Happy centenary to the greatest player ever to play for us, and the greatest ever to play in our country.

He'd hung up his boots before I was even around, but folks, grandparents, uncles and aunties talked about him in a way that pricked up my wee ears. And a lot of them were jambos, but they weren't basing it all on his time there (or Dundee!).

Legend doesn't come close. Happy Birthday, Prince.

Work in Dundee and he's spoken about in legendary terms. Quite rightly so. Am I right in thinking Man United tried to sign him?

Most that have seen from the 5 onwards say Gordon was head and shoulders above any hibs player since, in my experience. Indeed many say hand on heart he was around the best player in the world at the time. Gordon won a quarter of all titles that have been won outside Glasgow ever. 636 games 303 goals and from the right wing, a handsome b* too

Your memory marches on

His biography: Gordon Smith The Prince of Wingers by his son Tony Smith is an excellent read

Brings a tear to a glass eye

Growing up as a wee boy I would ask family members

’ Who was the best player you ever saw? ‘

The answer regardless of allegiance was always

‘ Gordon Smith son ‘

Legend

Edit:

Newcastle offered a blank cheque IIRC

I was privileged to see him but in the mid 50s when I didn't appreciate what I was watching, and he was maybe past his absolute best. He was only brilliant at that stage of his career!

4 championships with 3 different clubs (and not the old firm) and the number of goals he scored speak for themselves.

The memorial when he died brought together Hearts, Dundee and Hibs fans. He transcended rivalry.

Think it was 5 and would have been more if not for the war. My grandad said around 30,000 watched his debut for hearts for their reserves, mostly hibbys

Makes Daz look ugly

My Dad says Laudrup at Rangers was the nearest thing he seen to Smith but Smith was a level above.

He's here!

5 titles in fact. Three with Hibs (could easily have been five) and one each with Hearts and Dundee. Also reached the European Cup semi-finals with Hibs and Dundee.

Won the League Cup with Hearts a very rare badge

Too young to see him, but uncles who had next to no interest in football, let alone Hibs, talked about one player, Gordon Smith. His skill and achievements were legendary. Hibs were blessed.

Refusing to pay for an ankle operation and releasing him on a free must be the most absurd decision Hibs have ever taken.

Didn’t get to see him play but read the book - incredible account of his life. His son really should have been the one to play glory glory to the Hibees on Piano. Would bring a tear to a glass eye.

He’s the one player through the ages I’d loved to have seen play - he seemed to be a world class unique talent. It’s difficult for us to imagine but I wonder how he compares (style and skill) with modern day “GOATs” and you d pretenders…

Yes, I really enjoyed that one. Wish I had seen him in his prime. Older fellow supporter I used to go to games with insisted Gordon was by far the greatest Hibee he had the privilege to watch,- nuff said :not worth:aok:

My uncle from lochend was a diehard Jambo, he told me he used to go to Hibs games to see Gordon Smith who was the best footballer he'd ever seen.

A different era, the same uncle took this diehard Hibby along to 2 Hibs cup finals.

Newcastle offered a blank cheque IIRCIt's a fabulous book. I was born too late to see him play and to some degree, reading about him made the regret worse. So far ahead of his peers in terms of fitness and drills to improve his skills. A man out of time!

Great closed season thread topic.

I think that thread would have to be called "Second worst decision" because nothing could compare to the lack of loyalty and short sightedness about Smith's operation.

To compound the stupidity, I think he paid to have the operation done privately by a leading surgeon who was also on Hibs' board.

When I got his autograph he was out with an ankle injury with a stookie on. Another kid gave him a tennis ball and he played keepie uppie with the stookie leg while signing all the autographs.

My Dad says Laudrup at Rangers was the nearest thing he seen to Smith but Smith was a level above.

Lawrie Reilly in his book made comparisons between The Famous Five and Modern players, for the benefit of fans that never got to see the Famous Five.

Like your dad, Lawrie said Brian Laudrup was the best comparison.

I'm too young to have witnessed him playing, but I always remember that as well as his title winning seasons with us, he went on to play in title winning teams for Hearts and Dundee.

It's inconceivable in today's Scottish game that a player could win titles at 3 clubs without playing for the OF, in fact it's almost inconceivable that a player could win titles at 3 clubs even if he played for both of the OF, such is the stranglehold they have on the Scottish game.

Smith won five league titles which is more than any club outwith the Ugly Sisters.

The next three clubs are Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen (four each), Dumbarton (two) and five teams have one title.

Great stat. If your club wants to win the league call Gordon Smith.

Hearts thought they had the 16 year old Gordon Smith lined up for a ‘trial’ after starring against a Hearts X1 for Junior Club Dundee North End ( Smith was a boyhood Hearts fan ) but the shrewd Willie McCartney pursued young Smith and agreed to meet Gordon Smith and his father at the NB Hotel signed him up on Professional Forms no need for a trial before scoring a hat-trick in a 5-3 win in borrowed boots on his Hibs debut against Hearts at Tiny as a ‘ Trialist’ just to keep Hearts guessing
