Who checks copy these days

just read this article - is it Hibs / Beeb etc who are responsible?... how many mistakes can you spot in it  I would expect someone doing standard grade English to do better

Marvin Ekpiteta says the "history" of Hibs was a big selling point after the defender signed a three-year contract at Easter Road.
The 28-year-old centre back was most recently with Blackpool, making over 100 appearances for the Bloomfield Road outfit.
Conversations were sporting director Malky Mackay were key to making the deal happen, according to Ekpiteta.
"There was a bit of initial interest at first, then my agents spoke to Malky and it progressed quite nicely," he said.
"I liked everything that I heard about the club and I liked what I have seen so far, so it’s definitely a good move for me.
"I have really enjoyed my career so far. I have come all the way up from non-league to the Championship down south, now I am up in the Scotland and I feel my whole career I have been on an upward trajectory.
"The history (of the club) was a bit thing for me and to play at this level against some really good teams was a big thing for me.
"It’s something different for me, a new challenge that I am looking forward to."

Are you counting those that are quotes where he may have spoken those words. Mind you hard to know what are quotes given the random nature of where the quotation marks are.

Four i think. I think we’ve all started relying on podcasts for content now.

Why "history"? Hibs have a history and if that's what encouraged him to sign them that's how it is.

Lots of other teams have histories as well. That's what happens when you've been around for a bit.

He has passed the real person test.

Obviously not using chat bots, wikipedia, spell checkers or google.

But let's face facts, if he did, he could do it just as good as any monkey.

There have been similar threads before . Today`s article is actually fairly correct compared with many over recent years . I`ve assumed that whoever has done webpage articles in the last four or five years is not a native speaker of English . What I find annoying / strange is constant use of exclamation marks . Hibs have signed ----- + exclamation mark. New date for golf day + exclamation mark . Messi signs for Hibs + exclamation mark . Hospitality on your birthday + exclamation mark . Maybe no great deal especially if only for a few days or weeks but this has been going on for a few years now and noone has corrected it .

I agree that grammar can say a lot about a person, and language should be respected.

However sometimes imperfect grammar does not suggest what others think it suggests.

It could suggest that they are very busy and have a lot to juggle and simply do not have the time to take five minutes per sentence. Time is money. Family is also important and children running about are even more important and should not be neglected. They possibly type in the same manner that they would hold a face to face real-time conversation. It does not necessarily mean laziness, disrespect or illiteracy.

I mean, who in a real time converation goes back to correct their errs and umms every second? But we do all make errors when talking? Right?

I am however becoming concerned about humanities recent inability to get the "gist" of things, without needing it spelling out.

I knew Compare would come in handy again at some point. 😉

It's poorly written and doesn't even looked to have been edited. If it is from the official website it wouldn't reflect well on Hibs but I'm not sure where it's been taken from?

It looks very unprofessional. You'd expect a company website to have decent graphic design, layout, etc so the same goes for the writing of articles. Presumably people are paid to do this so "not having enough time" is not an excuse.

I should have said it was lifted from Beeb. Whats making me laugh is that it looks like those who have responded are all 45+ :greengrin that in itself tells a story.

While I am in no way part of the punctuation police, as I did not make it past basic training , surely published articles can avoid 3 basic errors by a simple proof read?

:greengrin indeed. But that is a technology fart rather than proof reading error. And in my defence, I am a random internet poster not someone to purports to earn a living writing :aok:

But at least they didn't use grave accents (`) instead of apostrophes ('), insert rogue spaces before full stops and misspell "no one" as "noone".

Just to lighten the thread (which was aimed at those providing print for a living, and being a bit tardy)

A quick proof read of this sign before printing it up could have prevented Children and the Elderly being treated less favourably than a garden
