View Full Version : Players that carried the team…

Just recalling players of yesteryear and how some seasons we just seemed to have one player to carry the team. Maybe it’s just my beer addled - google-free mind but…

Jackson in his final couple of seasons seemed to get us out of trouble

Sparky when we were just ****** under Fenlon - albeit he took the plaudits and the spotlight whilst Doyle chipped in with vital goals - but then he left and sparky often had to create and score his own.

easier to snuff out I suppose tho :/

Boyle for about the last 5 years.

Boyle in the first half of 21/22 before he was sold was a one man team.

Griffiths is without a doubt the best example of it for me though.

Yip even opposition fans could only step back and admire

Without thinking too hard his goal at Tiny in the Millennium Derby His free kicks versus Falkirk and Dundee and his header when he lost his front teeth versus them

Special mentions Sparky versus Falkirk and Jim Leighton and Darren Jackson versus Airdrieonians in the play off only delayed the inevitable

Boyle for about the last 5 years.

Made even more impressive when you consider he wasn't even here for a decent chunk of that time.

semi-final v Falkirk!

Griffiths started that game and missed a pen. Eoin Doyle and Danny Handling (pre horrendous injuries) changed that game.

Edit: Tom Taiwo as well. Robertson, Carney and Thomson were subbed off. KT was slow as a week in the jail by then, Robertson was injured and Carney was too fat to break into a sprint.

Great lad. Career ruined by a mix of Butcher and a Killie player.

This. Latapy, Mixu, John O'Neil, Matias Jack, Gary Smith and others all did their fair share of the lifting.

Claros, Doyle, and Ben Williams all had good seasons under Fenlon. Although yeah, Griffiths was by FAR our best player.

Griffiths and Doyle left in the same summer window.

Boyle for about the last 5 years.

No danger. The 6 months before he left, yeah. Otherwise, disagree.

19/20 Doidge and Scott Allan carried us.
20/21 - Nisbet scored 20 goals or something
21/22 - Absolutely, but left in January.
22/23 - Na
This season - certainly not.

Des Bremner in the late 70s. Maybe didn't carry the team as we had Ally Macleod but we fell apart when he left and ended up relegated.

John Collins, I have memories of other players passing the ball to him then standing back and watching him but it was a long time ago so I don’t remember it clearly!

That's how I remember it as a young lad as well. Des did all the midfield grafting and Ally supplied the class

We went from a mid table, half decent side, to relegation fodder.... while he went on to a great career with Villa.

He was part of the side that were League Champions in '81, then European Champions in '82.

Great shout on Goram. He was an astonishing player and earned us alot of points (and broke Scott Crabbes heart at Tynecastle as well 😂) and it's all thanks to Celtic nipping in and pipping us for the signing of Ian Andrews 👀😂

For me Sauzee, was in a great team but when he was injured the defence wasn’t the same, team was noticeably different

Franck was but by the time of McLeish's departure that side was on the wane. We'd lost Latapy due to his pre cup final antics and Eck had replaced a few players with lesser quality ones. Hurtado being a prime example. Lovell, for me, should not have been let go either.

With hindsight, Franck probably shouldn't have been offered the job but he was the one we wanted, certainly I did. His biggest problem was replacing himself as our best player and like you say the defence just wasn't close to what it was with him in it. Fenwick, in particular I felt, looked solid beside Franck, lost without him.

Star player and carrying the team are different. Carrying a team to me means the other 10 starters are crap or average which was far from the case with the team stokes played in.

Still think he merits a mention in that game of games you could tell he was building up to one good performance to end 114 years of misery could easily have scored a hat-trick every Hibs player was a hero that day but Stokes is definitely mentioned in dispatches
