wants to be taken seriously, makes it look as credible as the Beano. They have some good writers, need a new editor by the looks of it

The National front page is embarrassing, it's does the Independent movement no favours. I mean no Scots ever go to Spain and drink beer and have a fried breakfast ever. Anyone ever seen the amount of Rangers and Celtic tops in Benidorm....

Stupid blurb. Scottish tourists in Spain do everything the English ones are accused of. Editorial team not doing their job.

Having seen stuff like this aimed at Scots from the Sun and Daily Mail for decades, it doesn't make it any better, we should aim to be better than this.

I think that is what has irked me the most about it.

We have been on the receiving end of that kind of puerile crap for years, the aim should be to rise above it.

No one here will be surprised that my politics lean heavily towards independence but I have never and will never buy the National. It is every bit as bad as the Sun, Record, Mail etc just a different side of the debate. The front page is a disgrace and I hope those condemning it will also reflect on how they reacted when Scottish politicians were being hung in cartoons

The Daily Mail for Indy supporters. I had high hopes for it and subscribed during its initial months. If civic nationalism is a thing it doesn’t exist on their pages, nothing but good old fashioned Nationalism there. Best ignored.

One that supported fascism in the 30s and openly supports racism and stereo types immigrants negatively over and over again. Whether in your view they are both dreadful the moral compass of both areimo not the same.

Good.

It's a fair apology that actually acknowledges their own error rather than straying into 'we apologise if anyone was offended' territory.

I knew you were going to come back with the Mail supporting fascism in the 30s and you didn’t disappoint. :greengrin
Neither newspaper adds anything to the debate, they both concentrate on maximising sales by telling the already converted what they want to hear. Poor journalism with no attempt to inform at all.
Just my opinion though.

Stairway 2 7

Both papers are similar that the are not impartial and preach to the converted. You can't trust either as they are more similar to a fanzine than a newspaper. Similarities end there as the mails output is abhorrent and dangerous unlike the national

Of course you did and that’s what’s makes them different imo. 😄 Never bought the national however it must be poor if it is on the same level as all the other tabloid rags in this country.

Interesting tweet and storyline from the Times today. A list of SNP exMPs withe the headline FiLTH. Failed in London Try Holyrood. I am yet to see the outpouring of disgust and condemnation. This in no way makes the National any better but just thought I'd point out the hypocrisy

Hey, I ain’t defending the Mail. My comment was meant in a light hearted way, it’s rare for the merits or otherwise of the Mail to be discussed without its support of Fascism in the 30s getting a mention.
I now expect someone to come back with, ‘So you think Facism is funny do you? ‘:greengrin

Found it and geez that is bad. Filth, (Failed in London Try Holyrood) a contrived acronym to try and justify it as well. That's from their Scottish Political editor. I disagree with that papers politics but they usually stay out of the gutter. Standards of debate have fallen badly everywhere over the past few years. Depressing to say the least.

That's really poor from the Times. To think it was once seen (by some) as an indispensable national resource, I suppose it's a symptom of the social media age.

Politics, political debate and political journalism really is in the sewer right now. Clickbait headlines and shock jock content; it's pitiful.

Politics, political debate and political journalism really is in the sewer right now. Clickbait headlines and shock jock content; it's pitiful. There's also the fact that a lot, most, of that media chattirati live and operate in lavish but miniscule London bubble. All the hot flushes, scandals, boosterism and dinner party intrigues of the last 14 years don't matter at all now. Every once in while they'll forget themselves and reveal their utter disregard of those outwith the bubble. A broadbrush look at their output during the last govt seemed to be pushing people towards some sort of inefable patriotism, while none of them are. (Of course they might see patriotism as owning flags, brown-nosing everyone above them in the social order they've invented and cheering over upward notches on a market graph, but that's them. )
