Looking for some advice or even a point in the right direction.
My Mum recently ended a long term relationship with a guy she had lived with for over 30 years. Fairly soon after she was hospitalised partly because off all the stress she had been under. She is out now in her own council flat getting a lot of support.
Unfortunately her ex has got in touch with her saying he is in a lot of debt and will need to sell the flat she shared with him and she needs to collect her belongings that are still there. Her name was never on the mortgage (not sure why) but she certainly paid her share of the bills.
Who would be the best person for her to contact over this to get advice?

On the face of it, there's not much she can do if her name's not on the mortgage, unfortunately.
Citizen's Advice might be able to confirm or contradict.

Common law marital law is very complex, best to either contact a solicitor or Citizen’s advice

A lot of solicitors will offer a free initial consultation, there will be those who specialise in common law cases so maybe worth making a few calls.

Marriage by cohabitation and repute is broadly the Scottish equivalent - but is rarely relied upon (and indeed was by and large abolished for any relationships starting after 2006 by an Act of that year) - best to consult a specialist family lawyer on this.
