Man City launch legal action against Premier League over financial rules - BBC Sport (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/crggez4w209o)

I used to like City, a club bursting with character.

They've turned into the absolute epitome of everything I hate about football though and this move pretty much sums them up.

I read this news today and I thought straight away "I hate Man City", the statement was absolutly shambolic.

It seems they will just tie everyone up in knots with money and legal debates throwing so much money at it.

Strip them of everything and punt them out the league, but they won't.

I feel sorry for the old school City fans.

It's just not their club anymore and whilst they must have enjoyed the success and rubbing their United mates noses in it over the last few years this surely can't be what they want from their club?

I think everyone should just sue each other and the teams with the most expensive lawyers win in the end and then there would be no more leagues and other teams and City and PSG would then merge into one team and they could just play against themselves every week.

Monopoly capitalism is great.

I wouldn't be sure of that. Not while they still see themselves as romantic rebels waging war against the 'establishment' clubs like United, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

Oh they absolutely will. If City could've made a deal, they wouldn't be doing this. If they couldve got away with a 20 point deduction or something they'd have taken it.

League 2 I'd imagine. The pressure from the actual big clubs is too much.

Whilst I have no real ill will towards City, it would be refreshing if they were found guilty of multiple charges to be jettisoned into League 2 or below and stripped off their titles.

All these rules in place seem to be easily avoided with a few loopholes.

It still angers me to this day how lightly the old Rangers were treated. Our own governing body were keen for them to remain as high up the pyramid as possible to ensure the blue pound remained strong. Cheating is cheating and cheats should be dealt with an iron fist.

Day to day I can’t say I ever think about the Man City owners when watching Man City or who they sign. I think of Man City as just another super rich club, like Man U, Barcelona, Real Madrid etc. Who spend obscene amounts putting squads together. With Man City and Real spending their money better than most.

There’s an interesting debate to be had about sports washing, however I’d suspect most people don’t give the Man City owners a second thought when it comes to Halland, Pep, trebles etc. Far less have a more positive opinion on the owners than they previously did because they’ve spent well and brought success. I suppose there is an element of normalising in simply equating their name with Man City’s success. Although most folk will an also be more aware of their crimes and behaviour directly as a result of being in the Man City spotlight than before they were owners, that’s certainly the case for myself.

Isn't what City have done, in terms of spending huge sums of money, essentially the same thing that Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Arsenal and Madrid, Barca etc have done in the past? It's just now there are different rules/regulations and everything is of course inflated compared to the 90's/00's etc. Not sure I've made my point.

Other clubs have spent ridiculous amounts of money to build squads too and found ways to circumvent rules at that time point by investing.

No. It's nothing to do with the amount of money. It's making up fake sponsors that lead back to their owners, that enable them to spend more. It's cheating.

It's a lot easier to spend well when you do not publish accurate accounts. You genuinely think Haaland was 60 million and 300k a week? No chance. They literally bought Peps brother a club to keep him happy.

Spending well “on paper” - they’ve been manipulating their figures for years. Pep has spent around a billion pounds since he went there, and that without looking under the surface like the Haaland deal you’ve highlighted. That’s not spending well, that’s just throwing money about - want a centre back? Let’s sign 3, all over 50m each. Over 100 on right backs. 300 million on wingers. 100 million on Grealish, 50m on kalvin Phillips.

Any given deal doesn’t really stand out much, but the sheer volume of them

Cant blame them, they have had this charge hanging over them for a while now, which tarnishes their reputation ( irrespective of whether or not the charges are sound), so I guess it’s a fingers up to the EPL, piss in the pot, or move on……

Is this not completely seperate to the charges they are going through? Pretty sure I heard that on Talksport.

I think this is City claiming something along the lines of Gulf states being discriminated against and the charges are related to FFP.

Not that I'm defending City at all btw. As has been mentioned they seem a soulless corporate entity.

I’m not sure you can argue they haven’t spent well. I can’t remember if it’s over the last 10 years or during Pep’s tenure but Man U have spent more than City. Man U, Chelsea and at the other end of the market, Hibs, all show that money alone doesn’t buy success. How you spend it is as important as how much you spend.

Agreed.

On the whole they've spent well, they simply wouldn't have won 4 Premier League titles in a row plus the Champions League if they hadn't.

This 💯 - compare the widespread uproar in England to the way it was kept relatively quiet by our spineless and compliant media here in Scotland and our footballing authorities. Biggest sporting scandal ever in Scotland and even now, the Huns and The Rangers play the ‘victim’ card.

The Man City chairman was quoted today as being frustrated by the constant references to the charges.

If only they'd co-operated with the enquiry then half the charges wouldn't exist and it would all have long since blown over. Can't think why they preferred to obstruct instead ...

Also on that note , we are owned by Americans and in America they are some states who have repealed the laws which give the women the control over their own reproductive rights and have worrying archaic views on towards LGBT+ communities with some of these states removing rights for the LGBT community.

A lot of city fans seem to think they're entitled to sympathy from the public because they watched their team in the third tier in the 90s. Or something.
