Thanks for that - Club record transfer of £4,500, beating off clubs like Arsenal & Newcastle.
According to an inflation website that works out at over £350,000 in today's money & the 30's were a grim decade economically.

In his book The Making of Hibernian: The Romantic Years Alan Lugton tells us that Harry Swan and Bobby Templeton made a double swoop on Linfield on 4th December 1935 to sign two of their Irish internationalists Centre Half Soldier Jones 7k and £500 for inside right Willie Gowdy

Soldier Jones was an attacking centre half somewhat unusual in the era of the ‘ stopper’ but suffered indifferent health during his stay at Easter Road and never struck true form

Hibs were involved in a relegation battle at the time and often had to do without both players as they turned out for NI

One interesting early bottom of the table clash versus fellow bottom club Clyde away Hibs lost 4-7 on 28th December 1935 goalkeeper James Culley received a blow to the head and had to leave the field of play Soldier Jones took over in goal and lost four goals please also bear in mind we would be down to 10 men

Centre Half and Captain John Jack Soldier Jones played 55 games scoring 4 goals before being sold by Willie McCartney to Glentoran in August 1937 and replacing him with fellow Irish international Centre Half Willie Reid returning to Hibs for a second spell

Interesting info B, thanks. £7k seems a huge amount in 1935 mind you, especially for a centre half!
