That’s so sad hearing he has died. My first memory of him was the first goal he scored against England when west Germany were 2-0 down at Mexico World Cup and they went on to win 3-2 with muller scoring the winner. Think I jumped up and down to that winning goal.

My memory of him was the Mexico 1970 world cup playing against England they were 2.0 down and I think he played with a sling on and he scored a goal to get Germany back in the game

I’d have Lothar Matheus alongside Beckenbauer, but an iconic player and one of the few whose name is still used as a benchmark when describing a player making a pass, 60 years later.

LM was good but i'd agree with the sentiment Beckenbauer was Germanys best ever player. I think thats certainly the thought in Germany.

A two time world cup winner as player and manager, a European championship, a hat trick of European Cups, countless league titles in several countries, and twice ballon d'or winner.

Can't really ask for much more. What a player and what a career.

Only 3 men have won the World Cup as player and coach. That's 2 of them, Zagalo and Beckenbauer, passed away this year.

Didier Deschamps..... sleep well tonight :cb

Suddenly we all wanted to be sweeper back in the day, strolling around imperiously, mopping things up and occasionally striding forward to have a shot.

It sometimes ended in disaster as you got your pocket picked by an alert forward and you were left floundering after them as they bore in on goal.

Hibs were in such a situation more than once. Naturally, I can't mention any names.

Speak for yourself, I myself was magnificent in the sweeper role and just can't fathom why every club in the country disagreed.
