Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but does anyone know if there will be any fan zones in Edinburgh for the Scotland games? The gardens would be absolutely brilliant for it but no doubt that won't happen! Can't see anything online other than just the usual pubs etc & seen the club are doing one.

Apparently not, the council have decided to have a fan park for the olympics instead someone said to me. I don’t know if that’s true or if the dates even cross over?

The olympics one is true. Somewhere at St James. Pathetic really but they probably look at events in Glasgow and think **** that

There are plenty of pubs to watch the game in and your local pub could probably do with a bit of support. I know some pubs that have recently had TVs installed and upgraded their licence to be able to show sports - One Cannon and Port O' Leith, for example. Get down your local boozer to get full of drink and watch the game. Please drink responsibly.

Did it not all get really quite messy across the country after our game with Brazil in 1998?
I seem to remember a whole nation went on the piss and it didn't end great - possibly why there haven't been fan zones created here for Friday.
A Friday night ko at 8pm isn't ideal from a police and public order point of view.

It's a shame there is no fanzone. It's not like we are short on green space to accommodate one. We could realistically run about 3 or 4 concurrently.
I would rather local publicans reap the benefits of the Scotland games though. You just know a fanzone would be punted out to some Underbelly type company who would rake in huge profits with no real benefit to the wider city. At least this way the guys and girls who slog it out to make a living all year get a fair shot at a lucrative couple of weeks.

I wanted a fanzone so I had somewhere I could watch a game with my laddie that had an atmosphere and a bit of an event. 8pm kick offs at a pub probably aren’t ideal for an 11 year old. I’m taking him to Malones for the Wednesday game as there’s a group of us going from my work, sure it’ll be fine but it’s not ideal really.
A family friendly space to watch games with a bit of an atmosphere should have been a no brainer imo.
If it was just me, i’d rather just go to a pub like you suggest.

tbh, the majority of the fanzones in Scotland are commercial enterprises with very few council run. I dont know many people who want to pay up to £30 to get in a tent to buy an overpriced plastic glass of lager.
I will be in the pub, warm and dry and with a proper beer.
However, to your question - A company did apply to the council and was turned down.
Edinburgh council (run by a Labour / Conservative coalition) are idiots. You should ask your councillor exactly why it was turned down but dont expect a sensible answer.

I’d rather the pubs got the benefit of the increase in trade during the Euros than some here today gone tomorrow pop up fan zone. They’re struggling enough as it is. That would be reason enough for me to refuse a licence.

Cologne is going to be absolutely rammed. Everyone I know who is going for at least some part, is going for that one (I think because it’s the easiest to get to). At least they have an additional public viewing set up which caters for up to 50k. I’m staying in Dusseldorf so if Cologne ends up too busy will always have the option of heading back there as it’s not far. Unless I somehow end up with a ticket.

I suspect there would be enough demand to satisfy a Fanzone and local pubs, and it gives folk the choice as to how they want to watch the game.
It’s really poor that there’s not one in Edinburgh / the comments about Taylor Swift are fair, Edinburgh did brilliantly for those gigs (and brilliantly out of them, as well) - that should be the bar for major events in Edinburgh (from concerts to football matches to rugby to the festival etc)
It feels like this is classism at play, football fans are treated like cattle at the best of times, it’s an opportunity missed.
