One of the things I suppose we all wish is that we had got more money for an outstanding player like SJM though with his contract status I think we did get the best possible deal available even though he was an absolute bargain at that sort of money.
I remember over here at the time when it looked like he was going to parkhead apart from a few friends who support them that were alright .
I had alot who were so sure he was going there that aimed chants my way of " we've got mcginn " or told me how we were their favourite feeder club etc ...
They can say what they want about it like what I read below on Celtic quick news though they made a complete dogs dinner of the whole thing from their point of view and were left with egg on their faces in the end .
https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/revealed-celtic-and-john-mcginn-the-truth/
Something I enjoyed coming back at them about though I did get " we didn't really want him anyway " and " he wasn't really good enough anyhow " . 😂

And that infamous Tom English tweet
Absolutely delighted it didn't come to anything. He's made a packet and improved exponentially by playing with and against the best players in the world every week
Deserves every bit of success that comes his way. My favourite ever Hibs player

Given his subsequent non transfer I wish we had put a clause in his contract guaranteeing us a million quid for every season he played more than 20 games for them in the EPL.

He has absolutely shafted Hibs by being so likeable, and becoming JUST the right quality for the club he's at and the role he plays.
Thanks for nothing.

I still believe this failed transfer cost Celtic their 10 in a row. Not only did they miss out on a player of McGinn’s quality but I’m convinced this saga was what convinced Rogers to move on when the chance came. He was apparently furious with the club for ballsing up what should have been a very easy deal.

I was told that as well , Rodgers wasn't best pleased over their efforts to sign SJM and that it had a bearing on his decision to move when the chance came .
Wasn't it something like 3 offers we rejected from them ? . When all they really had to to do is go in with a decent offer that was acceptable and they'd probably have got him .
Thankfully in this case there penny pinching attempts got them nowhere.

Favourite ever Hibs player.
Special footballer.
Special personality.
Drove us to the 2016 Scottish Cup and 2017 promotion.
Played out his skin for us until the very end and scored the tie-winning goal against Asteras Tripolis in Greece.
Made us a wad of cash.
Now a Scotland legend so we can keep enjoying his play.

While I enjoyed watching him play for us and I'm happy that he found a home at Villa and is no doubt set for life. I am still a bit pissed off he never made the move for the megabucks that would have given us the windfall that would have compensated the club properly.

Probably hurt us as well. Celtic would have sold him by now and we would have got the sell on.

That's like saying Avram Grant wanted Chelsea to sign him. He's had no say in affairs for over a decade. Who Ferguson wants United to sign is irrelevant.
Mcginn would probably be good for united. He's never come close to leaving Villa, though.

It was Peter Lawwell the Celtic director (not sure of his actual title)who said that. Absolutely hilarious way to go about your business, try to tell the selling club how much their player is(n't) worth, in public! They tried the same thing when chasing Ivan Toney. Cheapskates.

My favourite player of all time was John Collins.
However I always resented the fact that he ended up playing for the manky mob and like most players that end up at the Old Firm, for some reason they become Old Firm supporters 😏🤮
I’ve never been so happy to hear that John McGinn was going to Villa.
I loved watching him for the short time that I did. A proper player in the heart of our midfield.
Not only that every time I see him getting interviewed he talks about his time here and obviously winning the cup was his greatest moment in his career so far.

Grants standing at chelsea is no where near comparable to SAF at United.
He's still a massive influence at United.
United were monitoring and very close to making attempts, right up until mcginns new contract.

Were united ever going to pay what he was worth to Villa? Very unlikely imo. There's a lot between watching a player and actually doing a deal.

Everywhere mcginn goes there’s a level of achievement and a ceiling he keeps crashing through. Might be his style ,the fact he’s Scottish or his athletic attributes not looking like an elite athlete by size or shape. But I reckon that snobbery has robbed one of the best midfielders I’ve ever seen get a shot at an elite club. He would’ve ruled serie a thrived at Man Utd or Liverpool. To list his achievements at the clubs he’s played for is nothing short of phenomenal.
I remember listing to a Jack Grelish interview a few years back and he said if McGinn hadn't signed for Villa they would not have got promoted. He said that he changed the whole dressing room, the players attitudes and they became a 'team' because of him..

I have no doubt villa gave him the new contract to try and end interest, as I said that came at a time when things changed at United too and it was probably just bad timing for Mcginn. He was obviously taking the new deal as we all would in his shoes.
He'd have been superb for either united or Liverpool. I got laughed at for saying so when he left hibs.
I feel he'll now not move higher than villa. Unlucky for hibs cos the original deal was ****.

I dunno. He has been excellent under Emery, but was poor under Gerrard and okay under Smith.
I think there was always better midfielders available for less money. If a big side had wanted him, they'd have bid and got it done. Was never more than rumours.

By dragging villa? Luiz, Watkins, Kamara, Martinez, Torres, Digne, Konsa and Carlos are all top quality internationals, who would get in 99% of teams. And Emery a top manager. Don't think Mcginn dragged villa to 4th.

No mcginn no champions league simple for me really. I could easily name Man Utd star players who’d get into 99% teams and yet doesn’t quite work that way for them. They don’t have a mcginn though do they?

Don't think you're being a little bias? Mcginn is not Villas best or most important player. Watkins season was absolutely insane. Without him they're maybe not even in Europe.
Man United squad is mostly pish tbh. Villas first 11 is certainly better, not because of Mcginn.

McGinn is an important player for Villa, he’s the captain and certainly a big part of their tone and culture, but it’s disingenuous to say he’s the sole or even primary reason they got into the champions league.
If a single man is responsible or most responsible, I’d suggest it’s the manager given his track record and Villa’s previous record before he joined

You’re right that he didn’t do it alone, but you’ve also consistently talked down McGinn’s qualities.
He’s not the most silky smooth player, but he’s also not captain of a team that finished top 4 in England by accident.
Undoubtedly an elite level midfielder.

He's a very good player. He certainly isn't the very top tier for midfielders, though. A retiring Toni Kross utterly ran things last night. That's an elite level midfielder imo.
Mcginn is brilliant, best midfielder I've seen at Hibs and I'm very proud of him. He's not a top 20 midfielder in the world, though. Guys like Kroos, Rodri, Odegaard, De Jong are a different tier. That's all I'm saying.

I said even when he was at Hibs he would have been a revelation in the Liverpool midfield at the time. He just has IT. The ability to galvanise an entire team just by being a sheer force of nature. Not the most technically gifted footballer but he has qualities that the majority of other players do not have.

I see what you’re saying in terms of elite level midfielders, McGinn isn’t in that bracket in terms of ability. But he’s arguably as important to Villa as what Kroos was to Madrid or what Odegaard is to Arsenal.

Kroos is different gravy, no argument there. He must be bored of football because there’s no obvious reason why he couldn’t continue playing for another few seasons.
The test for McGinn isn’t whether he can pass it like Toni tho. The test is whether he can make an impact at the top level - you can wait and see how he gets on in the champions league, but for me he has proved himself.
Maybe not a contender for a world 11, but absolutely a competitor at the highest level.
I’m not really disagreeing with you!
