I see he has singed for Colchester, never the worst keeper to be honest, blew hot and cold although for his height you would think he would have been better in the hair

I did not rate Macey at all, atrocious kicking and no presence for a big lad, too soft.

Thought he was pretty decent. Got a hard time because he wasn't Marciano.

Pulled off some decent saves nice height for a goalie but no presence in the box too light needed to work on his upper body strength kicking also an issue either out the park or 60 foot up in the air travelling about 30 yards keeping us under pressure
Wanted him to do well but no

Remember this derby with both him and Gordon making good saves in .

Played well in that game. Thought he might have done better in the league cup final though wasn’t helped by defence in saying that Kyogos movement was excellent

Didn’t really get a hard time. He should have done though. He was terrible.

Was part of the best defence outside the Old Firm for the 18 months he was here. Replacing him with a worse player in Marshall has contributed to our awful defensive record since he left.

He did make a few decent saves, but he was never a good keeper. Command of area was poor, he was so quiet.
I did expect Marshall to come in and make a big difference but he’s been crap tae.

Couldn't agree more, Marshall has been a downgrade on Macey.

He was one of those peculiar Hibs players who instantly gets better in the minds of some fans the second he leaves.
Decent enough shot stopper which is the bare minimum you should really expect from even an amateur goalkeeper. Really poor distribution and not particularly commanding which are two of the attributes that really elevate the modern goalkeeper if they are good at it.
21 appearances in League One since leaving us and a move to a side who finished 3rd bottom of League Two hardly convinces me we made a grave error in letting him go.

His penalty save in the cup final should have been the catalyst for us going on to win. The only player to get pass marks that day. Decent keeper who always produced in the big games. He was fine.

There is absolutely no version of reality where Macey is or ever has been or will be a better goalkeeper than Marshall. Who I don’t think is our current keeper anyway….

I honestly think if we had Macey in goals last season he would have made more saves than Marshall .

I doubt that. Not only about saves either. Macey was a shambles with crosses and using his feet. We went from losing no goals from crosses to losing them every week with him. He was terrible. Their careers couldn’t be much more different. There’s no realistic comparison.

Matt Macey league save % 21/22 = 70.7%
David Marshall 22/23 = 62.3%
David Marshall 23/24 = 66.9%

Crosses and distribution with his feet you've probably got a point about though purely on saves I always thought Macey was pretty good tbh .
Marshall in his prime absolutely there's no question he was a far better keeper though over the last season I still think Macey would have probably made more saves than Marshall , I'd even go further and say that Laidlaw and Dabrowki might have too .
Last season most of the time Marshall looked well off it in his reflexes and agility weren't good . I'm sure somebody mentioned before Marshall's shot stopping stats were pretty poor as well .

Over the course of an entire season its the second most meaningful stat there is, behind expected saves%, which the spfl dont produce.

No it’s not. It doesn’t tell you anything behind it.
Anyway, I don’t need stats to tell me Macey wasn’t good enough and his career overall has played that out.

Explain yourself. What stat do you refer to that is more meaningful?Number of saves doesnt factor in number of shots faced, that is the least meaningful so it cant be that. Or is it just you didnt like Macey and have no interest in stats?

The problem with Macey was he didn’t do anything particularly particularly well. Average shot stopper, average at claiming cross balls, poor in terms of organisation, average in terms of positioning, poor distribution.

Forgot about his fine penalty save in the Scottish Cup Final versus St Johnstone should have been the catalyst to inspire us to greater efforts but sadly not to be

I've never met Macey so I have no view on whether I like him or not. As a football player he was a pretty poor goalkeeper though.
Some stats have a place in football and can tell you some things but not everything.
Percentage of shots saved is one aspect of being a goalkeeper but tells you very little about their general competence. It also has no context on what type of shots we generally give up, how easy or otherwise they were to save. That differs with the team you play in, the players around you, the tactics etc..

…which is where %expected saves made comes in, which is the best stat if it was regularly made available. Over a whole season a keeper faces very large numbers of all sorts of shots, the evidence base is large, so the save% is actually a very useful stat indeed.
I didnt like Macey much either.
