View Full Version : Hibs v Rangers - The Spirit of 2016
My eldest son is a Season Ticket holder who has been an East Standing Section stalwart since it opened in 2010. Yet when faced with the choice of an outdoors event in the Highlands or a ticket for the final in May 2016, he chose munro bagging and watching Ospreys in Boat of Garten instead.
He simply didn't rate our chances. Nobody did really, particularly the Scottish football media. To be honest, not many Hibs Supporters did, even though the Cream Buns weren't the force they are today.
What we didn't reckon on was the will to win of that team. When we brought Liam on, the midfield four of McGeoch, McGinn, Fyvie and Hendo fought like Trojans whilst our defence pressed forward past the half way line. They put Rangers under so much pressure that last 20 minutes that they turned defeat into victory.
In my avatar I can be seen on the pitch celebrating with my youngest lad. How many times have I recreated that memory and of the parade down Leith Walk in my mind and imagined the three of us celebrating together.
Apologies for the ramble. But was there a Hibs victory over the smellies that you missed but wished you had been there?

Maybe only the 0-3 at Ibrox where Sproule scored his hat trick. I don't think I was there but maybe I was - old age and the other 0-3 (which I definitely was at) is playing tricks with my memory!

I went to the cinema instead of going to Ibrox when we beat them 3-0 in 2010. Im sure Liam Miller scored from 25 yards.

When we beat them 1-0 at Ibrox back in 2007 to go top of the league (David Murphy with the winner). I lived in Glasgow at the time, just across the Clyde from Ibrox, and had the chance to go to the game but turned it down. I do recall the glum faces of the Gers fans trudging home at FT.

I had to look that game up as couldn't recall it. Some goal from John Rankin!
He's here!

Yes, the highlight of Calderwood's otherwise forgettable tenure.
I was at both 3-0 games at Ibrox under Mowbray. Sproule's hat-trick was unforgettable but on balance I preferred the cop tie because of the atmosphere. We took a great support through.

No VAR goal checks, proper football, proper celebrations.

I remember being in a boozer in Rutherglen pre match and the general consensus seemed to be we're going to do this, there was just a different atmosphere in the pub.

We were in a cricket club pre-match - there’s definitely was a different vibe from previous finals. It was the only one i can remember where i genuinely thought we’d be alright.
Even at 1-2 i mind saying to my son we’d be alright. It’s easy to say it now in hindsight, but i genuinely never got nervous in that game until the final few seconds after we scored the winner.

That last couple of minutes after the Sir David Gray corner were the longest of my life. Rangers were a burst ba' after that third goal though.
When you look back, we have actually scored three against them a good few times, four once and even five, that time in a crazy draw.
Here's hoping for at least a couple of goals to cheer today.

just before Calderwood? (still shaking my head at him) looked in the bag of sweeties. If he never managed again that’s some admission…

been watching hibs for almost 40 years. (less in recent 5/10 years due to other commitments) Had some high highs... and very low lows..
Game I missed was 5-1 Killie league cup final due to having booked to take my wife to Madrid as a Christmas present long before us getting to final. I went to see outside of Santiago Bernabeu when match was on... only info I had was my Hearts supporting mate sending me text updates ... after 3rd goal I did wonder if he was winding me up :greengrin
My favourite games are always the ones where we are totally written off and somehow manage to get a result - maybe thats part of what being a Hibs supporter is about?
on our run in 2016 I have always wondered how many supporters actually went to every single match? I bet it is only a few hundred at most.
there is something about choosing not to 'hide behind the couch' when there is a chance you might have the front row seat to something special. Yes we have suffered Cup final humiliation against Hearts... defeat by Livi etc etc (painful if you make a full list) but then there are the games that all the planning / cost / travelling / emotional investment etc of being a supporter pays off.... and risking not being there is not for me.
this evening is one of those occasions that I hope to be able to say in years to come...'aye I WAS there'

The 3-1 at Hampden in Nov 2021. Still raging with myself.

Yep that as my mindset also was genuinely the first Scottish cup final when thought we had a decent chance of winning.

Walking down the East terrace at Hampden with my son when Stokes scored the first in 2016 was truly epic, knew we had a great chance to win and so it proved.

My mate had a ST for centre stand close to the Broomloan end - his mate was on holiday so he asked if I wanted to go - I said no but my wife and daughter encouraged me to go and I did - that was the very same game you are talking about . I had a very good view of several glum faces - happy days 🤭

There was only about 300/400 of us there for the Calderwood game. No one gave us a chance as we were awful and rangers were unbeaten in the league and from memory think were unbeaten at Ibrox for a couple of years. Unbelievable night.

The 4-0 league win at ER over the Ibrox mob when Stubbs was our manager. I somehow managed to get it into my brain that it was a Sunday match (no idea how that happened). I was looking at match results online at teatime on the Saturday when I came across the match report (Mrs thought it was hilarious). I've watched the highlights umpteen times since and can't believe I missed it for such a stupid mistake.
The guys that sit around me at ER have never let me forget it and I get pelters quite often. What a prat!

Currently in Lisbon. Unfortunately booked well before rangers fans ended up here! If anyone has a bar recommendation to watch the game. “The British bar” is close by as an option though wouldn’t be my first choice haha

Mind you it would be lovely to see their ugly faces 😅
