View Full Version : Mackay - what should be his top 3 priorities?
My Three:-
Set the philosophy and playing style and bring in a Head Coach and players to fit that model?
Work with Brian to restructure the playing squad - How many windows will it need, when should they let the Head Coach have an input?
Coach the Head Coach - Make us hard to beat, turn a result around by changing tactics when somethings not working, manage the last 10 minutes to hold a lead?
What would yours be?

Same as Turnbull spine of the team a very good goalie ( Herriot ) creative midfielder ( Edwards ) striker ( Gordon)
Oh and a centre half ( Stewart ) and a few utility players that can play midfield and full back ( Smith Bremner and Munro ) not forgetting Spalding as cover at centre back
If we could get Maolida to stay that would be a start

1. Tell Ian Gordon to stay out of the way
2. Tell Ben Kensell to stay out of the way
3. Keep his phone in his pocket

If he is doing his job properly he will be meeting with his fellow directors to understand the finances available for the season ahead.
Did you watch his interview of Hibs YouTube channel? :greengrin

He has Director in his title but he’s not on the Board.

1. Sort the first team out - Head Coach and Recruitment for the season ahead
2. See 1.
3. See 2.
He needs to do that to get the time to do everything else without feeling like he's putting out fires. In all seriousness, once he's done what he can for the first point, he really needs to take a good look at the structure of the football operations and start really interrogating whether or not we have the right people in the right places across the various departments.
I hope he's going in with a view to making significant changes and not just to pick up a wage to keep things ticking over (there's nothing to suggest that would be the case), because we need someone strong enough to lay down a football strategy and make sure we see it through, however difficult it is.

You wouldn't expect him to be appointed to the Board after one day in the job.
I worked in IT and we had four IT directors, not one of which were ever invited to serve on the board. Non-statutory Directors rather than Company Directors IIRC.

If it was a Board position then yes I’d expect him to be appointed to the Board on day one.
The way you referred to him talking to his fellow Directors made it sound like you were inferring he was on the Board.

I get you. No, I wasn't inferring that at all TH.
I was quoting directly from his first interview where he explained who he expects to be working with on a weekly basis.
The interview gives an insight into his role and explains why we are reverting back from a manager job to a Head Coach with a focus on touchline tactics, training pitch skills and leadership.
Well worth another listen for us IMO

Nick Montgomery was also Head Coach. Maloney and Johnson were managers, Jack Ross was a Head Coach. I haven't looked back further, but in terms of the next appointment, that's a continuation of approach rather than a new one.
Edit - Hecky and Lennon were both Head Coach as well.

I think one of the top priorities has to be backing the manager to clear players out. Stating the obvious perhaps but we likely need to make some tough calls and recognise that spending money to pay people off, is probably worthwhile in terms of building a good team environment/spirit.
If for example Gray says he sees no place for the likes of JDH, Jair, McKirdy.... Mackay needs to get them out by any means necessary, including reaching a settlement with them to go.
I get the impression that Monty was told he needed to work with the likes of Rocky and Jair and develop them given the money invested in them. Not an unreasonable request but if Gray takes over, they need to back him to work with the squad he wants.

Good points TD
As a coach who knows the playing squad, David will be able to give Malky a thorough inventory of the players. But surely the main (if not previously rather invisible) man is Brian McDermott?
If we recruit a Head Coach who doesn't know the league or the players, the earliest he will be able to contribute will be the January window.

I hope that Malky gets a better handle on a recruitment strategy than we've seen under McDermott. If rumours are to be believed, we signed ALF at whatever age he was last summer with a clause for another year if he met a certain number of appearances, only to back out of that clause because we wanted to lower the age of the squad.
Surely the DoF would have known a)what age profile we wanted in the first team and b)how old ALF is, when we put that contract in front of him. A prime example of either having no strategy, or taking actions that don't align with what you're trying to achieve.

Documenting what our plan is and what everyones role is would be a great start.

Our problems all stem from a lazy midfield that is slow in possession and timid/weak/stand-offish when out of possession
They don't protect the defence and they rarely create chances for the forwards.
I'd say top 3 priorities are
1) Sell Joe Newell (as there would be takers)
2) Ship out as many as possible of Euan Henderson, JDH, Josh Campbell, Tavares, Levitt, Delferriere, Reuben MacAllister, McKirdy & Lewis Miller - may get fees for some
3) Target athletic players with good attitude to complement Nathan Moriah-Welsh (Lennon Miller, Luke McCowan)
And with that, you'll see a huge uptick on & off the field
That's the job

I doubt getting rid of one of our best players will make top of the list. Yes, we can improve every position but starting there seems unlikely.

How about Joe Harper as deadly striker?!

A midfield of Newell, Triantis and Moriah-Welsh could be one of the most competitive in the SPL. Sunderland might not send Nectar back though.

Really, we had them for 6 months and we were hardly world beaters, albeit MW was injured for a bit.

And Nectar didnt play midfield.
And the tactics Monty employed were crap.
