Just wondering on everyone’s thoughts on the term banded around allot when discussing players such as Amos, or players whom haven’t featured much and come in loan.
“just needs a good preseason”

With sport science, nutrition, recovery all looked at in depth should it really take a preseason for a player that is recovering from injury to get up to speed.

id have though with players keeping a certain level of fitness and reporting back after the summer in decent shape, that the preseason would be fine tuning fitness rather than gaining it from a summer of beers and kebabs.

I don’t think that is the case anymore. As you say, the level of fitness support at clubs nowadays should ensure players are fit virtually all year round. It’s a throw away comment from the past that has stuck around and used as an excuse for not performing

Didn't take Maolida a pre-season to get up to speed 👍

Think it very much depends on the player. Some need a pre-season to get going fully, some don't.

I don't think it means much in this context any more.

I remember speaking to someone who eventually went on to be in a prominent management position at Hibs when he was still a player, many years ago... and he spoke about a squad goalkeeper at his then club eating as much as he possibly could at an all you can eat breakfast buffet before going to their end of season weigh in so he seemed heavier than he was and could have more fun over the summer before reporting back for pre-season. That was the best part of 15 years ago now though, possibly more, and I reckon times have changed.

Where I think pre-season is significant is to start it and prepare tactically with the manager who is going to be in charge for the next year. Last year was possibly the worst way to start a season, ejecting a manager after 3 league games and it reflects so, so badly on how we're run as a club. I'm encouraged by the fact that our new head coach will have the full pre-season with the players with players ideally being recruited to play the way he wants to play. That can only be in our interests. A few of our recent incumbents can reasonably point to having to work with what they inherited and some of their struggles can legitimately be put down to those players not really being fit to play the way the manager wanted to.

Every player and every injury is different, some players get an injury and are out for a long time, and when they get back they might be fit but certain aspects of them are not quite 100% and maybe not the original injury lets them down but parts of the body linked to it do.

A good pre season cant be a bad thing.

Scott Allan used to start his pre-season early as it took him longer to get back to peak fitness. When he first signed for us it took him a few months to get fully up to speed.

As another poster highlighted, all players are built different, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to getting players to peak fitness.

Maolida had been playing in Germany before he arrived.

Maolida had been playing in Germany before he arrived.

Fair enough but, according to Wikipedia, it was 9 games for the Hertha reserve team.

We'll be seeing very little of Amos before his inevitable 2025 departure.
