FFS - this is our "go-to" pub pre match. Often book a table and watch the early English game and have a scran. Child friendly too.

Wrong end of Easter Road for me, I'm always in The Percy but been in it a few times and is a nice wee boozer, always busy as others have said. Really hope another pub opens in its place.
I have a mate who works at Heineken and was involved in marketing these pub opportunities. Will see if he knows what might be coming in it's place.

Heineken already offering it up as another pub. Won’t be much change once they find new people to manage the place.

Sad times. Down to 5 pubs on ER. One hates football fans, one is the size of my kitchen and one is a total dump and been up for lease for a couple of years.
Another odd fact, The Mash Tun is the only ER pub not on a corner.

I think that's the case here. I live nearby and yes it's busy on match days, but there are only about 20 of those in the 365 days in a year. The rest of the time it's fairly quiet. Hopefully someone else takes it on and continues to show the football. Last thing we need is another hipster bar in Leith.

Not a pub I used often but sad to see it go all the same. Every pub that closes is a loss although arguably it's just a sign of changing habits. People drink less and are more inclined to do it in the house now.
The Iona is my usual haunt, child friendly and no frills but it's always rammed now, in part due to reduced options elsewhere, another pub closing probably exacerbates that.
As an aside I actually don't mind the Old Eastway Tap that is where the Four was. I have a natural aversion to pubs that turn their nose up at football fans but I was in at the end of last season. I don't wear colours to games but a few people in the group had polo shirts or a scarf on, we asked if they could get in and the manager said it was no bother. They just don't want big groups in singing before a derby, Rangers game etc. which I get. They have a regular clientele that isn't into that and it's asking for bother if you hack off your regulars 4 or 5 times a year when they keep the lights on day to day. Admittedly £6.75 for a Guinness is extracting the uring. Wouldn't be my first choice to go to but it was ok and we didn't feel unwelcome.

Think they had about 3 or 4 on. Innis & Gunn was their most 'mainstream'.
They had the Leith Pils from Moonwake which is decent and a German lager I have seen in a few places but can never remember the name.

The pub trade is dying a death.
It is being replaced by Groovy and Trendy.
Unless you have a unique idea which stands you out from every other pub on the same street, you're doomed.
Failing applying and campaigning for a smoking license, perhaps try liaising with a celebrity chef and get him/her to come up with the world's finest Cabbage and Ribs dish.
This will be your signature dish, and hopefully will be as famous in the Hibs community as Betty's Hot Pot.
If you don't have the face of a celebrity to advertise your signature dish, along with a killer slogan (Thinking of something along the lines of a world strongman. If only Eddie Hall was a Hibee). Don't bother.

Going to swim against the tide here. Yes, I welcomed those old rat traps in my youth but we should be upmarket support with standards. Leave the mindless sneers at ‘wine bars’ and ‘hipster joints’ to our flat earth fiends across the city in Gorgie. And I’m all for higher prices and bans on garish football colours if it helps keep the riff-raff at bay.

Big companies like Heineken are the problem. They don't care for local community or tennents of pub. They just want a high rental and their beer on sale. They win no matter the people they squeeze

A nice pub but the price of good beer was getting desperate.
The owner has two other pubs up the Southside - Greenmantle and Meadows Tap. Perhaps there wasn't enough footfall down Easter Road outside of the fitbaw.
It's getting worrying for local pubs now. Anything in the middle of Easter Road doesn't stand a chance unless it goes down the craft beer scene. Iona and Tamson's flying the flag whilst the Percy thrives on being down the bottom end.
The Strathie on Iona Street is one of the best remaining boozers

Strathie has been gentrified no. It was a class wee dive 3 years ago. Now all the original fittings ripped out and replaced with bare stone, the basic beer has been upgraded to craft choices, dart board taken away and poetry nights added, clientele very different too.
Nothing wrong with any off that I like both versions of the pub. I notice its busier during the week than it was which is the only sustainable option. The increase number of females is a huge plus of the new pubs, the old boozers just weren't welcoming for young girls to go in for a few drinks and something to eat after work

Have not been back in Scotland on a visit for 8 years and it was a always a stop off on the way back from a game, to my sisters place in Pirniefield.
Pub's like that, the Marksman, Gillies's, Bowlers Rest were usually my go to pubs for a before match drink. A bit away from ER, so not so crowded, though all small enough to fill up quick when a gaggle of guys came in.

Out of curiosity, is the bottom shop still open?
Have not been back in Scotland on a visit for 8 years and it was a always a stop off on the way back from a game, to my sisters place in Pirniefield.
Pub's like that, the Marksman, Gillies's, Bowlers Rest were usually my go to pubs for a before match drink. A bit away from ER, so not so crowded, though all small enough to fill up quick when a gaggle of guys came in.
But my memory fades, they were probably busier than I remember as I have only been to a very few games live over the last 30 years.
Yes bottom shop is still open and still a good wee pub...same with bowlers rest. Marksman still open too but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone these days....it's a bit eh rough.

Ian Gordon was holding court in Nauticus on Duke Street post match yesterday.
Not quite a sophisticated wine bar but they serve a brilliant Old Fashioned and you can rub shoulders with the movers and shakers.
I was in the Nauticus later on (about 9 till closing) cant vouch for IG being in there but was the first time Ive been in and was quite impressed.

It's really nice. It's not been an easy site to make work but they have been around for a while now.
One of the founders was also behind Panda & Sons who have won just about every bar award going and the other has been in the trade for years at some good sites so no surprise they are doing well.

Cracking Whisky selection and beers from local brewers Pilot and Newbarns. Both from Leith I believe.

We were in the Mash Tun briefly pre-match but it seemed a bit of a work in progress, tellies were all gone so we couldn’t watch the early EPL game so we headed down to the Persevere instead. Not sure if they’re putting new TVs in, but if they’re not intending on showing any live sport they’ll struggle IMO.

Dunno - I thought I’d read it was to close in an article in the EEN/Scotdmans
This is standard and very deliberately misleading reporting from the EEN which they do all the time.
"Much loved boozer" to close gets the sympathy vote, the clicks on the website and keeps a story going for a good few days as the memories flood in and everyone remembers the good old days.
They just ran their standard playbook template story about the "closure" of Clarks Bar in Dundas Street and kept that going over the weekend when in fact one phone call to the brewery would have confirmed its just a change of tenancy.
The previous tenants got a huge pay off from a "last ever" chance so everyone is winner except the dafties that read the EEN.
