View Full Version : Hibs goalkeeper situation in the future.

I was reading that Joe Hart is retiring at the end of the season which had me wondering will Marshall be our No 1 next season or will Wollacott take over or decide to move on for first team football if marshall stays no 1 ? . I can't say I've seen enough of Wollacott to form an opinion of him tbh and Murray Johnsons probably to young yet .
Probably a bit early to be discussing it though read that Mark Gillespie was coming out of contract at Newcastle United . I think he was at Motherwell at one time though don't remember how good he was and even if he'd be a realistic target for us either .
The other one I read coming out of contract is Siegrist at Celtic who Aberdeen are apparently wanting according to the sun today . I think if we are needing to sign a keeper he will have to have good distribution with the way we play under Monty too .
I was just wondering what your thoughts was on our goalkeeping situation going forward 👍

Realistically, there's a decent chance we will have the Killie goalie on loan from Bournemouth next season. I'm not sure I particularly rate him very highly and would prefer more experience back there but I think that's the route we will go down.

At this point I can't see anyone taking Marshall's jersey unless he decided to retire. I think he's out of contract mind you so who knows if NM thinks he's good enough for a new deal?

Marshall has been okay recently after a shaky spell earlier in the season. I'd be okay with him if we can't bring in someone better.

He might stay another year mate though I thought maybe there was a possibility that even though Wollacott is under contract till 2026 he might then want to move for first team football instead to help his international career if that makes any sense 😆. If we are needing a keeper I don't think siegrist would be a bad option btw .

We need a significant upgrade on Marshall next season otherwise we'll continue to struggle.
He's not good enough now and certainly won't be any better next season.

Might Marshall be on a pretty tasty wage as well?
His pre-Hibs credentials were pretty good, befitting of a top earner at the time. Whilst he's had a decent enough season, I don't think he's at that sort of level any more.

Completely agree. Think he’s out of contract in the summer, wouldn’t be offering another year.

There's surely no chance Marshall will get a new contract. I'd expect Wollacott to leave and a new number one to come in with Johnson as back up.

The only way for me that Marsh should stay another year is if he's happy being the number 2 and picking up whatever wage that should normally entail. I do like him and feel safe with him so wouldn't be against having him waiting in the wings if anything did happen to whatever Number 1 we decide to go with as I personally think we should look to move Wollacott on and sign a new proper number 1.
I also think having someone like Marsh taking more of a mentor role to someone like Murray Johnson could be massively beneficial for him.

We need to show we’re serious about sorting things out at that end of the park. We’ve been poor defensively since Marshall came in. Not all down to him obviously and I actually think he’s been decent most of the time this season. With contract situations there is an opportunity for us to totally rebuild between goalkeeper and centre half and I think we should take it.

I'd consider keeping him as an experienced back up but definitely think we need a first choice keeper in the summer.

Is Murray Johnson ready to take number 1 next season? If not is he ever likely to realistically make that step up? Genuine questions as I only know he is highly rated.
He’ll be 20 a few months into next season, so still young, but gone are the days where it’s uncommon to see keepers playing first team football in their teens. Feels like he’s been in purgatory forever, caught between a couple of short loans and waiting for a chance at Hibs.

If he's highly rated then he should be getting league cup games next season and have an experienced back up, if not marshall then someone else...need to see if he is going to be first team material
Monty rates Marshall as one of the best keepers in the league. He's slated by some for being superglued to his line but given Carson's comedy routine and the persistent blocking of keepers perhaps it is best judgement.
Can't think of obvious blunders in recent months. Would say I'm happy with his form.

Seriously? Your expecting a teenage keeper to be first choice for a Premier league team? I think there's one teenage starting keeper in the SPFL at the moment. Johnson needs to get out on loan to a championship team next season and get competitive minutes under his belt.

There's been less glaring errors from DM over the last few months at least, and his shot stopping is decent enough but in reality we need an upgrade.
There's a lot of work to be done over the summer though, so it wouldn't surprise if this position isn't prioritised

Would imagine they have plans for him, but assuming they don’t, I’d absolutely take the boy Wickens that’s on loan at Ross County from Fulham this season.

I wonder if the young keeper Bournemouth signed from Queens Park may come to us in some capacity.
Think he was only 17 so maybe not for the first team but heard he was pretty exceptional so you never know!

Marshall has looked in better physical condition under the new coach and has performed well since Monty came in.
However, he will be 39 in a weeks time.
His contract expires in the summer and his age means it's time for Hibs to move on.
In the meantime Hibs goalkeeping coach will be monitoring, 27 years old, Wollacott closely and informing Monty of his thoughts including whether he believes Jojo is good enough to move up to 1st choice next season. 99% of Hibs supporters are in no position to assess this keepers abilities in any meaningful way but as ever that won't stop them.
Other Hibs senior keepers contracted for next season are 21 years old Max Boruc and 19 years old Murray Johnson.

Actually think Marshall has improved a lot lately, despite thinking he should have done better with McCowans goal. Would be happy if he stayed next season as a number 2.
Wollacott? Not convinced he’ll still be here although I’ve liked the look of him when I’ve seen him.
Siegrest - Likely be on the move however he’s terrible with the ball at his feet so can’t see us going there.
Dennis - Obvious option with the Bournemouth link, getting rave reviews at Killie. Again unsure how good he is with the ball at his feet though and has made a couple of blunders himself, albeit he is young.
I think they’ll be desperate to get a goalie really comfortable on the ball. I’m just hoping they don’t go down that route and he’s hopeless at being an actual keeper, like choose Maxwell over Marciano 🤣

Marshall is a good goalie, most teams in our league would take him in a heartbeat.
The question is, is he the right goalie for Hibs? I dont think so if we are wanting to play out from the back.

Think Marshall might be offered an extension on a reduced wage. Wollacott I think will move on to pursue first team football. Boruc and Johnstone will go out on loan to keep giving them first team football with a view to bringing one of them into the back up role the following season.
But I think we’ll go for another keeper to either be first choice or provide better competition to Marshall.

I’ve been watching a bit of the MLS over the past few months and a keeper that has really impressed me is Drake Callander of Inter Miami, not suggesting he would be a candidate for us but I wonder if it’s a market we would look at again after the Chris Mueller disappointment.

Thought the Dundee keeper made a harder save from Boyles shot than the one Dundee scored from.
Think Marshalls reflexes are on the downward slide and will only get worse.

Thought the same, looked really confident and assured. I’m not sure if it’s because they actually look the same but he reminded me of the little I’ve seen of Boruc.
He saved 2 penalties against Celtic and also recorded a new record in the league with the most saves in a game against rangers, think it was 19 or 20.

Marsh has cut out the howlers in the past 2/3 months and saved most things you'd expect a goalie to save. Also had a couple of great games.
I'm still pretty amazed that people would see him as out starting goalie next season. He's had to come off 2/3 times already this season with what appear to be minor niggles, just does not command his area and for the 2 years he's been here it's probably been 5/10. For a high earner (I assume) we need better and there are plenty of better goalies.

It's only a month ago that Marshall makes a mess of a kick, gives it right to a Rangers player 30 yards from our goal.
He was at fault on both trips to Tynecastle last season aswell IMO, not someone we can rely on now, never mind next year.

I think Johnson was unlucky he got recalled from QoS early in the season as Marshall and Wallcot both took knocks.
QoS then took hearts keeper on and that was him scuppered from going back out on loan.
Boruc has started every game since going to Arbroath, although he did have a bit of a humping last. Getting good game time but probably still a bit young for SPFL.
