‘Staffing issues’ allegedly…

Collections are pretty random at the best of times but recently have been the best part of a week behind.

Basically the streets are now perm full of bins waiting to be collected so handy they put a ban on parking on pavements so they could all be replaced with wheelie bins blocking them instead!

I'd love to get mine collected on time. It's on my bucket list.

Landfill bin sitting outside the gate since last Wednesday, food waste since yesterday and recycling out this morning. Will just need to see what happens. Some folk in the street struggling with the landfill buckets now.

There's another bin strike looming, although bearing in mind the number of uncollected bins in recent weeks it's like it's already started - and according to this, there is some 'wildcat action' taking place:

https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/politics/missed-edinburgh-bin-collections-blamed-on-rogue-staff-taking-industrial-action-4647086

There's a woeful lack of communication around this, with the council website seemingly the only place to offer updates. As a result we've got streets with landfill, recycling, glass and food waste bins all sitting out for days on end with nobody any the wiser about when they'll be collected.

The worst are the bins overflowing with dog poo bags in the parks. When it gets to that stage I'll just carry the bag home and put in our own bin but most folk seem to just pile the bags on top of the public bins. Disgusting.

The root cause of this is the daft Scottish Government decision to impose a continued council tax freeze. As well as the bins you can also see the knock-on effect in parks where the grass is being allowed to reach knee-height before being cut. Makes no sense to freeze a tax when the services you're paying for are consequently not being provided.

Lots of parks departments are being encouraged to leave grass long insome areas for pollinators and for pollution and carbon absorption.

Yeh, I'm aware of that. Done similar with my elderly in laws' crazily huge lawn (partly to save me having to mow the whole thing!) but when you can usually see the defined areas where they do this. I'm talking here about the entire grass areas simply becoming too overgrown.

The other side of coin, I live in a rural area with no pavements beside the road and today the council has had a JCB with bucket go along the edge of the road to scrape back the grass and now the road sweeper has followed along to sweep up afterwards. I'm not complaining about it but surely there are other priorities.

But my bins are collected on the days they are meant to.

Remember the days the cooncil would spray the kerbside weeds, I know they done away with paraquat because it was lethal to animals and humans but they used an animal and human friendly weed killer for a while and then they just stopped, some lovely well cared gardens in my street ruined by clumps of kerbside weeds

When out walking and seeing all the blue boxes overflowing with bottles of spirits and wine, I know us Scots like a drink but gee whizz some folk are kicking the backside out of it behind closed doors.

Its happening all over the country, weed killers that contain glyphosate cause cancer, and plant based ones are only partially effective, so in the middle of a biodiversity crisis like we’re having it makes sense to allow plants we used to refer to as ‘weeds’ grow and provide pollen. If you dont like them outside your house you could go out with a sharp hoe and get rid, but its also possible to just get used to weeds. Most of them dont do any harm and look quite nice when you get used to them. (Buddleja in your pointing or invasive bamboos that can damage stonework an obvious exception!)

Aha yeah I had a good laugh at that the other day. Obviously no one checks the council website so most of the blue crates have been sitting out for ages.

The upside is a wee wander up the road really tells you which houses like a wee drink or 10!

Vodka seems rather popular from my wee scout about…a few homes had bloody bottles of the stuff. Considering it’s a fortnightly collection it’s pretty impressive to see 6 - 8 empty large empty bottles of it crammed in with a bit of vino as well [emoji1787]

The wee wifey next door to me must be doing a bottle of vodka and white wine a day, she seems to have borrowed someone else’s box for the over flow of bottles, now I know it’s not water she is drinking when she is sitting in the garden. :greengrin

What surprised me most was walking through Murrayfield and Corstorphine and seeing so many whisky & vodka bottles outside folks doors and then coming through Stenhouse and it was more bottled beers and wine.

A weed is just a plant out of place, or so the saying goes.

It’s farcical nowadays. Very few services (which we all contribute too) carry out the most basic tasks on time. Bins are particularly an issue so striking for a pay rise seems a bit rich.

My bins once again not collected when they are meant to. Have to get my kill at them asking for a pay rise when I can’t remember the last time they were collected on the right day. Pish service and they’ll end up ruining the city in August too when they go on strike.

It could be totally coincidental but this started kicking off when someone was arrested for the death of the child hit by a bin lorry
