View Full Version : Positive spin - Looking to the future
Unseen work

A positive spin on the last couple of months and the situation we now find ourselves in.
We have undoubtedly got alot wrong from recruitment, sacking Ross and then the hiring of subsequent managers. I don’t actually think Johnson can be classed as a failure due to his league finish, Europe and some of the results he got - but that’s another debate.
I think this last 6 months is the club acknowledging they’ve got alot wrong and are moving us in the right direction now.
Black Knights - They’ve invested a large sum of money for a small amount of our club which shows significant growth for us as a club. But it shows we’re asking for help and for advice on how to run a club better and get access to better players, practices and recruitment strategies.
Squad - It seems apparent the club realised they’ve had a nightmare with signings and are now putting in work to cut the size of the squad significantly in order to get better quality. There must be about 8 pretty much confirmed as leaving already.
Sacking Montgomery - I think the only argument people had for him was “we can’t keep sacking managers”. 4 league wins since 9th of December, no improvement in the team and no particularly good results during his tenure. It was the right decision imo and if it wasn’t now, it would have been after we recruited players for him in the summer and realised he still was rubbish come September. The timing of it? I genuinely think was to create a less toxic atmosphere for Stevenson and Hanlon tonight.
Malky Mackay - I think it shows bravery from the club, and a real willingness to succeed. They could have appointment someone else but they’ve went for the person they’re confident in, despite the outside noise. He’s a very good and experienced manager and numerous levels and was technical director at the SFA for 4 years where he got alot of praise. One thing we’ve needed for years is someone with a wealth of knowledge, particularly in Scottish football. Mackay has that, is well respected within football and had a plethora of contacts. I think he’ll allow us to get managers that would previously have been put off by us as they trust him.
If you’re unsure on Mackay, watch this https://youtu.be/YWu9SLdYAUQ?si=SBioKKizPVs2T4Qa
I watched it last week after hearing he was coming in and was thoroughly impressed.
The point is, the steps we’ve taken this year are imo the club recognising they’ve had a nightmare and are putting things in place to get it right. The reaction over the last 24 hours seems like people are just learning of our mess, where as it’s been there a while - we’re being ruthless now to sort it
Let’s see how it develops and judge them on what they do going forward, not continuously beat them with the same stick from the last couple of years.

Good post. It's good to feel positive about the club again and can now really look forward to next season.

I agree as well. The three announcements of Monty leaving, MM appointed and less importantly Tait leaving were all positive. Looking forward to more changes and renewed optimism for next season.

If I’m trying to be as positive as possible:
BKFC - Will be interesting to see the extent of the investment in the summer. If we can get a couple guys the standard/impact of Maolida, then that will put us in a position where we’re almost undoubtedly signing better players than anyone outside the OF. He’s certainly head and shoulders above the likes of Spittal, Penrice etc at Hearts, so a few signings of that level will close the gap massively.
Manager - Montgomery being gone is a massive positive. Put simply, he was an absolutely god awful manager.
Mackay - Putting aside my feelings towards him as a person, I don’t think it’s all that exciting an appointment. That being said, I do think he’ll do a better job of appointing a manager than the previous folk as I’d be surprised if he over complicates it. I’m praying the fact he’s pals with McInnes can lead to him coming here. If he could pull that off, it would be an outstanding start for him
The squad - I still think the squad is decent enough. I think it’s a top 5 squad. A few good additions in the summer and even a competent manager and I think it would be capable of pushing for third.

For as long as Ben Kensell and Ian Gordon continue to walk through the doors at Easter Road and East Mains I can't put a positive spin on things.
The amount of fans money/Gordon money that has been wasted over last few years on incompetent managers and players is eye bleeding.
Ben's days must be numbered. As for Ian Gordon, well, I would be more hopeful looking to the future if the Gordons put the club up for sale. If they don't do this, then at the very least, appoint qualified people to appropriate roles in the club. MacKay, he's yet another who is going to learn on the job.

I won't pretend to be as optimistic as you are looking forward but after the last few days reading your post has put a smile on my face. It's great that someone is trying to get a more positive vibe going. Thanks.

There's always hope.
Whatever happens we will start the new season with a new manager. We will undoubtedly sign some new players and get some in on loan.
For all the uncertainty surrounding the Black Knights group involvement the one club they own outright has punched massively above it's weight in the toughest league in the world this season. OK Hibs aren't their main consideration, but I can see absolutely no reason, or benefit, in them allowing the club to fail .... In fact, for Hibs to be the vehicle they wan't it to be, IE playing in Europe, they need it to succeed or they will have pointlessly spaffed 6 million quid, with more to come, up the wall. OK that's peanuts to them, but most billionaires don't become that rich by being stupid with their money.
As for the Gordons. Yeh mistakes have been made, but they could have walked away when Ron passes and they didn't. I think their commitment is genuine and they are at last beginning to learn, even if it has been the hard way, that the running of the football side is best left to folk who know more about football than they do.
Rod Petrie was in charge of this club for over 20 years and in all that time he failed to recognise the unavoidable correlation between success on the pitch and commercial opportunity / success, even then the club singularly failed to cash in on the cup win with little or no merchandise made available apart from a DVD. He lasted the best part of a quarter of a century, I think the Gordons can be afforded a little more leeway to get it right.
So yeh. I don't think it's time just yet to make everything doom and gloom.

I definitely think the Gordons should be given the benefit of the doubt, it looks like they made mistakes and are trying to rectify that,Im not overjoyed with Mackays appointment, but if he proves me and others wrong then nice one. Just get the right manager in, thats all Im asking for and the rest will take care of itself as they say.

Despite some of Petries failings I think he did a better job than the Gordons have especially from whats been shown on the pitch and manager appointments. I think the Gordons have wasted alot of money so far.

I agree with the OP. And I would really encourage everyone to watch the video he has linked to. There are times that I really feel the club has been punished by the Scottish football clique for bringing in managers from out of Scotland. It will be interesting to see if the referees and media are a bit fairer to us now we have one of the in-crowd as our sporting director. One thing I very confidently predict.....next season will be better not worse.

Start next season with positive results and there won’t be the need for any spin. Winning Hibs team gets fans onside. Hoping for a better start next season

Stability and steady progression should rightly be the desired metric at a football club . However, one thing the current chaos at Hibs isn't, is boring.
I'm excited to see the summer of change. New investment, new facilities, new manager/coach and of course some exciting new players, hopefully.
As these start happening I feel everyone's enthusiasm will start rising and ER should be buzzing at start of next season.

Hibs are soft, full of soft players with hearts of mice. No leaders, no driven characters. MM is a departure from the norm that has got us nowhere. I’d love Hibs to be successful while playing beautiful, free-flowing football all within the spirit of the game. But am now at a point where, we need a team that can fight, scrap and battle with the rest and stand up for themselves and the fans. If that means bringing in some hard nosed defenders/midfielders so be it. Hopefully some interesting changes to come.

Ok, optimism:
A terrible manager has gone and it’s hard to think we won’t improve on that. There’s Black Knights support of various sorts on the way. Long overdue player clear out at least commences this window, even if the bulk of contracts are another year away from ending. The accounts are set to look better next year. We almost certainly won’t be playing that mind numbing pass it along the back line crap next season.

Ian Gordon effectively owns Hibs, if you can't come to terms with that fact you need to find another hobby to keep yourself occupied.
