This is something that boggles my mind.

Quite apart from the "how", which is down to my non-scientific brain, it's more about the bigger issues.

Here we have 2 nations who are able to pool resources and intelligence for the furthering of knowledge for each and both, and the wider world. Yet, on a different level, they have a deep mistrust of each other which is being played out all over the world in different theatres.

On one hand, furthering humanity. On the other, threatening its existence.

Discuss.

It's a bit saccharine at times, but "For All Mankind" on Apple TV is quite thought provoking on this point.

Politics: Fear and control, by causing division, ultimately making rich people richer by using your money, while others suffer
Versus
Science: A pursuit to explore new possibilities to improve the knowledge and quality of the world, as people are ultimately all the same and should live in unity

When Politics controls Science, you get 'Follow the science'
Science cannot control Politics
Politics doesn't give a crap about the Space Station, unless it has a big ****** off laser gun on it, which points to the latest bogeyman.

Devil's advocate question.

Does politics not control the science here? In that, it's the Governments that are funding it. Funding co-operation and progress, whilst simultaneously shooting the **** out of each other elsewhere.

Yes, they do fund it. However, it is minuscule compared to budgets on weapons etc. So it's paying lip service to the space agency, on the proviso that it doesn't rock the boat.

Other contradictions to logic would include :
- The US sending aid to Gaza while arming Israel. Also the US plans to send aid payments to Israel!?
- The West complaining about Russia being a threat to the world, while the West has created military bases that surround Russia
- The Democrates saying the best way to preserve democracy is to prevent the people voting for a particular Republican candidate

Its the " human condition " as the French would say. We can have both at the same time.
