The ANCIENT ORDER OF HIBERNIANS is an Irish and Irish-American organization that traces its roots back to the organization of the Defenders in Ireland in 1565 to protect Roman Catholic priests (see CATHOLICS, ROMAN (https://case.edu/ech/articles/c/catholics-roman/)) and the Church against English persecution.

Hibernian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernian_F.C.), one of the most prominent clubs in Scottish football (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_football), was founded in 1875.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Hibernian_F.C.#cite_note-formation-1) The club was named in honour of the Roman name for Ireland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernia) and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Order_of_Hibernians)

Beyond Wikipedia saying so, where is the proof that Hibernian are named Hbernian than for any other reason than that the word Hibernian sounded glorious and was once the Roman name for Ireland?

Was Edward Jospeh Hannan a member of this secret society?

I wonder when and by whom that wiki entry was amended to include the inaccurate statement?

History is exactly that and we all know how we, as a club were founded, however we are a Scottish club, playing at Easter Road, in the Scottish Premier league.

The answer is easy mate. There is no evidence, absolutely none, that the ancient order of Hibernians was anywhere in the thinking when the club was named. Unless you count some person / persons around a hundred years after anybody involved in the founding of the club was dead making a presumption that it was .... and in one account I read actually saying Michael Whelahan went to the chapel to pray for inspiration 'and it was there he remembered the ancient order of Hibernians'

The evidence showing that actually happened is literally non existent. That's not to say he didn't know of the organisation, but that in no way proves it was in his, or anybody else's, mind when the club was named.

Why do you feel the need to emphasise that ? we know we are a Scottish club with Irish roots, we don't need it constantly spelt out by certain folk on here that like to ignore our roots, we should be proud of them !

I spell it out in bold to emphasise that we are a Scottish club, playing in the Scottish league, born in the cowgate of Edinburgh. We may have Irish roots but thats in the past, we are not Irish, we should be proud of what we are as a club, being formed from Irish immigrants does not make me proud, its in the same context as being owned by Americans, it does not make our club American.

Anyway that is only my opinion GGTTH.

I totally respect your opinion mate, and anyone else's on this sensitive topic (and it is sensitive, practically every conversation or thread on this issue ends up in an argument).

In my opinion its not the same as the American ownership or even close to it. Owners come and go. Who knows, in another year or two we might not be owned by Americans.

The Irish roots are permanent. They will always be there for as long as we are Hibernian FC. I think the club have the balance spot on now, with the name, the colours, the badge, the harp, the thistle etc. Scottish club with Irish roots. Now and always.
