View Full Version : Lap of 'honour'
Monts
13-05-2024, 09:15 AM
For those who left before the end or didn't make the game, following the final whistle and usual handshakes, Monty led the team round the stands, clapping the fans to a chorus of boos.
At the time I thought this was disrespectful, a bit like disregarding the fans opinions and going for it anyway.
But thinking about it now, does it also show a bit of character and balls that haven't really been evident in him before?
Or was it just avoiding going down the tunnel to even more focussed boos?
Thoughts?

You've said it blunter than I would have but you are spot on. It shows a terrible lack of judgement - which unfortunately is in keeping with his time as manager at Hibs.

They do it every game to show appreciation to the fans. It is obviously more uncomfortable for them when they lose but they can’t suddenly not bother or that would be hiding.

That's why it is a mistake to do it every game. Sets yourself up for unneccessary uncomfortable cringeworthy laps of dishonour. The only thing missing is rotten fruit being thrown at the team.

I get that he's always done and can't really change it now, but does anyone really give a flying one if the manager/players give appreciation to us.
I appreciate good football, desire etc. Not fussed about someone clapping at me.

He does it every week win, lose or draw. He was about in the stand at Ross County last week. He stood there clapping, looking a bit blank and taking a lot of stick at Motherwell.
It’s funny, I remember Johnson getting stick for always just disappearing straight up the tunnel when we lost but being front and centre when we won.
Just shows that, as long as the team is putting in pitiful performances, you're snookered whatever you do.

He's getting slated regardless. Get yourself and the team down the tunnel pronto to avoid the deeply unpleasant and inevitable vitriol that you know is coming.

I don't have a problem with it as a ritual but you have to assume the players don't give a f*** what the fans think. If they did they'd put more of an effort into impressing them on the pitch in order to avoid their hostility post-match.
In saying that, there were so few fans left yesterday that it was hardly like the players were facing a cauldron of rage.
If we lose comfortably again on Wednesday the only reason anyone will be still hanging around will be to say bye to Hanlon and Stevenson.

Fixed that for you.
I actually stayed to the bitter end yesterday and I'm ashamed to say a random group of us lost the plot when Monty came over to the West Stand. After a defeat I normally leave the ground thinking 'oh well, that was crap' but he got it with both barrels yesterday. That second half was probably one of the most spineless, inept perfomances I've seen from a Hibs side in my 54 years of watching them. It actually looked as if most of them weren't trying or didn't care about the result. Where's your professional pride guys?
I'll be back as usual on Wednesday night but things could turn really toxic if we get off to a bad start.

I stayed at the end and I did clap but not for the players but the Jersey as I can't boo Hibernian Football club .
And if I'm being Frank it took guts for him and the players to walk round the ground and take their "Punishment "
Might spur them on for the next 2 games

To go against the grain - I quite like it.
It shows balls to face up to a potentially tricky situation come rain or shine and show gratitude to those who turn up to support and (to use a phrase I generally hate) pay your wages.
The only issue I have is that going by his comments after the game yesterday, somehow Hibs' professional footballers find it difficult to play football in a slightly tricky environment when they should be 100% focussed on what is going on on the pitch, yet walking around facing up to furious punters appears to be straightforward.
I don't really have any issue with the players and manager, at the end of the game, seeing the whites of the crowd's eyes. Quite the opposite.
And this is at a time when I'm criticising the manager, the players and the club for practically everything.

It's tone deaf in these situations not to realise there's a middle ground - they can group in the centre circle, clap and hold their hands up, then trudge off.
15 seconds, done and dusted, none of this ceremony which becomes utterly cringeworthy for all involved.

Agreed…poor guy looks totally bewildered and needs relieved of his post as soon as possible. What I find more cringeworthy though is him shaking hands and high-fiveing players as he’s dolefully walking round the pitch.
I somehow can’t image Ferguson, Turnbull, or Jim McLean shaking players’ hands after a 0-4 reversal to a crap team at home.

Motherwell haven’t lost to Hibs in last 4.
They have also only lost 1 in last 6 or 2 in last 8.
Beat Hibs and they will finish above us.
Have a feeling we need to win next 2 to finish 7th if anyone cares. But we never win 2 in a row and rarely keep a clean sheet so signs aren’t good.
Think more probably finish 9th which will be worst since 2013/2014 when we lost in playoff and got relegated - Finished 11th that season.

There will always be an element of supporters that will never be happy.
You’ve just been horsed by one of the worst Aberdeen performances in recent years….. it’s probably not what the fans are wanting. Hence why most of them were already in the pub, moaning about them all.
Why is wandering around clapping at angry folks showing balls or garnering respect? It’s moronic.

He’s getting slaughtered for being a bad manager, clapping a crowd baying for your blood isn’t helping anything. Anyway it’s a pointless argument really, it won’t affect our performance whether he walks around clapping after a game or not. It just looks ridiculous in my opinion.

Yes exactly, thats why its poor judgement.
Choice 1 - quick clap from the centre circle then straight up the tunnel resulting in some criticism from a few on social media for not clapping the fans properly.
Choice 2- a humiliating and debillitating parade round the ground to be roundly booed with people screaming at you to **** off out the club whilst waving white hankies. All just to appease a few fans who think that they should be clapped for having turned up.
Both options still result in 95% of fans wanting rid of you. Having a few people on social media saying you are brave for facing them doesn't change that. Option 1 is the better choice.

If the team hadn’t done it there would be another thread on here from someone else complaining about the lack of respect from the team and manager not doing a lap. I want him out as much as the next man, but in this scenario there is no winning.

An acknowledgment of the fans continued support. A round about way of an apology in defeat and not f we do win, then some reciprocal acknowledgment is returned by the fans.

It seems to be another thing that’s creeped over from Europe like the ultra culture, where players stay back to get a ticking off from the support after a bad result. They used to just do a wee clap from the centre circle and then everyone called it a day. Looks completely pointless to me, but going by this thread others seem to expect it so I guess it’s staying.

In Oz it’s common place for the team to go round the ground and get photos /sign autographs/ exchange high Fives with their supporters after the game.
Even the international teams…particularly the Matildas, go out of their way to interact with their fans….to the point now where their supporters whinge like hell if they don’t.
I guess you could say it’s now all part of the match day experience.
I’m quietly surprised that such a humble exercise warrants a thread of several pages.
