*** Spoiler alert ***

In the latest incantation of Rebus he describes himself as “a quiet Jambo”.
I don’t recall that from the books it was a bit of a guessing game.
this production - is it setting the cat amongst the pigeons - he wears a maroon T-shirt for a bit but has Hibs coloured wall paper.
teasing the Hibees methinks…

It has never been mentioned what team Rebus supports in the books. His colleague Siobhan is a season ticket holder at Easter Road and Rebus gives her the occasional ribbing for it but otherwise it's not mentioned.

There were a couple of times in the books (The Falls definitely and I think he mentions it in Black & Blue as well) he accompanied Siobhan to ER but he was generally disinterested in the football in those passages and there was never any indication he was a Hibs fan. It's mentioned he is from Cardenden in one of the books, rather than the more generic 'industrial Fife' and I'm convinced there is mention his dad was a Cowdenbeath supporter but I can't find reference of that so could well be misremembering.

Ian Rankin is from Cardenden (where my my mum grew up and knew his granny) , hence rebus' home town
I seem to remember Rebus saying 'Do Hibs fan weep?' (as in bears in the wood), but like you I don't think he expresses a support for either edinburgh club in the books, Siobhan definitely hibs.
I thought he was Raith Rovers but I can’t recall why I think that.

Ken Stott who played him previously on the telly is a big hertz fan - so is that maybe what you’re thinking?

Ian Rankin is a big Raith fan, had him in the taxi a few times, nice guy and when I asked him about football he gave Raith as his team.

In this new series I’m sure he referenced he was a jambo, almost put my foot through the telly.

You'll probably find that most punters in Glasgow will be Partick Thistle fans when asked by taxi drivers what team they support.

I knew Stott is a Jambo but that wasn’t how he played Rebus - as said the current version of Rebus (on IPlayer now) with Richard l? Rankin playing the lead role he describes himself to his new partner as “a quiet Jambo”.!so this is a wee bit of a stretch.

He lived in Fife for a long time prior to living in Edinburgh.

He grew up there. My point was more that not everyone is comfortable telling strangers what team they support in a tribal city and will answer with something neutral to avoid choosing the "Wrong" option.

I've met him a good few times as he had a contract with Central taxis, spoke about football quite openly, don't think he was hiding anything.
