22 November 2023 - exactly sixty years since the assassination of President Kennedy. One of the most infamous events of the twentieth century, it happened a time of rapid change and was one of the first events covered by what we now refer to as rolling news. Television meant that millions of Americans could watch events unfold in real time, from programming being interrupted with a newsflash of shots fired, through to continuous coverage for days to come. A very interesting phenomena.
Here is a You Tube gem: CBS tv network on that day. The lunchtime soap opera As The World Turns is interrupted with a newsflash. Kennedy was shot at 12:30 pm Dallas time (1:30 pm eastern) and died in Parkland hospital, Dallas , around thirty minutes later. The show returns before being taken off air, when it cuts to the great Walter Kronkite. The rest is history….
