2nd choice. They were after Ian Beale but he is busy during pantomime season.

Insane move.

Their caretaker wasn't doing too badly either.

Has any club made close to the number of consistently bad decisions Sunderland have in recent years?

Replacing Mowbray with Beale is like swapping a £50 note for a bag of chocolate coins.

Really strange decision. Heavily linked with Will Still at Reims but sounded like the compensation fee was too high.

They’ve also kept the same backroom team - which is a move I struggle to understand after deciding to sack the manager who worked with them previously.

Beale’s record at QPR was almost identical to the once which has just got Mowbray the sack too.

TBF, having dug a very deep hole for themselves they'd been making better decisions of late but this definitely seems to be a step back in the other direction for them.

Over the past decade I don't think any clubs will have been worse.

Management merry go round. It seems harder to get out of management than it is to get into it in the first place. By all accounts, Mowbray was really popular with the Sunderland support. He’ll land on his feet I think and hope but I can see Beale having a tough time there.

Yep genuinely baffling decision on every level. You are obviously in the xmas spirit with your chocolate coins reference. :greengrin

I’m not certain Beale won’t turn out to be a decent enough appointment for them.

It was getting rid of Mowbray that appeared a little strange.

Newcastle fans will be relishing getting to meet them in the cup and hoping they play a strong team and really give them a seeing to.

As an original toon fan before the hibees won my heart on moving up here, I'm delighted with this. Imo the guys got a very inflated ego and can see him having problems there. The makems are a fickle bunch, not sure how well they'll take to a smug cockney twat. They were made for each other 🤣

I mean, he's inheriting a club in decent shape with a few good players and who are probably on course to achieve what they wanted to / needed to.

Most managers end up being written off as being crap for taking on shambolic situations and not turning them around quickly enough or for not matching unrealistic expectations.

There are much, much worse situations for a manager to be taking over Sunderland than this one and so for that reason Beale might stand a decent chance.

If they start plummeting from here then it's probably on him.

Wouldn't be surprised if they went for Shankland in the January window.

A 3-0 defeat and chants of 'one Tony Mowbray' ringing round the ground yesterday.

He's not going to last long.
