Many Happy Returns Mickey

Probably the best uncapped player ever

Precision passer on a short fuse could hit a 50p piece at 50 yards

Thanks for the memories

I know it's been said a million times before, but how he was never capped for Scotland was an absolute crime, Happy Birthday Alex!

Any younger fans wondering about bias might like to know about the 8 week suspension handed to Mickey post four bookings - co-incidentally when Hibs were mounting a title challenge.

One of the greatest to have graced the Easter Road turf. The selectors who overlooked him, and denied him a Scotland cap, were a disgrace.

Happy Birthday Alex, and many more of them.

Remember a league cup tie at Easter Road with them both going hammer and tong the whole game . Mickey was too clever and skilful for McDonald but I must admit I spent most of the game waiting for Mickey to take the bait and get sent off ……. He had a short fuse did Mickey but I still think he was the most talented player in the tornadoes team , a joy to watch

Yip pretty sure that game was played on a Wednesday afternoon 1.30 pm kick off during the power cuts 20000 still turned up finished 0-0 Rangers going through 0-2 from the first leg

No quarter given or asked from both sides IIRC

Happy Birthday Alex.

My old dad used to talk about having the odd cup of tea with 'Mickey' in the Tiffin on Easter Road!

I'm too young to have seen him play, but my old man said he was a genius with a football.

That figure would be 10% of his weekly wage if he was playing today though not for Hibs obviously :greengrin

I've spent a lot of time over the years wishing I'd seen a lot of players for instance like the famous five and Gordon Smith in particular, Duncan Edwards, Ramond Kopa, John Charles and many more but I'm so grateful for having seen wee Alex. He was a brillant player who could have played in any company in any era and stood out a mile.

Referees gave him little or no protection as he was booted around the park on a weekly basis, preferring to watch for the inevitable retaliation and the opportunity to book him.

East fife booted hell out of him in our 1-0 win which he got booked and then sure he got booked against Aberdeen ( Chic Mcleland sure it was him that got him booked) so he was then suspended for 8 weeks and that finished our league challenge with him and brownlie out.

Anderson received no suspension at all.

That was the problem. We had a fabulous first 11. One or two injuries or suspensions and we had average replacements.

Can you imagine the separate sittings.

Sfa members summing up to Mickey Edwards - Mr Edwards, you have been found guilty of playing with gusto and attitude for Hibernian FC. We hereby suspend you for eight weeks. And Mr Edwards, be warned next time we find you in front of us, we will punish you severely.

Sfa members summing up to Alan Anderson - Mr Anderson, we have carefully considered the charge against you. Carry on Mr Anderson. As you were lad.

I remember reading that back in the day if your hearing was in the morning at the SFA you were always dealt with severely but in the afternoon after a liquid lunch the beaks were a bit more genial

I dare say Hibernian FC were always booked in for the morning session

I remember getting the day off school to go to that game . Could be wrong but I think Iain Munro played in that game , strange thing I never really took to him always felt if he played left back he was a poor man’s Eric Schaedler and if he played left midfield he was a poor man’s Alex Cropley . He would probably walk into the current team so I guess it just shows how spoiled we were with the talent in the tornadoes team

Maybe your school was closed because of the power cuts?

IIRC, that was one of the reasons the crowd was so good. A lot of workplaces would've been closed.

The game was played 21/11:1973 with the usual Tornadoes line up with Iain Munro as a used sub

Hibs bombarded them that day but were unable to make the breakthrough with Ally Scott man marking John Brownlie to try and curb his danger

I liked Iain Munro but a bit of a head scratcher as Eddie Turnbull decided to swop him for Ally Scott and Graeme Fyfe

Even stranger was the fact he only played 12 games for Rangers before moving to St Mirren ?

I was at school that day, right next door to the ground!
(Leith Academy annexe) very surreal listening to the roar of the crowd and not knowing what was happening!

Yup, back then they barely pretended the dice weren't loaded.
Having said that he did have a terrible habit of reacting to challenges and being wound-up.
Brilliant, brilliant player & we just didn't have anyone to replace him.
