In intensive care. Doesn't sound hopeful.

The Liverpool statement doesn't read well at all. Hopefully it's not as grave as it appears.

I never knew that we could of had him on a pro contract when he was starting out but opted to play golf instead!

Absolutely. I grew up listening to Alan Hansen's voice. He along with John Motson were the voices of football for me as a kid. Haven't watched MOTD for years now.
Best wishes Alan.

He was in his prime as a player when I was growing up. Very fine footballer.
Might be wrong but I seem to recall him being linked with Hibs in his younger days.

Not so sure about lawrenson but definitely agree on Hansen. Huge figure in British football over the last 40 years
Can only echo the well wishes

It amazed me when he admitted after retiring that he would be sick with nerves every time he went on telly. He always appeared so calm and composed. Enjoyed his punditry very much.

Just read that yesterday. Certainly wouldn’t have guessed it. That’s a lot to put yourself through for 20 odd years

Trained at Hibs under Turnbull and was offered a contract. Declined, saying he was focusing on his golf. Later signed for Partick and the rest is history.

He was the first player I ever experienced retiring as a player and then retiring from the career he had after his playing career.
Really hope he pulls through and gets better but it doesn't sound good.

It’s probably because of players like Hanson and the rest of the Scottish contingent like Dalglish, Souness, Nicol and Wark that is the reason I became a fan. They absolutely ruled England’s first Division back in the early Eighties.
I especially loved watching Liverpool play in Europe back then. There was just something special about those Red & White strips.
I really hope Hansen wins this battle 🙏

Agree Lawrenson was torture. Hansen a completely different level

I saw him play for Thistle when he was a gangly youth (and I was a wee laddie).
A fabulous and under appreciated player. How he only won 26 caps I don’t know. He played at a time when we had good players, but he was a long way ahead of miller and mcleish, albeit as a pair I get why they were chosen

I think (was very young at the time) from what I’ve read, there was a bit of friction between ‘Anglos’ and home based players at the time, which went some way to Hansen and others being overlooked a bit. As you say, Miller and McLeish as a club partnership factored in as well in Hansen’s case

Great player and wish him a full and speedy recovery
I think Jock Stein lost a wee bit of faith in him after the unfortunate coming together with Willie Miller versus Russia in the World Cup and I remember him being replaced at half time in the famous Charlie Nicholas game 2-2 versus Switzerland by Alex McLeish after conceding a soft goal to a free header at a corner kick in 1983
I think that was the start of the Aberdeen club partnership for Scotland

Willie Miller was talking about it on Sportsound a few weeks back, it was quite interesting. He's been a bit scathing about Hansen in the past - you get the impression there is little love lost there.
The way Miller described it - at Aberdeen he effectively played behind McLeish. Hansen preferred to play alongside a fellow centre back, so when it came to playing together, something had to budge, and they never really got the hang of how best to do this. It was easier and more effective to play the pairing who were so good for Aberdeen than to drop them both and find a partner for Hansen, hence arguably one of our best ever defenders earned a fairly derisory number of caps given his obvious quality and domestic success rate.

Good news! Looks to have recovered well.
Former Liverpool defender and long-time BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen has received his MBE for services to football and broadcasting.

Glad to see that he appears back to full health, IIRC it was looking pretty damn gloomy at the time. Well whatever it was that wrong with him back then he's looking like he has a few more years to go thankfully.

Agreed great to see “Jockey” looking fit and well. An absolute Rolls Royce of a player at Liverpool in his heyday.

Glad to hear he's doing well but still never forgiven him for getting us knocked out of the 1982 World Cup finals!
