Surprised there’s no thread on this. Grangemouth is set to cease operations as an oil refining facility by 2025, with the loss of around 400 jobs, as it converts to an import facility.
A devastating blow for the local economy.

Air quality will improve 😁 lived there for 4 years in the early 1980s, horrible chemical smell all the time.

How does this fit into the new oil extraction licences the government want to issue each year?
A key element of the positive reasoning for more oil extraction was that we'd have energy security (not if we have to ship it abroad 1st) and also its 'greener' oil as its not having to be imported.

Can the site be converted for bio fuel, hydrogen production, carbon capture etc?
We really can't see a repeat of what happened to the old mining communities when the pits were closed. Many of those towns and villages have never really recovered.

Will hit the local area pretty hard IF it happens, I stay in the old part of grangemouth and while it will be great to see something different to flames at night and the half yearly warning siren you have to feel for the people that it will impact, its not the first place that you would pick to live but it's actually a decent wee town

Shipping it abroad will happen. Every drop heading to Englands refining sites. Then back up the road in tankers to fill our cars. All at a premium mind just like the electricity.

Does this mean Falkirk can finally build their fourth stand?

Yip I'm in the Auld toon as the locals call it,I'm in clyde street now but stayed in paris street so right next to grangeburn road, my wife comes from the area which is why we are here, it's a good bit for us as we are right next to the canal so can get along to the kelpies and stuff with the kids and dog. Easy for getting to and from edinburgh for work as well with the M9 being right there

No, that's to do with proximity to the ICI plant. (no longer ICI but I don't know the name)

This is a massive hit to the Scottish economy.
It is. But not as massive as the BBC and Scottish Labour would have you think. Both reported that the refinery is worth 4% of Scotland's GDP.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-67497023 Note that the inaccuracy remains in the article even now.
They later published a grudging correction, blaming Ineos' website rather than their own journalistic inadequacy.

Yesterday we quoted a claim made on the Petroineos website (which we attributed to Petroineos as a claim rather than reporting as a fact) that the Grangemouth refinery is responsible for 4% of Scotland’s GDP. The respected Fraser of Allander Institute says that’s not accurate.

BBC are generally hopeless. Still 0.3% of gdp is still a massive blow. Ratcliffe will be too busy giving hopeless Man U players 300k a week to care about staff at his plants losing their wage

Absolutely. Plus the complete loss of any refinery capacity in the country. Dreadful news.

I just recently read that Ratcliffe put millions into getting brexit, he surely owes the country. He is also making his electric car in Austria to save brexit expenses and lives in Monaco, a patriot

Sad times but the numbers are a drop in the ocean compared to the number of financial services jobs Edinburgh has lost to India in the last few years. It’s been mostly IT but now they’re targeting all the customer service jobs too and Scottish Enterprise don’t seem to care.
